He was a young man looking for an exciting rendezvous on the dating app, Grindr. But within minutes of meeting his love match, he knew something was horribly wrong. What followed was a terrifying ordeal of beatings, torment, and robbery from which he escaped alive but with deep psychological scars. What’s more, he’s not the only victim: In a worrying trend, opportunistic criminals are using online dating apps to “catfish”, blackmail and rob people whose only desire is to find love or a fleeting romance. Many of those who’ve fallen victim to these crimes say they’ve received little support from the police, and the app developers are refusing responsibility. In a special two-part report, Carte Blanche investigates.

I feel so sorry for these guys bravely doing what they need to do to survive.
I dont know how many times I've missed these people and almost hit them on the road. Challenge is they want to be respected but don't fully follow the rules of the road, they choose when to follow them and when too.

Agreed. Some riders are pretty arrogant on their position to road rules and I fear for my life when I ride next to them
This entire video comes back to the lawlessness of taxis in this country. There are literally dozens of KZread creators with video evidence of taxi crimes. But Clown Minister of Police is as useless as an ice cream toaster. USELESS!!! Well done ANC, Well done!!!!!!

They deserve a tip every time
Let's be really honest though, the bike delivery guys also ride quite recklessly. Skipping Traffic lights, not stopping at Stop streets. They are delivering a key service but they aren't exactly safe on the road. Adding to this, I've seen some guys on bikes that are not safe or even roadworthy and at times a guy on a bike wearing a bicycle helmet, the companies sending their delivery teams out should also be held accountable for making sure the guys operate with safety gear that will actually protect them.
Thanks for this piece. Very enlightening for me. I will be more conscious going forward.

That was really funny 😂
There are no red tapes south Africans don't apply, they call you velaphi when you are a driver, I used to do deliveries(2020-2021) after Covid19 retrenchment also at the time I was finishing off my degree, and its easy to join for everyone they only need a learners/license ,ID copy and criminal check. And you make about R1.5k-R3k a week. Takealot is always looking for drivers.
Besides all the driving complaints, which are valid, it is an eye opener to consider and keep in mind what these drivers have to go thru to get our warm food & goods on time to us. And we should also show gratefullness. I think loadshedding has affected many people's perception negatively of what others have to go thru to survive. Let us not misdirect our frustrations and anger.
Unfortunately these delivery drivers rarely follow road rules. They jump stop streets and traffic lights ...speed.. and don't seem to care. Have had many near misses recently.
In Capetown they don’t care about traffic rules and fly between cars , knock off your mirrors
Why are the vast majority of drivers in SA foreigners? Estimates are between 70 and 95% are foreign nationals. Are the local citizens that need jobs (11 million of them) not willing to become drivers?

I wish all of them only the best. I am thankful for guys like them. I was just stranded without a car due to an accident. Order some stuff from Checkers, it was deliver by one of their friendly bike drivers. I would rather order and have it delivered from Checkers than having to deal with the unfriendly cashiers in Checkers.
Not all foreigners are criminals, most are just hardworking honest people. Imagine ordering food and a foreigner honestly bringing it to you, thats love for their jobs.
Not just them, even the drivers using thier cars are not safe
The description of this video is incorrect - it's a copy-and-paste of another insert (which I also watched) about dating apps. The detail, is where they say, it is in.
i feel very sorry for these guys
Ja, but also comment on how they drive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If only they respected the rules of the road. The amount of times I have see them driving on the wrong side of the road, jumping red lights, driving on sidewalks and over predestrian bridges or through pedestrian tunnels. I have sent videos to the companies they work for and no-one responded

These delivery riders are reckless on the road. I question if some are in possession of a driver's/riders license. I understand that this is making a living, but the recklessness is scary and worrying.

What's more worrying is the fact that most of them are foreigners. Is there a visa for being a motorbike driver anywhere else in the world, except SA?

This is such a deep ending to the segment for me. I stopped doing Uber because of the danger involved. This man has to judge his career on which job is less life threatening. That is so messed up.

Tip your drivers well
With the Fees these apps charge extra over and above , it's their responsibility to pay the drivers . By the time you ordering an item you would've paid double of what it's worth if you gone to the shop yourself. It's clear South Africa is not safer then other countries.
Lifes is tough people 💔🥺
South Africa can't have nothing nice
What the government should do is make bike licenses free to South African citizens as part of a social development scheme. If the industry plans to grow that much, then our own South African people should be equipped with the resources to work. The foreigners came from so far to make a life, our own people should be ashamed of themselves, it's not difficult to ride a bike. Then our guys can drive instead of robbing innocent people.

These bikers are partners to the delivery companies and are self employed. The riders are flexible to work whenever they feel like working and this business requires a lot self discipline. You can't go and get a fake sick note because no work no pay.

The government can maybe give them bikes on loan and they repay monthly. The mentality of expecting free stuff should stop, nobody is owed a free bike just because they are South Africans. These refugees came with little to nothing and somehow managed to either rent bikes or get them on loan. Those robbing people on the street, smoking hard stuff and taking drugs are doing it by choice, not because of lack of resources.

I started renting out bikes in 2018 and quickly learned not to trust or rent to SA people. At the time they undermined the pay compared to Uber even friends and family thought I was mental. And worst part of all they had excuses when they have to pay the weekly rent which started at R1200 and has now dropped to R650 a week due to supply of bikes. For foreign guys I would announce at 8am I hv a bike to rent 1pm 10 guys be chasing me for the bike by next week mon/ tues I have my pay. The industry shot off during covid my best driver operating in Bram even bought a car, SA guys hv also started joining. I hv since parked my bike due to theft nd bad drivers.
