Rogue responders | Carte Blanche | M-Net
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟭 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯.
It’s a growing phenomenon in Gauteng: volunteer paramedics assisting people involved in accidents or other life-threatening situations. Forced to act as a necessary response to scarce emergency services in their communities, ordinary citizens are stepping in to fill the gap. In Brakpan, members of the community underwent self-funded training, and some are now fully qualified first aiders doing what they can to assist until more capable personnel arrive on the scene. Others, though, operate illegally by overstepping the mark and, in some instances, patients have died in their care. One woman has become so brazen that she’s developed a reputation as a vigilante paramedic, endangering the lives of those in desperate need of emergency care.

Please make a story of tow truck companies stealing cars from accident scenes or asking for big money as storage fees after towing half dying people's vehicles away.

I agree... Get the qualification and THEN help the respective patients... That 15 year old will need to start seeing someone as PTSD is a very real issue!

Very true. My thoughts exactly. It could manifest in some paradoxical way later on in his life. The adrenalin rush can only suppress negative images up to a point, then a mature mind is required.
Was wondering what the catch was. Social media

As an ex-Law Enforcement Officer I completely agree with the experts, only registered Emergency Vehicles are allowed to display Red, Blue and other colored flashing lights and sirens, these "first responders" are indeed breaking more than one law and should be prosecuted. They endanger other road users lives with their reckless driven, also note that "Armed Response" and private Security vehicles are NOT Emergency Vehicles and Have to obey the Traffic Laws like any other Citizen.
@StanfromIBF

Me too. What are your thoughts on Fire Departments now also sporting blue lights? The Road Traffic Act specifically governs what they MAY use, but if they're setting an example - official services - why should others bother to comply, right?

If you want to be a first responder go for the proper qualification and go work in that industry it will help way more in so much ways than self proclaimed professionals

If the passion is already there, why not close the loop with training, at least with Basic Ambulance assistant to start with. I'll even help/guide/mentor/sponsor such a dedicated person. I started as a volunteer and, with help of many selfless EMS personnel, I made all the way to Advanced Life Support Paramedic. We fully endorse regulations and proper accreditation, but let us not get draconian and throw the baby out with the bath water.
This country has too many people doing jobs that they are not qualified for. And we still have BEE . Really if we all work together life hopefully will be a lot better for everyone .
They are keen and needed out there. Train them, get them qualified, and let them do what they like and enjoy. Obviously lay the rules and the law out and clear to them about filming at the accident scenes, and the 15-year-old. But to me channel their positive energy towards the right direction.

First responders can and do have their value, provided they are adequately trained via a set standard like here in the Cape, work with and via EMS channels feeding the correct info to control rooms for required resources etc. There are a lot of concerns in this particular situation with 9 different groups, fighting over patients and filming of patients and and and. First Aid should be taught at school to every child, my daughter was 13 when she saved her hockey coach, she witnessed him collapse and ran over pushed everyone out of the way and started cpr and brought him back before ems arrived. So the age issue is not an issue. EMS is not for everyone, its a calling

A basic ambulance assistant is a level 5 and is the first qualification to register with the hpcsa and that is a supervised qualification , first aid certificate expire after 3 years where you must do a refresher you are not allowed to treat a pt with even oxygen, a BAA can't even declare a pt dead how can a first aider ,they are not first responders, they are first aider
@GarthvanZyl-Medicare-EMR
Жыл бұрын
You can no longer do refreshers, it has changed, have to do the course over. Then a BAA can declare a pt dead, they just cant fill out the declaration. Think about it, the head is here and the body is there...pt is dead clearly, as a BAA you can choose to inititate a resus or not based on whether there are any signs of life, but if arriving on scene and cpr has been initiated they have to continue according to the protocol.

the child larping as a medic takes the cake. not surprised about the adults doing it since in sa everything is about the money, but that takes it to a whole new level. this of course begs the question... why does sa need, tolerate and encourage private everything? there is police atop the police, paramilitary security companies atop the army.. medical atop the actual medical facilities... only country in the world that goes that far. perhaps because at some point everybody in government benefits from that financially. and here another episode about the small people squabbling over peanuts that the government could shut down overnight with a few legislative changes.

If you watch it again and listen to what Stan said, someone being there to stop the bleed or to initiate cpr could very much save a life. The basics saves lives every day. However responders providing invasive therapy is questionable, if they were running around claiming to be medics they could be charged criminally under the health act, but nowhere did I hear any of them make that claim though. First aiders require consent, whether expressed or implied, patient has right to refuse treatment. The flipside of the coin is that if the first aider is trained and proficient in the skill of putting up iv's and has the patients permission to do so, there is nothing one can do as they have the patients permission
That’s what you get in Brakpan…
