Theres a few smiths watches i would buy if the company wasnt a nightmare to deal with, theres no denying the watches are lovely but im not begging somebody to sell me a watch. Ive waited a long time to get a helm but at least you know youre gonna get it eventually!

What a beautiful watch! But personally, I would only be ready to jump through the hoops to get one if the store had good customer service as well. But I've heard rumours indicating customer service isn't always as accommodating as it could be, which is why I unsubscribed from the notification list. One side note: the Rolex Milgauss' antimagnetism of 1,000 gauss is put to shame by a-magnetism of 15,000 gauss of modern Omega 8800 calibres.

Mate, you're adding to the pile of people who are telling me the customer service isn't great... If this many people are saying it, there has to be something wrong there. And I'll be reviewing a watch with that anti-magnetic capacity soon, don't worry ;)

Great review and the watch really does look gorgeous. I think the miyota 9000 series movements are the same exact quality as a ETA 2824. I hear people say that they can be noisy but I have 4 watches that have them in it and I have never heard anything like that really.

Thanks so much, mate. And I think the more I've handled, the better they've been. They seem to have been getting quieter. I know that sounds odd and it's probably more to do with the casing but I'd be perfectly happy with one now to be honest.

I have the salmon and black ones. They are stunningly beautiful. I also hand an aventurine dial incoming so will likely sell the black. As terrific as these look, I would prefer at least a mm smaller diameter.

An aventurine dial must look incredible in the flesh on one of these though!

Love the style, love the dial butttt... From what i remember reading about the owner he's quite the d-bag when it comes to criticism, even banning people from his little forum for disagreeing and if you run into warranty issues he may give you a hard time if you're unlucky. This along with the unsigned crown, not being 36mm (which i'd prefer for this style) and extremely limited ways of actually purchasing it is big enough of a put off to not want to buy a Smiths. Great review none the less, had me laughing :D

Nice one, Terrence! I'm not hearing great things about the brand, I must say. I can understand it must be a lot as one person to deal with but watches DO suffer QC problems from time to time. I mean, I always think Jason from Halios comes across really well on any interactions and that brand obviously has a similar reputation for scarcity for the sake of it. I don't think that, I should add, but just that running a one-man-shop-cum-distribution centre must be gruelling but he deals with it - the hiccups and disgruntled potential customers - in a really good way. As for sizing, I've recently been filming what for me is the ultimate 36mm watch - a Datejust. Kind of the perfect size.

Too classy for a shabby bastard like me. But I wished Smiths did 39mm instead of 36mm pieces, but then again another part of me is glad they only do 36mm so I can just forget about the Smiths ordering shenanigans, which like Halios and Zelos, is a right PITA.

I'd go through hell and high water for a Halios (possible ad slogan for them there...) but I think the people trying to make a quick buck on a Zelos colourway are bonkers. This doesn't solve the problem of availability, but it is 38mm - www.timefactors.com/collections/smiths/products/smiths-commander-prs-60

No jokes and a watch that's hard to get hold of and has a dial it'schallenging to match up with the rest of the attire? Unsubscribe... No, just kidding. I actually like that watch, even though I've just seen it for the first time. It's very nice when old design gets a revival and still manages to looks contemporary whilst at the same time like an heirloom. Not many watches can pull this off to that extent this seems to do. I kinda want to put this on my list, as it would fit quite perfectly with my vintage (first half of the 1900s) flyfishing gear. My current Sugess Moonphase Master is a bit too dressy, and my only proper vintage watch has the water resistance of a bog roll. That bracelet looks pretty damn nice on the Smiths. Only drawback is it gives zero stealth points for it's sparklyness, and I refuse to use the G shock I use when salmon fishing, it goes better with my Scottish/Norwegian designed graphene rods, hi-tech lines and titanium reels. But for Hardy Bamboo and gun metal reels for trout and grayling fishing I need something with refinement and aesthetics. Sometimes I wish blokes like Sir Edmund Hillary and Jacque Cousteau did more trout fishing and less exploring, maybe I would have a better suited watch then for my needs then. Actually, a good alternative might be Eterna Kon-Tiki. I mean, how could they make a watch designed for playing polo, but not a watch for flyfishing? They were about equally popular amongst the aristocracy I believe. But, maybe they had some unwritten philosophy that not wearing a watch whilst fishing was a good excuse to get a few hours extra fishing...

Hahaha, I wouldn't blame anyone... I think you're the first person I've spoken to whose watches need to match their fishing gear, to be honest, mate - ha, it's a nice conundrum to have! The KonTiki is definitely its own thing. I like the GMT one. www.jurawatches.co.uk/products/eterna-watch-royal-kontiki-gmt-7740-43-41-1289-etn-040 A bit pricey though, just to keep track of the hours (or not, as the case may be!) spent fly fishing.
