Before you buy a Smiths from Timefactors - Review of Smiths Everest Expedition, sale and support

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Smiths watches by Timefactors are quite good for the price, but be aware that the quality of the bracelet is a bit a letdown. Worst part, however, is the rude "customer support" of the owner and single manager of the company.
You can read more, and also about the alleged customer support email exchange in the following link: ningunterra.com/2020/11/20/ti...
I keep proof of the conversation using timestamps and the blockchain.
Note:
Seems I'm not the only one with this kind of problems...:

Thanks for the video Mario. For yourself and Eddy should he read these comments - I will no longer be following through with a planned purchase from him because his messages here show that he doesn't seem to care to speak to his customers like equal human beings. That's a deal breaker no matter his business or product.

Ive never OEMed or ran a retail business but he is right that a great quanity of returns are usually not actually faulty. That being said he said 40% werent actually faulty meaning 60% are. When I worked retail at a major appliance and tool store id say 70% werent faulty it was either buyers remorse, a "free rental", or Improper use. I cant believe he said that. I get having a strict policy especially for a small business but that doenst excuse behavior and absolutely no customer service. This is supposed to be a tool watch and hes relegating it to special occasion because you cant trust it.

He did the same thing to a friend of mine. There is no problem first. Then try bending the latch with a pliers. When that didn’t work, he couldn’t take the watch back because my friend sized the bracelet or he doesn’t sell the bracelet or clasp by itself. All the while his correspondence was rude and condescending. Now, he has revealed my friends name and personal info on a forums that he moderates. How can this lunatic be stopped?

I have had a contact too recently and the feeling I got right away is just..insecurity and lack of any quality service support. If the gentleman doesn’t want to be bothered by customers why should he produce and sell watches? Creating a hype? No way! Being rude, offensive and demeaning towards people showing preference to his products and willing to spend their money purchasing them, is totally unacceptable! You can feel at once trying to get hold in this company. Short, vague, hard to comprehend sentences as though someone is slamming a door at your face. Is purchasing a watch and honouring a product that offensive to this gentleman? No is the answer. But his demeanour certainly is one. Mr Mario, I really admire your patience and your good manners in this interaction. Every person with a medium level of self respect has reached to a conclusion about what he is about to face if he tries a purchase. I d pick a safari in wild Africa instead. More chances to survive the experience

If he is unable to deal with critics or simple comments about preferences or even only people asking for some advice or help, he should simply not work in the Internet. Thanks! You've saved me time and money. I'll look elsewhere. I'm not a fan of this type of limited window buying experience. I get that it's supposed to trigger a collector's FOMO (fear of missing out) impulse, making them purchase the item when they otherwise might not. Ming, Chrono Tokyo, and countless artists are moving to this exclusivity, blink and you miss it type of purchasing model. However, I'm not a sheep blindly following the hype and herd. If an item isn't available regularly than I'm not jumping through hoops to get it.

Really sorry to hear of your bad experience. (Just watched the video on WatchCrunch). Tbh I was kind of surprised. I got a Smiths commando late last year in the all too brief ordering window, and it was taking a long time to be delivered. I contacted Eddie and he was quite helpful. Sure, his answers were brief and to the point, very matter of fact, but I was asking about a delivery and didnt want his life story anyway, and couldnt care less about pleasantries - maybe its a Northern England trait? I live in the North West and my colleges are always saying I am brief (almost) to the point of being rude - I dont notice it myself! I can only go from my own experiences, and I didnt have any issue with the watch itself, but he was ok with me and I would order again. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Of course, not all experiences should be like mine and yes, some people are too brief, but in my case it wasn't what happened. I appreciate briefness to be honest, but in the case I mention he showed a bully behavior and total lack of respect thus I warn people so they are aware of what could happen should anything go wrong with the watch. I everything is fine I see no problem happening, but there are quite some similar examples of this behavior. In this day and age people without skills to interact with other human beings should simply someone to do that job. That is business 101. This said, I hope you enjoy the watch. I had the same experience Mario, I placed an order for a PRS-29 only to not receive the watch after a month. I email Eddie and he said that it was my banks fault as the charge on the card had lapsed and he was no longer able to take the money. I then asked if he could just send me the watch again but he said I'd need to wait till the store was open. The only issue with this was that there was very limited stock and I knew I'd miss out. Anyway I took to the forum to explain my issue (which some other forum members agreed with me) to only get banned. I know of others who have dealt with him and been fine but the whole experience has soured my interest in the brand. Another thing to note is that if you return an item, he charges you a 2.5% restocking fee which I think is ridiculous and something I've never come across before.

  • @TheWatchFrame

In my case with the first try to get the Expedition he said, after a month without any communication, that it had been kind of his fault as he didn't realize about the retention limit in banks. Funny cause that I know about and was kind of logical. Nevertheless it's not the first time I hear about forum banning for any kind of criticism. That's why I never talked about this in the forum. This is also not a very gentle behaviour on his side.

I have a couple of Smiths watches - a PRS-40 Nato and the new Caribbean. Both were a nightmare to get hold of via the ordering 'system' - and on a Facebook group for microbrand watches I said something as simple as 'I don't understand why they wouldn't just operate a waiting list system'. Eddie turned up in the comments and chewed me out of over it. I asked him if he could see from the number of negative comments about the buying experience that he might need to change it. He said 'my watches sell out so there's no problem here'. It took me over 8 months to get the PRS-40 and 2 attempts at landing the Caribbean. If the Caribbean wasn't such a looker I'd never have bought from him again.

