Benedict Cumberbatch reads one of Alexei Navalny's final letters

Ойын-сауық

Last month Vladimir Putin’s most prominent critic, Alexei Navalny, paid the ultimate price for his beliefs, dying in a West Siberian prison after years of relentless campaigning against corruption and a near-fatal poisoning. By the time of his death, Navalny had been imprisoned for more than two years, during which time he wrote to his supporters and the wider world through letters shared on his social media accounts. This is one of the last messages he wrote.
Benedict Cumberbatch joined us to read it at Letters Live at the Royal Albert Hall on 6th March 2024.

It's the same in the West for those, who know and accept that the West cannot afford these wars. They can't print anymore money so the tax payer is funding. The prime suspect, the US with a debt creeping up to $35 trillion dollars, when it was only last month Putin mentioned it was $33 trillion. I don't think people realize, what kind of hell they are inviting in their lives by not paying attention to the real threat that's coming.

I've watched a lot of footage of mourners lining up to pay their respects to Mr. Navalny in the last week. For me one of the most touching moments was when a small crowd was chanting, not loudly but distinctly, "Ukrainians are good people." Such a simple sentiment but also such an act of courage to show that the spirit of humanity is still alive in Russia-that over a century of having their noblest ideals betrayed by cynical politicians has not extinguished that flame. Here's to a Russia that finds strength in friendship with its neighbors instead of destroying them, and where honorable politicians like Mr. Navalny flourish.

The anti-Putin sentiment is strong in educated urban circles. Of which there aren't that many. Russia is a huge country with not a lot of big cities, and people have enough real problems in their life to not care too much about some political prisoner's death. “Rights are not given, rights are taken.” If you seriously consider elections what the scoundrels who organize so-called “elections” serve you on the plate where they cannot lose, where they draw their own numbers, where they use coercion to vote, where they themselves selected all the options for you and all those “extra” candidates were removed, imprisoned and expelled, and at the same time the other governments consider them legitimate, negotiable and “partners”... then be prepared to be disappointed by your so-called “right.” Because for them, the Right is the right of violence, the right of terror, and they are using this right. And anyone who does not exercise this right must always remain on their knees with their hands behind their head.

There will be no victory of the people. The people are being destroyed, our culture, our history and our traditions, even our minds through brainwashing and constant lies in our media. Not only do they want to destroy us, not only do they want their tyranny here, they want to make an everlasting global tyranny for everyone, where you are in a prison of the mind from the time you are born, so that you can never even dream of freedom. That's the system that is coming out from our dear western countries, that's who our regime is, and Russia is just another obstacle in the path of our dreams of world domination to implement this system. This is the sad reality here in western countries. We have no freedoms or democracy, and the regime that has hijacked our countries wage constant wars, destroy countries, kill millions, bomb everywhere, illegal and even unknown wars around the world, outside of international and even national laws. In the west you're barely even free to say a man is a man anymore or that a woman is a woman, just if you want clarity on how bad things are getting. Nobody here have any representation in government, except foreigners and some "special" minorities. That's all they care about, all they talk about.

High school students are going to memorize this letter in their history courses along with the Gettysburg Address, "I have a dream," and "I Will Fight no More Forever." What a powerful, powerful letter. Could you do this for your country? Could I? We need a new word to describe the kind of brave that Navalny was!
