We rescued Bruce our Douge de bordeaux 18 months ago.... We have owned many dogs over the year's but never a dog like Bruce.. When he looked into your eye's he was looking into your soul..Most loving caring dog. Sadly a week ago he went off his food and lost weight rapidly he wouldn't eat rice/chicken and wouldn't take his medication. Took Bruce to vets Thursday & again Friday.. His heart was enlarged and fluid was filling his body, we knew that he wanted to leave us and go over the rainbow bridge.. My partner son me were with him till the end and he looked into my partners eye's all the time till he fell asleep. 18 months of pure love from this beautiful boy who came into our lives.. We are heartbroken 💔 but couldn't let this gentle giant suffer.. We love you forever Bruce.

Try a Great Dane next ! I have had both , my vote the Danes ! The Bull Mastiffs are more independent. The Danes are always watching out for you and if they see ANYTHING of harm to you , LOOK OUT !!!!!. The Bull Mastiffs will be there, but only after you have a problem, the Danes would NEVER let it get to that point .

I have a black faced Douge de Bordeaux and he is 6 now. He still runs like the wind and enjoyes acerage to inspect and guard with many neighbors on the boundaries. I have kept him a lean as possible and other than a kneerèconstruction he had early in his life he is fit and strong. I have ambitions to get him to 11 or 12 years. Wish me luck. By the way he is called Caesar.

The DDB is one of the most reliable dogs I have ever seen and that alone tells me, that it's a smart breed, not a stupid one. They can assess situations very well, be it with children, other dogs or strangers. They even undestand doing all the tricks other dogs love to do, if you are really lucky and the DDB is in a good mood, you can see it, but they simply have their own head most of the time.

The DDB is an intelligent dog but they are extremely stubborn. My girl solved dog puzzles with ease at a very young age. These were games designed for the likes of Border Collies. She is extremely strong but very social to both humans and all animals. Few, if any dog breed have more personality than a DDB. With a lot of patient you can train them. The dog they used in the movie Turner and Hutch must have been extremely well trained.otherwise they would not let him grab Tom Hanks by the throat. It is not often other “actors” is better than Tom Hanks in any of the movies I have seen him in, however in this movie Hutch is the biggest star.

From what I have read they used two dogs to play Hutch. One the used as actor , the other one did the jumping and running. Apparently the actor was a relative small dog for the breed. Perhaps that is why they had the other and probably bigger do the action scenes because he looked more scary.

Mastiffs are not stubborn, just very very intelligent and strong independent dogs who will always way up whats in it for them before acting on your wishes, unlike a gsd or dobie or any of the traditional working breeds, if you cant deal with a dog that has a mind of its own then its not the breed for the inexperienced

A more loyal and kind dog you will not find , I hope this helps someone like me who is on the fence with this breed .

She's very affectionate and loves her sister, a pit/Bassett mix. She was a rescue. And an glad she is part of our family. As stated, beware, DDBs are very stubborn even more than bull mastiffs which have been part of my life for over 15 years.

my breeder selected my ddb for me to do Schutzhund but to make a long story short she was an allergy dog so we couldnt do it. The point however is she was the most alert dog I have ever known. She was also the most independent thinking dog I have ever known. Outside of basic obedience that she only needed 2 repetitions to understand what I wanted, she would take my wishes under advisement but sometimes management would over rule my wishes...that lasted till she was 2 then a switch in her turned on and she decided my way was ok and she was a perfect lady from then on...maybe you have a dog like I did and they hear you but will only take your wishes under advisement till they mature more...

I have a female “Layla”. Hard headed is her biggest issue. She is very sweet but is also very possessive and will jump on the other dogs in a heartbeat. She is the ruler of the house. I also had her brother Harley. He was quick to learn and never a hard head. Unfortunately even before his 2nd birthday he started getting very aggressive towards other animals. He was set on killing my other dogs and cats. He never bothered Layla, but I had to actually get my fingers in his mouth and gag him to get him to release the other dogs or cats. He never bite me but I got chewed up pretty bad a few times by the ones he had in his mouth. I had to put him to sleep. Luckily that aggression is not in Layla. I would only get another DDB if he/she was the only one.

Maybe the Health and Longevity of this dog, would be improved - not to mention solving the brachycephalic problems which contribute to heart and organ problems due to lack of oxygen - by a crossbreeding of Colby Red Nose Pitbull or Vizsla into the Bloodlines and then cross them back with Dogue de Bordeaux. Whaddya think? I think it is possible that if many breeders do this it will introduce new genetic material to the gene pool and more than likely reduce the genetic mutations that have happened from close consanquinous breeding practices as the population of these dogs dwindled down and then the breed was revived from a very small specimen pool. This breed could use some tightening up of the skin, especially around the mouth area and fewer skin problems around the face and neck would be welcome. It would be kind of like the difference in the English Mastiff and the American Mastiff. It's a Mastiff all right, but the American has much tighter skin and drools less, has more stamina, has an average of 4 years longer life and then some. Also, it has a very spry step and can move very quickly, as it was begun as a cross between English Mastiff and the Kangal. The breed is 40 years old and you hardly hear of it, although KZread has a video or two of people training a young dog and believe me, I've been asking for more from Rocadog Channel, Fenrir [name the breed] Channel, or IAMWILLATHERTON lnstagram, and whatever other Dog Channel video I am watching I will ask for one.

i have an american ban dogge french mastiff crossed with american bulldog and hes my first dog and hes the best i love him so much and hes just turned 6 months and hes big already and hes not aggressive unless i try take his bone or good food off him he growls and snaps hahaha once he was sick and i got tissue and went to clean it and he snapped and growled at me and look like he wanted to bite my hand haha so i let him eat his sick haha. when i come home from work i get on one knee and he puts his paws and arms on my shoulders and starts kissing me licking me and moving his head left and right of my face and then i stand on my knees so im a bit higher and he loves that and i hold him and hug him close and cuddle him and rub him and he gives me nibbles under my chin. he loves me i know it. his name is Muska
