I shedded half of my body weight and I feel like a whale every day. Everyone says I look so amazing and I can’t shake it. I make sure I eat healthy in both not eating too little and eating too much while making sure I exercise but not too much because I don’t want to fall into an unhealthy cycle because I’m so worried it’s not enough.

Not really... She is very straightforward... What do you even mean with "delicate"? E.g. she just asks "was it because you ate too much or was inactive"? And Ben says, actually, the underlying reason was poor mental health.

🤨🤨🤨 she thinks about what she asks before she asks him. Not the question but how the question is worded her tone is delicate and from her body language and presence you can tell that if she notices him get uncomfortable or unwilling to answer a question she will stop that line of conversation. Yes it's something that should happen in every relationship but it doesnt. And her behavior is something people should note as the way they should be treated and the way to treat others

I appreciate that he mentions walking and I’ve been watching some other weight loss content and I’ve learned that I need to stop listening to the weight loss gurus that tell me to do intensive work outs for three hours a day bc it makes me feel weak, essentially compared to how strong I once was, and makes me quit before I’ve truly started. What really stuck with me about this highlight, is Ben saying that even though he’s lost all this weight, he thinks he need to lose more; and that he still see himself a a fat person. Because I know exactly where he’s coming from. When I was my fittest in high school, I was at my smaller of like 155 but I had 150 as my goal weight; I hated looking in the mirror back then, because I thought I was so fat still. Unfortunately, to no ones fault but my own, I gained A LOT of weight after high school and I still remember thinking that way in highs cool. goes without saying that I hate my body even more now, then I did back then.

I was bullied for being overweight in middle school, which led to eating disorders such as bulimia and then to binge eating. The kids used to call me nicknames, referring to me as a ball. Looking back at the pictures of myself then, I cannot understand how I believed that I was fat. I was healthy, active and happy, and then I became unhealthy. I was starving myself all day. I limited myself to one meal a day in order to maintain a certain weight and to feel better about what I looked like. Eventually I started over eating to try and fill the emptiness I felt inside, which led to obesity. Now my struggle and aim is to work on healing myself emotionally, mentally and physically. This has helped me, hearing about someone else's journey in such a transparent manner. Thank you

So I was chatting with an Australian Olympic Swimmer sometime last year and she talked about "getting put out to pasture" as an athlete. She had a major injury and was put into the hospital with a very limited diet, so she got out of it ok. But her colleagues that stopped being professionals had a really hard time balancing their huge hunger (from doing all the exercise and sports) with their lessened amount of workouts. So a lot of them kind of ballooned after stopping competition.

As a retired dancer I’ve definitely struggled with this. The weight gain hasn’t been extreme but I was “heavier” to begin with even though I looked super skinny. I looked 140 but I weighed 165. I weigh a lot more now but it was gradual, going to college, hip injury, having a baby. I’m at 200 but I really don’t look it. But when I compare to old photos I definitely see I got slightly heavier. I’m a big time foodie too and it’s a constant battle with my body to tell it “hey, we’re not dancing full time now, we need to chill out with the hunger”

It is also important to note that some people (like me) can be as unhealthy as they want at an early age without gaining weight, but as soon as you reach adulthood (for me around the age of 24) the way your body handles your diet and activity level changes. I gained 5 or 6 kilos in around a year, which is a very rapid change for me, so I suddenly had to change the way I was living dramatically to stop becoming overweight.

Ben has convinced himself that losing 20 more lbs will make him healthier, and that’s sad. If a doctor hasn’t told him he needs to, he shouldn’t assume. I’m proud of Christine for questioning him on that point; cuz take it from a person who lost 100 lbs during cancer treatment. No doctor alive wanted my formerly obese butt to lose that weight! They stuck a feeding tube in my stomach to force me to get more calories after I dropped 20 in one week... then replaced that thing six months later when I was still dropping weight. The only people who congratulated me on the weight loss were people who think “skinny” equals “healthy.” And the reason I haven’t wasted away to nothing is because of the doctors and loved ones who shut those people up!

It's so weird isn't it? I've lost. . .oh probably 70 pounds or so and when I look in the mirror I still see myself at that heavier weight. I see pictures and things and I KNOW I'm not, but it's still always what I see. I can relate, Ben.

