It's because mathematics are perceived as unattainable. As if they came from a type of intelligence "that most people 'can't' have". Instead of as a potential passion and as skills that get developed. Hardly anyone has natural skills at anything without having tried. Without realising they can be good at the basics and beyond, while curious and thrilled about learning and imagining more. People feel blocked because they think they aren't the "type of person" to understand a topic. But Matt is right of course. Everyone can understand and derive joy from maths and from sciences, as well as from arts, social sciences, crafts, and other stuff. It's just a matter of trusting oneself and of focusing on the things we already like as we develop more interests. I'm not just saying it. We need to question the things given to as "rules" or as "nature" that are just fears someone had and got transmitted and preserved as if they were holy. There's already far too many limits in social inequality and personal lives as to put more garbage over disposable nonsense. We can at least enjoy ourselves in whatever "useless" or prosocial thing we want if we have the time and energy, until this train wreck that is humanity ends. Sorry I went a little dark, lol.

I’m learning math again I went back to college. But I can fully agree with your statement something that should have been so easy to learn when I was younger was taught to me repeatedly without truly understanding the concept. Now that I am older I kind of realize it makes a world of difference. If some body that just happens to know math is trying to teach. Or if a teacher is actually helping you learn math efficiently.

I never had good experiences with math except for my 7th and 8th grade years of middle school. My teacher actually took the time to explain what we were learning and if I was ever confused then she would break it down even more to help me understand. My Math 101 professor also did pretty well but I skipped that class too much to know anymore about her teaching 😅

As a future high school math teacher, I can confidently say that people's feelings about math are directly correlated with their teachers' attitudes about it when they were taught. Even small murmurs like my elementary teacher would just say "math isn't my favorite subject," or "you guys won't actually use this but we have learn it for the test" greatly play into students' perceptions of the subject. And by the time students get to high school, if they have ill feelings about math, they're pretty much solidified because it only gets more complex. And teachers have it hard because, personally, I want my students to love math the way I do; I want them to realize how useful it is and beautiful that it shows up in nature and art in inexplicable ways. But how do I do that when I only have 90 minutes a day for 16 weeks, and I have to "teach to the test" to make sure they do well on the state exams at the end of the semester which reflect on them and their school and their teachers? Both teaching and loving math can be incredibly isolating and discouraging. It's a vicious cycle, and a hard one to break.

@@ann07ps49 Get back to maths. It's worth it. You could make a game out of it, not competitive necessarily but something you can think of and practice everywhere you go, or around the house. Revise your books and start with things you're comfortable with. Some youtube classes can help, or whatever format you like most. You successes will encourage you and before you know it, you'll be extremely proficient and thrilled about knowing and imagining more, and more. I always loved maths and physics but my parents took me out of school at 14 (abusive parents, wanted to break my support network because I was finally not taking their abuse), and then I got my high school degree through individual study while my mum was starting to date a physics professor from a local University that loves teaching who explained limits and derivatives to me in an extremely comprehensive way one evening. It's a beautiful subject. I explained it just as he did to some kids my age (at the time) that had to pass a test, and they finally felt adequate enough, because that guy's passion gets transmitted. It's really about the teacher. I've been tutoring kids and adults on and off ever since and it's lovely helping others see that they weren't bad at such things after all. Though I agree with the OP, it can be very heartbreaking too. I'm sorry your teachers were abusive. You are full of capacities and talents. Most importantly you are worthy and awesome. Good luck at everything.

Half of the reason I hated maths was teachers not catering to students needs. I'm neurodivergent, and I always had an incredibly hard time with maths. I can be taught and understand it one day, but might need to be retaught the same formula or method the next. I try my best to keep notes as much as possible though. No teacher took the effort to try and help me as much as I needed because they wanted to focus on the smart kids. Which was even more frustrating, because my friends were the smart kids. They'd try to help me with my work, and because they weren't teachers would have a hard time, as well it was cutting into their work time and I didn't want to bother them. I'd spend half the class with my hand raised while the teacher went around and helped other kids. Please, never do that. Please keep an eye on the kids who might not be getting it as quickly as the others. As well, the education system is set up incredibly poorly, like you said, everything is test driven, not practically driven.

YES. I never liked math much, but when I got to high school I really had a bunch of teachers that weren't so great. I remember my Math 30 (g12) teacher well. He was athletic and enjoyed coaching sports. A classmate asked him why he decided to become a math teacher and this is how he answered, "Well, my dad is a math teacher and my brother is also a math teacher... I wasn't sure what I had wanted to do, but math seemed okay. So, I decided to teach math." And you know? His lack of passion really showed. He had pre-written notes he would just regurgitate and throw up on the whiteboard every class. I really wondered why he didn't choose to be a PE teacher b/c that really seemed to suit him better.

I'm a data scientist with a Math degree so this podcast was amazingly relatable. It's so rare for me to see this sort of thing in "pop culture" content . Edit: Regarding that question about women in Mathematics. In my degree it was a 50/50 split on the genders and from what I know every year there's more and more women. Same thing in my Physics degree. Maybe it's more common in my country but in the STEM fields (except maybe engineering) the gender distribution is more and more equal. If you are a girl looking into going to STEM fields don't be scared, it's getting better every year.

I am a Biochemical engineer with a minor in food science, i just wanted to aknowledge the fact that you all shed light of collage/university studies, expiriences and job oportunities, even of it is for such a small segment, not only in this video but in all of simply's content! It fills me with joy that you all give such a diverse perspective maybe helping deepen the comprehention to those that are curious. Love the podcast!Love for what you stand for!🥰🙋🏻‍♀️

I am an 8th grade math teacher, and I HATE when parents say their child is bad at math because they were bad at math as if there is a math gene that determines whether or not you're going to be good specifically 8th grade math 🤯

As someone studying art at university and previously coming from a string of education that always prioritised STEM subjects over the arts its really cool to see a form of maths be called an art
