6/29/23 update!
I can't believe this little video is still going and GOING! Guys, thanks for watching - it means a lot. I've 500+ videos but this was one of the first and I didn't even originally make it for KZread. I know it looks like it was made in 1984 instead of 2012, believe me. But the content is still very cool.
Please join me on Saturdays at 5pm ET for my free KZread Guitar Q+A livestream. Just text your questions about learning the guitar and I'll answer as many as I can in about 2 hours. If you can't make it on Saturdays, the livestreams are available to watch afterwards and soon I'll be making them into podcasts as well. I look forward to your questions!
And if you're serious about getting better at the guitar, check out my website www.song-bike.com. Lots of great content and PDFs - stuff NOT AVAILABLE on KZread.
I do online lessons too. Email me : info@song-bike.com
This Beginner Finger-Picking video introduces an easy, useful pattern that professional guitarists and songwriters use frequently. Landslide by Fleetwood Mac is a great example! Here's a plan: 1) Memorize The Pattern; 2) Play It Slowly, watching your right-hand fingers carefully; 3) Gradually pick up speed while keeping your fingers relaxed (this is important!!) Lastly, judge your progress in terms of weeks, not days. Playing anything well on the guitar requires a LOT of repetition, more than you'd think, more than you'd prefer !! Stick with it! It's worth it and you can do it !

You've inspired me SmokeFlame1... are you still here 2 years later? I just turned 70 and have a similar story to you, I also learned a few chords at the age of 14 but never kept it up, even though I've had guitars in and out of my life over the years but I could never apply myself and I've always wanted to learn finger picking because I'm bored with strumming and the style of music I always used to play, which was pop/rock... I hope you've got a success story to share with us... I guess it's never too late to learn...

Thanks for the lesson Jonathan! You have a great teaching demeanor! I just turned 67, and music has always been a passion of mine, from a garage band in the 60's to now. I'm an average guitar player, and am still learning. I can finger pick a little, but self taught, and developed some bad habits and muscle memory. I hope with your help I can become a better player. I know from experience, it takes lots of practice and patience. I'm going to try to stay with this. There's nothing more beautiful than a good finger picked tune! Thanks for your efforts!

While enjoying playing chords and following my Scott Tennant and Hal Leonard books I try and break the lessons up with some songs. My first search this morning brought up this video and It is wonderful. It adds to my current lessons and opens up so many new doors to music. I picked it up pretty quick and this lesson parallels the two paths of study I use. Beautiful music made easy. I honestly feel like a new door was opened. Thanks again!! George

I learned what you are teaching us and once I got relatively good, I covered the e minor chord with my ring and pinky, using my index as a capo, moving to the next fret all the way up the neck. It sounds really cool. I'm 72 and started learning in April because I want to keep my mind from turning into an old man's mind. I surfed around you tube till I found your page and stopped looking. Thanks so much.

Fantastic teacher! I’ve played guitar for years but never attempted finger picking, It’s about time I learned - especially if I’m trying to play John Prine and Bob Dylan songs. I really appreciate your teaching style, thank you!

These half-hour lessons are great! Go to most professional music instructors, and they would charge about $20-$25 for lesson's like these! You can tell he's taught many remedial students like myself, so he breaks it down properly, haha. Definitely worth a donation! Thanks

Great job - I tried every youtube lesson for fingerpicking over the last few weeks but always came back to yours. What helped me is I wrote out the numbers- 6 3 4 2 on a large piece of paper and stuck it on the side of my filing cabinet beside my desktop computer- Each time I grab my guitar I spend five or ten minutes going through it, slow, but I know that eventually my brain will send the message to my fingers. Also found that since I started I can play my bass notes so much better now. Wish I had started this sooner.. Thanks again..

Hi Peter, all progress begins with slow repetition. If you're patient, results will come. If you're pursuing the guitar on your own, think of yourself as "self-motivated." That's as valuable as a teacher !
Excellent lesson....you have a great teaching style.......
Your video is both informative and inspiring. Will practice now over the Xmas hols.Thank you Dave
