Beginner bass lines - the 3rd edition is here! It’s always good to have songs in your arsenal that you can pull out when someone says: “Play something for me”.
Two of the most popular videos on the BAB KZread channel and the website itself are the ones that offer exactly that - songs and bass lines that are so strong and so memorable that you can play just the bass line and it’ll make you look like a badass.
And that’s even when the bass lines really simple to play.
So today, I’m releasing the 3rd installment of my Beginner Bass Lines - Guaranteed To Impress series.
There are always tons of comments and emails from people asking me to show them beginner songs, so I scoured my emails and comments and found the most popular requests and put them into this video.
When I made the first video in this series, I never really expected it would be quite as popular as it turned out, so if you have beginner songs that you think would fit the bill, just let me know in the comments! (But no - Primus bass lines do NOT fit the bill)
By the way, in case you haven’t seen the other Beginner Bass Line videos, you can check them out right here: • Beginner Bass Lines - ...
Good luck with the lesson and happy playing!
Cheers,
Luke
P.S. If I went too fast for you in the lesson, feel free to grab the tabs and notation of all the bass lines we went through in this video. You can sign up for them here:

I am a struggling 76yrs newbie and really have to say thank you for the downloads and help. I wish I could afford one to one lessons with you as you explain everything really clearly. Also your enthusiasm in infectious!!
I LOVE YOU! I am a nearly 40 yo working mum and I am learning bass the last 3 months, no teacher, no time. You are BY FAR my fav KZread teacher. (also, my first language is Spanish so I appreciate the fact that you speak really clearly and put subtitles in you videos). Greetings from Santiago, Chile.

luke you are really humble bass player, besides from being genious bass player.. you still humble and trying to share your passion.. thanks for your videos, i've learned lot of it..
This needs to become a series. Ranging from beginner, intermediate and harder basslines. Really helpful videos

Awesome lesson. I'm trying to read music so these lessons are great!
hi luke i really want to thank you for these videos you are helping me a lot to learn how to play bass really well and moreover for free, so thank you very much, i hope that soon we will have more videos like that
I've been playing classical guitar for a while but recently picked up my first bass. It really is a lot of fun.
This is how a tutorial should be like! Thanks Luke!!!
Great selections of riffs
I am a new beginner. Thank you for your patience. You are so cool.
Great video. Please keep uploading more videos like this. All of your videos are really helpful for me, since I'm a beginner bass player. 😎👏👏

Dude! I love these, and they have me playing base and impressing family and friends. The two your missing are the temptations Just my Imagination. and Lovely Day. Just my Imagination is basically one lick all the way through with just a couple of one note breaks. Super easy and a classic base line.
Dude so simple but so affective. Love your way of teaching. Thanks

Man got my bass yesterday. Can play feel good Inc quite well, but don't stop believing I'm struggling with. Getting my fingers to hit the frets
Great job, man! So much inspiration for a beginner bassist such as myself. If you want to continue the series, might I suggest "Keep the Faith" by Bon Jovi? It might not be their most well-known banger but it's a cool song and an even cooler bassline.
Thank you.
PLEASE MAKE MORE!!! I’ve made a band at school and I feel I’m the one at the back of the talent scale, and I’d LOVE TO KEARN MORE SONGS!!!

I love the videos being a VERY new beginner, but when your showing finger placement it’s hard to see which finger your using. When I think you using your index your ring finger is on the fret as well. I’m sure when I get the notes learned it won’t be an issue but for now it’s kind of tricky learning what your doing. BUT... I absolutely love the videos! Very informative! Thank you!!!
Thanks Luke, Great stuff!

Beginners would like learning the riff to My Girl by the Temptations
@trexinvert
4 жыл бұрын
That's a great riff for an "easy" beginner scale homework. Look up the major pentatonic scale(this is same as major scale minus the 4th and 7th notes, so you end up with only 5 notes....5=penta..get it). Then play this scale or riff(yes same thing) from root to octave. Meaning start on E(fat string) and play the scale up to E(skinny string). Keep on.
@IgNaceus

The actual bass line is far more nuanced than it seems. It's James Jamerson after all.
Thanks for the lesson. I was just curious why you would't play the Cream riff from the D Minor Pentatonic position? It would seem easier not to have to shift. Thanks!
@BecomeABassist
4 жыл бұрын
You could totally do that as well! I just like to be able to slide up to the D in the last little part of the riff.

Can you show how to play the opening bassline for the "Barney Miller" TV show, and the opening bass lick for "John Wayne was a Nazi" by M.D.C.?
Dude, when you play money, how do you go from 4th fret on G to 4th fret on D with only little finger, no matter how hard I try I can not do that I its small finger on G and ring finger on D
It would be cool for you to play Undone-The Sweater Song Weezer
She Bop by Cindy Lauper has a great bass riff

@T Glenn - are you talking about the tablature (tabs)? If so, then yes - the numbers represent fret numbers. If you're interested and want to learn more, I have a whole video about how to read tabs right here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/i2V725eJZ9nNlto.html

The Pink Floyd riff fingering is easier to remember if you use the 5th fret notes instead of open strings. It all fits into one hand position. Plus, you don't have to mess with muting the opens.
