6/29/23 update!
I can't believe this little video is still going and GOING! Guys, thanks for watching - it means a lot. I've 500+ videos but this was one of the first and I didn't even originally make it for KZread. I know it looks like it was made in 1984 instead of 2012, believe me. But the content is still very cool.
Please join me on Saturdays at 5pm ET for my free KZread Guitar Q+A livestream. Just text your questions about learning the guitar and I'll answer as many as I can in about 2 hours. If you can't make it on Saturdays, the livestreams are available to watch afterwards and soon I'll be making them into podcasts as well. I look forward to your questions!
And if you're serious about getting better at the guitar, check out my website www.song-bike.com. Lots of great content and PDFs - stuff NOT AVAILABLE on KZread.
I do online lessons too. Email me : info@song-bike.com
This beginner rhythm guitar video teaches the classic Boom-Chicka Strum Pattern. You can't play Americana, folk, country or bluegrass without this so master it asap ! The Boom-Chicka feel is found in so many rock songs; I like Friend Of The Devil by The Grateful Dead. It's simplicity makes it great for songwriting too. Memorize the pattern so you can keep your eyes on your hands. Go slowly. It's worth it!! Be patient and judge your progress in terms of weeks, not days. You can do it !!

I’ve been a professional singer for most of my adult life and now at the age of 87 have decided to have a go at backing myself on guitar. Have mastered a range of basic chords and just discovered your brilliant app Johnathan which is brilliant for beginners like me finger picking and interesting strumming now seem to be attainable so thanks a million

Hi Frank nice to know there is another optimistic Oldy out there determined to master a new skill. It doesn’t matter whether or not you are a “good singer” it will be lovely to do it just for your own enjoyment and who knows you might just discover that your better than you thought. My advice is that should you find yourself entering the professional arena don’t sell yourself cheaply God bless to you too 😁

I have the HD - 16 RGT ... and the new Martin DX J Cash series guitar.. cheers. I Gave my good Martin D35 J. Cash Commemorative Edition acoustic guitar to his eldest grandson Thomas Gabriel, last spring.
Very nice instruction, well produced, nice studio. As a guitar teacher myself, I appreciate your clarity and sound advice.
I am glad I found your lessons. I tried lessons in a music store and I could not continue since I have bad neck problems and could not sit upright in their chair. So I will take lessons at home from you with my head resting back in my comfortable tall lounger. I know it is not the best position but it is all I can do. So thank you for your relaxed, fun, and informative lessons. I am 60 and I really enjoy playing.

my 10 years old nephew can play some tunes by going to a classic guitar teacher. but I've always telling his mother she has to learn to play chords if she really wants to go on and having more fun with more stuff to play with also with friends. but I didn't know how convince her. and here I found you, showed her and I got it. now my nephew has a new proper guitar to start with, a new modern guitar teacher, and you as an english pc great second (but best for me) teacher for power chords and then more and more, I hope.. thanks man you're great and helped so many people mostly for free, mainly for passion. rare thing, nowadays. this is something even more important to teach to guys. best things in life, as love, are priceless. don't measure always life with money...

Thanks so much, Bernard! By the way, I just wrote my first guitar book ! It goes along with my D-C-G Trick video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZZOl0qatlq_No5s.html And I made a NEW D-C-G Trick video to go along with the book - you can see it and buy the book here: www.song-bike.com. And I have LOTS of videos at www.song-bike.com available to members. Please check it out !! And please subscribe to my KZread channel!
Jonathan thanks so much for the lessons. Where i live in AK its really difficult to find a teacher and have found your lessons SOOO valuable. Especially This one, the C D G trick and the beginner lesson. I can actually play something that sounds like music and thats what keeps me picking up the Guitar! And now knowing "give me one reason" is awesome. Thanks so much.

Great clip Jonathan!
Awesome teacher thank you
Hahaha. Can't believe this is from 2013. The production makes it look straight out of 1993 or something. No criticism there. Just kind of a bang-on '90s tv look. Great vid. I'm an upper-intermediate player and I can do a lot of fancy stuff. But I never got this strum figured out. The advice about a heavier attack on the bass vs. a light strum was exactly what I needed to understand.

I loved this video- I'm always pausing and rewinding other tutorials because they go so fast (I'm a be...gin...ner) and I found myself laughing and actually enjoying this video because of the pacing and the anecdotes. That was fun! thanks & keep it up! :)
