Step one for dovetails. Get the Jonathon Katz Moses jig. Step two. Realize that the pull saw you have sucks. Get the Suizan or whatever it’s called. Yes it’s $30 bucks. But once you use it you’ll be blown away. All the other stuff helps. But the Katz Moses jig plus a good Japanese pull saw and you’re all set.

I still remember learning how to make dovetails at school in 88. I remember for hard woods you could use a 1 in 6 slope for softer woods, more. Some people go as far a 1mm for every 12... I think in the year 2021, they should learn how to make router dovetail joints.

I think a good "new skill" challenge for the boys would be a through and pinned mortise and tenon joint ( no glue) like was common in furniture building throughout Europe historically. bump it up by making it all 100% hand tools, no electricity at all. I have made beds, long tables ( dining tables) and even pantry shelves with this method, and they look outstanding, and test chisel skills, Brace and bit skills, as well as engineering to make sure the pins and holes are placed, such that it draws the joints together very tightly.
