I've just remembered why I had a big poster of Gillian Anderson on my wall through most of the 90s.

It's been a long time since I've seen Gilian Anderson and she's still gorgeous.

Her reading of this letter is a beautiful coupling.

I loved Nin’s diaries which were wonderful.

I just love this woman. What a lovely reading

I definitely need to check out Anais Nin's work after this. I got so swept up in her prose and in Gillian Anderson's voice that the words just sort of crashed over me like waves. And the "Collector" seems like he was a creep tbh.

The one of Gillian's I enjoyed most was the letter she wrote to her younger self. Moving and v. Funny.

This is a woman…who loved the horizontal folk dance… Nin was prolific writing about erotica..she wrote books, journals, essays and short stories…she had numerous literary lovers…including Lawrence Durrell (of the Durrell family)..she even elided to a brief incestuos affair with her estranged father in one of her books….she was also a bigamist…(twice the fun probably)….but Henry Miller was her real love….she received an International Literary Prize and an Honorary Doctorate…she also sort inspiration from several authors one was DH Lawrence..she did live a bohemian lifestyle…and followed the surrealist movement..she sure was active and passionate..and quite uninhibited.

I love Her so much ❤️

My wife and I are on cusp of 80 we are passionately affectionate and I adore her

Not many in these comments know or appreciate poetry or Anais Nin. That's okay. They may not even know that sex is about a lot more than the ole in and out. You don't need to be posh or sophisticated to have sex or write about it.

Words ≠ sex. If anything, the more is said, the less is had. Poets don't accept this, and that's why their breed is destined to pandahood with delusions of jungle fever.

Hard to overhear the hatemail in this one. Although it being Anais Nin and Gillian Anderson it is apparently a whole other product category ; sophisticated hate. Not only allowed but sanctioned and highly desirable. I basically tend to agree about the way she thinks about sexuality, but it is not, and never was, easy. For some people even impossible. Of course a person is the poorer the more they are shriveled up. Still the hate statement and the obvious glee with which it is brought, does not really go well with me. Much lauded ambiguity, I guess. 0:19

Human sexuality is an unromantic tragedy. She turned it upside down, bit the hand that fed her, and we're none the wiser for it. Not sophisticated at all, but trashy and puerile. An opiate for the sexless masses.

It's an impression of the writer.

I love her. LOVE HER...but the accent is always so annoying 😂 It doesn't a better actress make!

I can't be the only one sick of hearing her ramble on about sex, can I?

"Intellectual, imaginative, romantic, emotional-" Over four minutes of cryptic hailing can be condensed down to a woman demanding cunnilingus.

Can we please get over having people we neither know nor care about trying hard to tell us how to think? Get back to the humour already. Laughs are helpful. Hearing self important simpletons drone on as f they're important is pointless at best. Funny or die.

Obviously written by someone whose life is so monotonous that only an orgasm, they think, can change their mood or mind. Until they're back to the monotony, and nothing has changed. It's a good thing this "poetry" is dying because the times are manifestly prosaic. And sex ain't what it used to be. Wishful thinking makes the world go round, but this is vanilla writing for squares.

Sex and poetry are only limited by one’s imagination…half the fun of sex is the discovery..the other half is actually partaking..poetry is imagination and creativity..like all things you have to have an open mind and be willing to try…because sex nowadays is more than what it used to be.

In, say, a man's relationship with his love object, there is a period in which he loves her more than he understands her, followed by a period in which he understands her more than he loves her: idealizing, then devaluing how she makes him feel about himself, whether, at any point, he loves her any less. The relationship may yet continue long after both parties have crossed that line, but the truth is that, after the second period, he does love her less. A man will come to know three women: the one he idealizes, the one she is underneath her "fakeup", and the one who, in the fullness of time, she will become. It's possible that, as he gets to know her more intimately, as he understands her more deeply, he'll love her more than he did before, but that will only be true if he was incredibly pessimistic about who she was when he first met her. Love is like that: an active "imaginationship". We like what we lack and we lack what we like. Newness generates a dopaminergic haze that magnifies her qualities and downplays his flaws. No matter how much you have, no matter how many people adore you, no matter how often you may exhaust your biological urges on a daily basis - people want what they can't have and want it without understanding the long-term consequences, and, above all, want you to be someone you're not. They want you to be the person they need you to be and that's not who you are. Whether it's with the most fleeting of flirtations or the most deadly serious romance over many years, sex is inexorably, and inevitably, tragic. There are too many people who pretend to love, who pretend to know what love is, and too many people desperate for anything that simulates love and, somehow - they keep finding each other. You aren't misinformed. You are, simply, myth-informed. Poetry be damned.