This was so interesting to watch. It's amazing to see Ben being so open and vulnerable about this, and Cristine being so thoughtful in her questions. I also really appreciate them making points (in this and other videos) about eg BMI being an unhelpful measure, mental health being a huge part of overall health, crash weight loss being unhealthy and unsustainable, aesthetics not being the primary reason they both lost weight, etc. All that said, just for anyone reading this who is heavier than Ben or Cristine - please know that that doesn't mean you're unhealthy or unattractive or that you have to be unhappy! Ben's body type changed, and he slowly changed it back by returning to a level of activity and eating which feels good to him. Your set point weight may be higher, your body type may be different, but that doesn't mean you're any less healthy or, you know, worthwhile as a person! Health promoting behaviours such as moderate exercise have well-proven links with overall longevity, even if they result in you losing no weight at all. Tl;dr Ben's story around weight is only his story. You can't tell someone's health just by looking at their weight. Every body is worthy of respect.

This story makes me sad because how much I relate to this. Currently dealing with being overweight, and this pandemic isn't helping things. Luckily I have supportive people around me that are helping me get healthy and stay healthy If you are struggling with weight issues, be it over- or underweight, I just want you to know that you matter, you are an amazing person, and you deserve to be healthy and happy, even if doesn't feel that way right now. And if you are on the road to recovery, I want you to know that you are strong, but don't feel like you have to do it alone. You got this 💜💜💜

Thanks for sharing your story, Ben. I’m a mid twenties human and I’ve gained a lot of weight this past year. I wasn’t thin to begin with, and now I’m much bigger. With my medication changes, bipolar diagnosis, and overall state of the world, I’ve let my physical health be put on the back burner. I never knew Ben was once bigger, and hearing your experience definitely makes me feel less alone. I respect Ben and Cristine so much. It’s really neat to know that someone that I respect has gone through the same things as me and can approach the topic in a really truthful, logical way. Thanks

I really appreciate you guys being real and sharing your stories with a realistic perspective. Your guy's honesty is very refreshing and I love how much you both support each other. I have been overweight my entire life and mostly due to mental health issues that fed into comfort eating. I have tried off and on several times to loose weight and I have only recently ended a job that caused tons of stress and sucked out all ability to care about anything. Hoping to find a new job soon that doesn't do that to me and allows me to be happy in it. Trying again and I think what I'm going to try is to have a mentality of "I am doing what I can in the moment and my ultimate goal is made up of moments. It's ok if in a moment I mess up and don't eat well because there will be more moments that I will eat well." When I can, I'm gonna get a treadmill so I can walk in the comfort of my home at any hour and just be judgment free. I hate exercising in public as I have an extremely heightened sense of fear of being judged by other people when exercising.

Ben's sock game 👌 How Ben spoke about his mental state during his early days of undergrad was maybe the most eloquent description of my own undergrad experience. I felt really alone when I was younger in feeling like I wasn't "adjusting" well to the transition between high school and university (which obviously isn't true, so many struggle with this). I gained a lot of weight in middle school due to depression and never really lost it/grew out of it until high school. Even now as I start college I’m still a bit heavy, but my relationship with food has improved drastically. I did crash diets and worked out during high school, and I had a lot of disordered eating where I would obsess over the calories and carbs I ate. Now, I just eat and when I’m full I stop! It sounds simple but it’s so easy for me to overeat. I feel a lot better and I get to eat what I want. Seeing/hearing Ben’s story and understanding how he feels when he says he could stand to lose a few more pounds makes me feel like I’m not alone in this journey. Thank you for opening up!

When I was in high school, I ate food, especially chocolate, to make me feel better too, and at one point I just stopped eating sweets altoghether and limiting my food intake to one plate per meal, which helped a lot and mad eme lose weight thankfully. When I talk to my friends about bodyimage and stuff, sometimes they tell me I'm not fat, but I do still think of myself that way, and especially now when walking and physical activity is hard to maintain... The start of it was basically the fear of becoming as overweight as the rest of my family. All of my close family are overweight, especially my father. Me and my mum speculate that he started being unsatisfied with his life bc of his job, so he ate his frustrations away. Also, she thinks that he never learned how to pace himself and dose his food intake because in his childhood his mother might have made more accurate protions, it's always all or nothing with him. In general, I think the food we made at home wasn't really unhealthy, when you eat 3 plates of it, anything with substance will make you put on weight. When I started making less food though it was already too late and he was used to eating a lot and would find something else to eat. my brother is a little bit of the same, although he is aware that his eating habits are unhealthy, but still isn't really willing to compromise... and my mother recently got diagnosed with diabetes, most likely inherited, although she has problems regarding her weight too, so that is also a scare-point of putting on more weight.
