Finally somebody who plays this magnificent concerto in the correct tempi, as Beethoven's student Carl Czerny reported them! Especially mentionable is the second movement! Everything makes sense like this! BRAVISSIMO! Why do I only discover this nine years after publishing? This recording should be made a compulsory listening task for violinists!

This is Opus 61a, Beethoven's arrangement of Opus 61 (Violin Concerto in D major) for piano. It is not the (Hess 15) Piano Concerto No. 6 in D major (which Beethoven only partially finished). They are two completely different and distinct works.

As many have pointed out, this is NOT Beethoven's 6th Piano Concerto, was never called that by the composer who published the piano transcription BEFORE the publication of his 5th Concerto. And he NEVER called his one and only opera "Leonora " : it was always called Fidelio from it's first performance in 1805. It was only after Richard Strauss conducted a revival of the original version in 1905, that the publisher decided to call the original version in "Leonora " to distinguish it from the definitive version of 1814.

Beethoven is always Beethoven, always brilliant. But it does seem strange that such a master of the keyboard didn't do more to make this dynamic and pianistic. He certainly knew how. And it is certainly dynamic on the violin. The pianistic texture is thin and treble-heavy throughout.

Google indicates that this numbering relates to his piano transcription of the wonderful violin concerto so more confusion. I have been listening to the great man for over 70 years and never heard of a sixth concerto per se. I am sure this topic may continue to be debated for many years yet (at least by those of us who care!!🤨

Hello - yes, I quite agree that Beethoven would NOT have wanted this concerto to be known as his 6th. The fact that everyone generally thinks of "the five piano concertos" is reasonable - Beethoven published five..but of course there exist ELEVEN distinct effort that feature the piano interacting with orchestra...these are in chronological order: 1) the youthful Eb concerto (WooO4); the Bb rondo (Woo6). (which was the original rondo to the Bb concerto); the Bb concerto (op 19); the concerto in C (op 15), in C minor (op 37); the concerto for Piano Trio (op 56); the concerto in G (op 58); the adaptation of the D major Violin Concerto (op 61a), the Choral Fantasy (op 80); the Emperor Eb Concerto (op 73) and the SUBSTANTIAL fragment of his last venture into the concerto form - the concerto in D for piano and orchestra begun in 1814 (known as Hess 15). The publisher of the Violin Concerto (Clementi in London) asked Beethoven to supply a version for the piano soon after the violin version was received and published. It may in fact be true that early on there was MORE interest in the score for piano and orchestra than for the initially unsuccessful violin version. And a trivia question: for WHICH concerto did Beethoven provide a cadenza that featuresTHE TIMPANI as well as the piano solo? :)

@@nickjgunning He wrote the piano version on demand of the publisher Clementi. That got him an extra fee. However, both versions are authentic Beethoven! However, he was not a "fully trained violinist". In his early years, he played the viola in the opera orchestra in Bonn. That's why he did not compose a cadenza for the violin version; only for the piano version we have Beethoven's original cadenzas!

Where the first and second movement are clearly better for the violin, the third sounds obvious for a piano concerto third-moevement. Not to say it is brilliant as well for violin-and-orchestra as well. But most of Beethovens works are very good.

In the description "original" means that the transcription has been done by Beethoven himself. So it is definitively an original Beethoven work. As far as I remember he did it because at the beginning his violin concerto was not very popular. I think it is a very interesting work that should be played more often.

Yes, he did the transcription himself, I suspect for commercial reasons. - to get it heard more often. BUT as far as I am aware he never classed it as his “6th”. It is not for us mere devotees to muck about with his cataloguing. We must accept the work as his product and not to give it a false description.

Beethoven didn't wrote only 5 piano concertos. we have the piano part of a "piano concerto no. 0", written at the age of 14. when he was already deaf he started the writing of a piano concerto, but he died before complete it, so we have only 30 pages. we have the choral fantasy op. 80 and the rondo for piano and orchestra in b-flat. and then, we have this piano concerto, completed from the first to the last bar, published along the violin version. so this is technically a piano concerto, written in 1808 along is piano concerto no.4, so we can call it "piano concerto no.6 in D major op.61a, after the Violin concerto".

Bit of an arrogant reply to be honest wotan, I may be wrong, but I don't think Beethoven ever got a recording contract and told the record company what he wanted to call this. "Beethoven's violin concerto transcribed for piano which I did because I was feeling in a good mood that day when I was asked" is a bit of a of a mouth full don't you think.(to be clear I'm being sarcastic, before you also inform me that records weren't invented then). He wrote 5 piano concertos and transcribed his violin concerto for piano himself. So when played with piano it gets referred to as above. I bet you like correcting people's pronunciation of foreign words too don't you.

Absolutely wrong. He rewrote it specifically for one of his students. Calling people arrogant because they have different information from you is just lazy and ignorant. There are so-called music lovers who are as fanatical about the publisher's notes as the score and the composition. You see them at concerts with a miniature score ready to write a complaint to a musical journal if the performer misses a hemi-demi-semi-quaver. We know Beethoven's playing was 'rough' and certainly the piano instructions for his broadwood of the time would not be suitable for a modern instrument.
