Benchmade Phaeton - Hammer's new EDC knife

Спорт

Hammer liked my Benchmade Infidel knife but wanted something smaller and with a single-edge blade. Meet the Phaeton, an OTF knife just as nice as the Infidel but smaller, lighter, single-edged and a little less expensive.

I recommend this knife over the Ultratech. I have this knife and a Microtech UTX-85. But I recommend Microtech Ultratechs also because they are just as good. There's just small differences in detail.

What you mention as a safety feature is actually just the mechanics of the action, they use momentum to extend or retract the blade with the help of a couple springs and some very handy locking pawls inside the mechanism to lock it in or out. Although if you put it up to your skin and send it out (I tried it) it will give you a little penetration (but just the tip🤣) just not like the movies portray them where you can put it up to someone's side and stab them by pressing the button. See the videos on how they work where they take them apart and you'll understand. So my point is that it would be virtually impossible for one of these type OTF knives (as opposed to some other cheaper versions that are stored closed with tension on the spring) to fire while in your pocket since there is no tension on the springs when closed (or open for that matter), when you slide the button you are actually pre-loading the springs which fling the blade in or out along a track inside the handle so it would be highly unlikely that you could possibly snag the button/slider on your pocket or hit it with enough force to load the springs. They are probably the safest knife design available, certainly much safer than a button lock (automatic) or a spring assist folding blade. I'd even go so far as to say i would consider it to be child-proof since it takes a little bit of strength in your fingers to slide the button in or out, unless you have a freakishly strong child. Also, like you mentioned in most states you would need a Concealed Carry permit to carry it if switchblades are not illegal altogether. Go to www.akti.org/state-knife-laws/ to check the legality before you buy and you may want to join them to help get knife laws changed for the better.

Fortunately I live in a state that has "concealed "weapon" permits" and therefore am allowed to carry OTF knives legally. I actually own both benchmades and a tip from my experience: phaeton all the way. It's lighter, smoother, faster, smaller and really just better than the often plain cumbersome infadel. In the end though it's down to preference, those are just my 2 cents.

deerdance114 I live in a state where automatic knives are illegal. Fortunately if I drive north to New Hampshire I can get them easily. Only 1 hr 20 mins away. In NH, you can only buy them if you’re military, police, firefighters, EMT but if you’re from out of state you can buy them with the understanding that “I’m” responsible if I get caught in my state. Gamble I’m willing to take

But does it come in .45 caliber? :) Benchmade seems a great high quality brand, but those prices! Yes, I know you get what you pay for, but for $350 I'd expect it to feed me breakfast in bed! I mean seriously! I can get a Security 9 and 500 rounds for that. Still, you can't say both of those aren't nice knives. -

Frank Hellman That's nothing! I'm an avid knife collector and when you get into the midtech/custom world of knives $350 is nothing. A Stan Wilson folder pocket knife runs $6,000.00! My last folder was almost $500. These OTF knives although cool aren't practical. They have tons of blade play and do not function well for EDC tasks IMO. Try cutting a piece of rope with one and you'll begin to see. I've owned several and the only design that I would actually trust is Gavin Hawks Deadlock but it runs around $1,200-1,700 I believe. It's all the internal mechanism, and through the years the fairly simple internal mechanism has remained the same until the Deadlock

Mollybendium? Huh, new element for the periodic table, I guess? Oh, and that, "safety feature" which prevents it from penetrating your flesh? Email me and I'll send you a picture of the stitches in my palm which prove you misinformed. My carelessness + your ignorance = stitches! Be careful about speaking when you're out of your depth. ...it is a nice knife, though! Love mine, despite, or maybe because of, my wound!

Yes. It's doesn't take any force for a sharp blade to penetrate flesh. That the whole point of sharp tools.

Definitely not a “safety feature” though you’re right, just the nature of these knives means there’s no actual force when it’s coming out, the spring “shoots” the blade forward from a couple inches then it’s free flying like a projectile. Lots of people think it’s like a continuous spring that will shoot through a board or something, when they’re not that strong but strong enough to do the same damage as catching a thrown knife.
