OTF Comparisons Benchmade vs. Microtech (practical/self-defense?)

200 SUBSCRIBERS! Thank you! This is just a comparison of three OTF knives and my opinion about them. I have the Benchmade 4600DLC-1 Phaeton, 3400 Autocrat and the Microtech UTX-85 231-4. I also have the fixed infidel in the mix. I hope you enjoy this, please share it with someone that will appreciate it! Thanks again for subscribing.

I am a knife guy and have a decent collection. But after I was permanently injured on active duty, I found a new and deep appreciation for the one handed deployment on a OTF and use a Microtech as a reliable EDC. So I have to politely disagree with you on that point. OTF's ARE a practical one arm/handed go-to option due to an injury, disability, or if you need both hands for different jobs at the same time. But you do get what you pay for, and as of now I believe companies like Microtech, Benchmade, and others do set a high standard. Clones are more friendly with your wallet, but lack in quality. on a lighter note, they are fun on the fidget scale. Hope this was helpful!

3:10 - Blade shape and blade grinds are different. A drop point can be flat, hollow, convex, etc. ground. The shape does not determine the grind and vise versa. You were thinking of "full flat grinds"

Hi my friend. I know this is an older video, but you still make some good points in it. For ease of carrying without alarming others around us, folders or OTFs are a must. Fixed blade knives are more reliable since there are no moving parts to malfunction. However, they're just not practical to EDC because of the size. A quality OTF or side opening knife is probably the only choice most of us have. I have several very good quality knives that I carry daily depending on what I've got going on that day. When I'm more concerned with self protection, I carry a full size Benchmade Infidel dagger blade. Camping/hiking, a swiss arm knife. Hunting, a fixed blade field dress knife. EDC, a slip joint pocket knife. BTW, I've had a couple of Autocrats for 2-3 years now. I don't recall any malfunctions though I'm not a fidgeter like many auto owners are. I think the Autocrat is a fine auto OTF, though not really practical for anything other than self protection and I prefer the Infidel for that. One of the best EDC knifes available is the Benchmade Phaeton because of the size, flatness, and drop point blade.

I got a good one - in the OD green. No misfires in the past 2 weeks and a hundred or so deployments. If not for the military discount, I’d agree that it’s overpriced. Warranty is valuable and reassuring. Thanks for the video - good stuff!!

You get some serious bang for your buck when it comes to the Microtech. Between my Microtech and my Benchmades, Microtech comes ahead. That micro bevel works great, just strop it and let Microtech sharpen it. Plus, Anthony Marifone is a custom maker, he knows what he’s doing on production knives. Far more consistent on quality too.

On benchmade OTF knives, there is a screw that holds the blade to a small carrier that keeps it on track, and said screw tends to walk itself out after a while. I had to disassemble mine and threadlock that screw in, and the small vibration and blade play problems were fixed permanently. That may be why your benchmades have a slight noise when tapped

IT'S ALL ABOUT TWO BENJAMINS BABY! That's until you get to 300. :) I'm glad you got to have some family time Dad. Better health is a neverending daily battle, but you'll achieve your goals if you make them small and achievable. I lost over 80 pounds, then gained half back after my body said I can't do an hour+ of Tai-Bo, weights, and pilates six days a week. So, now I'm a bit heavier, walking for exercise, taking medication, and being as happy as I can with that. Don't get on yourself about it, stay positive, enjoy your family. I don't have any OTF knives as I can't carry them in MA, so I spend money on those I can. Very cool looking items though, and I appreciate the knive candy. But, the platform seems novelty to me, as a greenhorn. Thanks for sharing.

Very interesting, thx With these video I am more convinced then ever that I do 'not like' OTF (I was interested to have one, probably Microtech the UTX-85 (or maybe the Benchmade Mini-Infidel)) but ... no :/ I think I will go to spend more (the 300-450 dollars for the OTF) on a custom fixed blade or a custom slipjoint

I used to agree with you on the otf not being as useful as a fixed or even a folder, most often the hype coming from the rule of cool. But I have to say, they are a lot more useful in your daily life than either. The one hand operating is so useful I never knew and was very surprised. So I really think they are great for every day life. I forgot who said it, but the most useful knife is the one you have on you.

"Flat grind" refers to the large section below the SIDE of the blade and the bevel. Hollow ground is when that space is slight concave. Flat ground = flat, and yes, convex grind would mean that portion curves slightly outward! Katana are the epitome of convex "grind" though it's called, "apple seed" shape. Katana have no "bevel" per se, the outwardly curved side is smoothly polish-honed into the end which is why the edges are very strong. A Flat ground blade will have slightly more cross-section just above the bevel than a hollow ground, but hollow ground is easier to bring to a razor edge.

Micro Tech all the way. Micro Techs internal parts are actually very simple with a single spring. I think the "thud" sound on deployment is because it has a thicker slightly heavier blade. The micro grind is harder to sharpen but it is stronger and wont chip as easy. Ive seen torture test done with the Micro Tech and a guy used a sledge hammer to send it through a 2x4 like a nail, and it didn't even collapse. I just ordered my second Micro Tech, its the tanto point ultratech coming today I cant wait until I get home from work and open it up. Once you start buying "quality" knives its addicting as I cannot go back to Walmart specials. I also have a few Benchmades and they make a great folder but I feel that Micro Tech is on top of the game with their blade steels and craftsmanship. My other Micro Tech is a Socom Elite auto and my next one will be the LUDT non auto.

There is certainly a disappointment on the Autocrat. That being said, it could happen to anyone really. I had a Microtech Cypher which used to fail me every now and then. I bought a clone cypher afterwards, just to get a feel of how they compare. To much of my surprise, the clone has yet to fail on me! I guess my point is, Benchmade and Microtech are both great companies who try hard to make good autos. However, due to the complicated nature of OTFs and large production numbers, quality issues do happen on some occasions.

You can have a drop point blade with a flat grind dude.. Just like you can have a hollow grind in a drop point blade. The blade shape (drop point, tanto, dagger, etc) is completely separate to the type of grind (flat, hollow, chisel, etc.) used on the blade.

"Flat Grind," vs. hollow. The entire blade doesn't need to be ground to the spine to qualify as flat ground. The opposite would be a hollow or concave grind, no matter how much of the blade the primary bevel covers.

Although yes, there is some risk because it's mechanical, I think you need to examine your rationale behind your opinion of them not being there for you in a life-threatening situation. I mean you say you have seen the torture test/stress test (probably done by X-Ring). And you keep saying there's a lot of movement, but there's not. My Microtech has maybe 1mm of movement on the x and y axis at the tip. I was shocked at how solid it was actually when I first starting collecting them. Also, I've never had a failure to fire with my Microtechs. Do you realize that the Microtech is designed so the spring action is at rest until you go to activate the blade. And I get it, the fixed blade is ready all the time. But, are you going to carry the fixed blade to the office? Are you going to carry the fixed blade to a meeting? Are you going to carry the fixed blade as a UPS driver? It's ready to go, but the best knife if the one you have with you. And for me, unless you're a complete moron who bought a knife and hasn't practiced with it at all, and also, haven't mentally visualized yourself in an adverse situation and practiced to get your muscle memory where it needs to be. Lastly, thanks for saving me the $345 for the Autocrat... even at the discounted pricing. ;-) (P.S. lesson learned = buy Microtech... and I'm not a shill or have ever received anything from them either. But, there is a reason they're the benchmark.)
