Ben Shapiro Critiques the Conservative Party of Canada

The UBC Free Speech Club is honoured to host Ben Shapiro on Halloween night!
The UBC Free Speech Club is nonpartisan and committed to cultivating an open dialogue on campus, where arguments are made with wit and reason rather than rhetoric and personal attack. We cherish a diversity of opinions and seek to promote an open debate stage, where political correctness no longer holds sway.

Different cultures have different ideas of what constitutes a marriage. Some allow polygamy, concubinehood, etc. The government was always needed to set the bar on what marriage is and what regulatory and tax benefits a person can receive. Bens ideas are too delusional and idealistic. It’s the work around he requires to espouse his ideas without being completely censored. Trust me if the government adopted his views on what marriage is, there is no way he would still call for government neutrality

In terms of government being hands off on issues like cannabis and marriage, I'm in *100%* agreement; gov't is a poor regulator of both in Canada and the USA. On the subject of Trudeau, Ben's Sanders comparison is quite off base. Just as he judges Trump on his policy, rather than public rhetoric, he needs to do the same with Trudeau; he would then see that Trudeau is clearly a neo-Liberal with few socialist or more left leaning policies, in the Canadian political spectrum.

That's very true, and it's the same with the Liberal party. People think the Liberal party is a left wing party, but as a democratic socialist who did not and will not vote Liberal, that irritates me. If you judge from what is the American standard of left-wing, then the Liberals are definitely left. But in Canada, that is not true. The Liberals are centrist, and the NDP is the left wing party. Trudeau's policies about : -The pipelines (they have negative externalities on the environnement, economic theories indicate that you need regulations when you have negative externalities since your market isn't efficient) -The atrocious trade deal that is the TPP (it creates international juries named by corporations in which corporations can after sue the government, that's the opposite of law and order). Show that he's a neoliberal He's also a centrist and not a leftist since he continued to sell arms to Saudi Arabia and backtracked on his promise to have proportionnal representation. Real leftists and progressives despise that since it goes against the fundamental concept of democracy and basic human rights. So yeah i guess i know what i'm talking about, i study in economy and politics. And i'm Canadian.

Trudeau is as left as it gets. To claim he’s a centrist is beyond retarded.

Meaning... Trudeau a centrist? NO! Trudeau is a feminist, and a virtue signalling, spoiled child.

It was more a quip by Shapiro than a complex analysis. Trudeau is not the centrist you paint him as however. He does still remain in favor of low corporate taxes. He also, however, wants increased regulations, and routinely uses the Marxist oppressor vs oppressed language and legislates with that in mind when it comes to so-called human rights. Trudeau is in many ways a socialist. He is to the left of the 1960s NDP. He is certainly not a liberal centrist.