I am bout to receive the Everest 36mm after my city exits the lockdown state and plan to buy some leather straps for it. Regarding the not-so-friendly attitude of the owner, I do agree. I did mail him to ask for some specs of the Everest so I can provide them to my leather atelier. I want the strap to flush with the lugs well, and he just told me to lend the watch to the atelier so they can do the job by themselves ... But my country is being in the lockdown for 3-4 months and shipping a watch across the cities would be quite difficult. Guess I have to wait when I receive the watch and then, do the measurements myself.

Yes, the point I wanted to make with this video was they way the owner of the company treated me and seemed to treat others. The issue with the end link is the anecdote that sparked what I would call a stupid behavior from the single person behind Timefactors back at the day. On the other hand what was defective was the end link and he could have easily solved this sending a spare end link and all would have been over. I have had similar issues with other brands and it all got solved easy and smooth. Going back to the end link, I had to get a thinner but resistant spring bar that would not be forced because of the twisted end link to fit the lug hole. With that it got solved so the person who bought the watch would not have issues until he managed to get another end link.

I'm going to help Mr. Eddie Platts with this one. The opening window is very thin, around a few minutes only. Best thing is for you to subscribe to the Timefactors newsletter so you will get an email with the information for the next opening: www.timefactors.com/subscribe.htm. Here you have information about the next opening: www.timefactors.com/closed2.htm. Once you know the exact opening moment the best thing is to be five minutes before the opening in front of your computer with your credit card information. Refresh the page of the watch information until able to buy it. If it doesn't open at the exact time or gets hanged, wait a few seconds and try again. There've been cases it took a few minutes for all to work. Once you have the watch in the basket, do not hesitate and go to pay the item as soon as possible. Best advice: do not wait and be first in line.

@@TheWatchFrame The strange approach to retail I can recognize as his choice, if it works for him then good luck to him as it's his business (just as it is our choice whether or not to buy). However, good aftersales support and decent customer service shouldn't be affected by unorthodox selling practices. Other retailers (including many microbrand) do e-commerce and customer service extremely well so there is no reason others can't. I was interested in the Dreadnought Voyager as I wanted a tough diver watch for hostile environments (including recreational diving) and wanted a change from my default G Shock Frogman (magnificent watch if you are OK with quartz and digital). The GMT function would also be useful as i travel a lot internationally for work in normal times. The Dreadnought has a great specification and great price, it looked ideal.but i bought a Marathon GSAR which though marginally more expensive offered greater comfort in clearly being made in accordance with the ISO diver's standard so it is clear what you are getting (a pet hate of mine is dive watches which say nothing about what standards they are built to). Also i felt it was dishonest to put "Great Britain" on a watch made in Germany in a way which most would assume signifies built in Britain. It's not that i have anything against German watches, quite the opposite as my favourite watch companies are mainly German(Tutima, Muhl, Damasko, Sinn, Stowa) but i just didn't like the deceptive use of the words. I honestly never realized you had to jump through hoops to buy one.

@@johnbradshaw5900 I believe the Smiths are made and assembled in Hong Kong but could be wrong. The Great Britain states as designed in Britain, which is true, but I agree that microbrands should be transparent with this. This is the way some are working, clearly telling where things are being made, like Traska, Lorier or Dan Henry for instance. I love quarz watches, have a few myself, but my eyesight is getting poorer thus I need simple three handers (if possible without date) and yes a GMT is very important. Now I have dual time zone wathc, a Glycine Double Twelve but in the future I the Lorier Hyperion in the short list. Also have a Stowa Marine in the short list, to replace the white Everest Expedition, but much further in the line. I totally agree, in this day and age, having good selling practices and great support care is being more and more important each day. Of course there can always be problems, but it's important to know how to solve them the best possible way for all the parties.

Thank you for posting this Mario. I'm very glad I found your channel as I agree with you on many things. I too was hoping to purchase a Smiths Everest to have a 36mm 1016 homage, but I was disappointing in the buying experience. After waiting several weeks, I woke up early one Sunday and had a 5 minute window. My purchase didn't go through because my bank didn't allow the credit card payment to go through because it was "suspicious" by their system. I was so frustrated that I gave up on this watch and purchased an Explorer 114270 instead. Later when the 1016 itch returned, I was very pleasantly rewarded when I purchased an Incipio IX, a very nice Japanese 1016 homage. I plan to post a review video soon. Thank you!

I've had a couple email interactions with Eddie over the last decade, not a very pleasant person to be talking to. I finally made a purchase with this limited window store setup for the baby dreadnought and a caribbean, thankfully my watches arrived in great condition and running fine, which was a big relief as I have been reading of his legendary customer service for years. I don't mind the limited window so much, and I knew it was going to be a bit of a risk to make the purchases, but ultimately am glad I did as the watches were great quality at a great price to match. As a matter of fact this is not the worst part of the whole thing. Many micro brands work in such fashion, although, usually with way better webs, pre sale events and so on. Also normal micro brands don't fail in issues like reserving the payment in the cards of the clients only to realize you have a limit period to do so. This is selling 101. Also I did inform Mr. Platts about the possible issues trying to have those amounts on hold on accounts for a long period of time. It's not like I didn't try to be supportinve all the way (being a promoter of his brand). The problem here is that Mr. Platts seems to have some kind of insecurity and he tries to do everything in his business. I know how these things end up finally. The person simply breaks and so the whole business with him. It's not like he has a great health (and I truly wish him to recover from his surgeries). He could have teamed with a couple of professionals, maybe hire a CEO to run the business as a whole and he could only concentrate on the presidency and the design of the watches. Should have he hired a person for public relationships and customer support, and this stupid interaction would have never happened. Now, he's selling a product people like and want, and some believe that he must be cool for doing so. Well, he's not, he's chill and you can fool people for a while, but not forever. Time tic tacs (pun intended) :D.
