The BEST leather for the upper is shell cordovan. Will last for ever, takes a brilliant shine. Yes, Goodyear self construction, full leather lining, leather soles and combination heels. And keep them in FULL wooden shoe trees.

Interesting concept, thank you for the explanation. IMHO they may benefit from investing in more lasts in oddball sizes. Wouldn't really cost them much since they only make shoes to order anyway. I wear a 15, which makes them a non-starter for me. Again, thank you. Hope they expand their product line in the future.

I agree. I wear a size 14 (or really a 13.5 depending on the shoe), and it was only until the last 10 years that I've been able to find shoes that fit me--your shoe shopping must have been even tougher. Yes, it's a shame they don't carry 15's now.

I bought two pair of Beckett Simonon a year ago, the Dean Oxford and the Wright Austerity Oxford. I like the style and quality of the shoes, but unfortunately they run very narrow and I have been having difficulty breaking them in. I don't think they will ever be a comfortable shoe to wear, so I will not be a repeat Beckett Simonon customer which saddens me since I had high expectations for the brand.

Hey Rizal, that's tough. I'm not sure. I feel like everyone's feet are different, and I didn't really get into this in the video, but each shoe company uses different molds called "lasts" (maybe you've seen them: basically just wooden molds that looks like feet). So it really depends on the manufacturer and how their lasts fit your feet. I would try a few different brands if you can (in store if needed), to see which brands fit you best

Beckett Simonon is made in Portugal, with Blake Stitch, and retails for 300 USD. For 252 USD you can pick up a pair of mainline "Barker" goodyear welted shoes made in England all day everyday, which has by far superior quality and craftsmanship than say Allen Edmonds. For the 200 USD clearance price of Beckett Simonon, you could pick up a pair of discounted "Herring" which is also made in the UK, plus a pair of shoe trees and a shoe polishing kit. There is really no contest here. As a rule of thumb, shoe quality-wise England>Spain>Portugal=US. Alden is an exception.

TLB Mallorca is a great brand, goodyear costruction and the Artista line is the best value in GY welted shoes. And don't forget Carlos Santos from Portugal. Amazing shoes.

My position is that any company like Thursday, Beckett, acemarks, or any other mid range shoe isn’t work the money. Pay the extra 100 dollars to AE or To Boot for a quality shoe that lasts a life time when properly cared for. None of those companies come close to the leather quality of AE.

The only thing I used to go by is brand name. In men's shoes, I've found that Florsheim about the most shoe for the money. You'll pay premium bucks for them, but they will never disappoint. Nunn-Bush comes in a close second. I've had about 3 pair of Florsheim and had good wear out of all of them. I've even found that while the leather soles wear out and needs a new 1/2 soles, the uppers still stay in shape. Finally, after countless hours of wear, the uppers begin to break down (but they do so GRACEFULLY if that makes any sense!), but that's usually after I plan to retire or give them to Goodwill.

the problem with good quality shoes is that 1. yes, they can be repaired 2. they can come back worse than before with improper repair 3. number 2 happens 90% of the time. So good quality shoes require good quality cobblers. They still make good quality shoes but good quality cobblers come in very short supply these days. This is the reason if you own good expensive shoes, buy cobbler tools and supplies to do the repairs yourself. It is quite simple. I have some very nice and expensive English balmorals come back with low quality repairs.

No how no way I'm becoming my own cobbler. AE will do it right plus take most creases out of the uppers while making them look new again. But, they only offer that on AE's. $150 for the resole, cork midsole, shoe trees, felt shoe bags and some shoe cream, I think.

erm, GYW shoes are not THAT easy to repair, and if you as a beginner fuck up the welt you are in big, big trouble. Blake construction requires a special sewing machine. I take it that way you mean proper repair beyond patching up a heel or a hole in the middle of the sole.

  • @shanebrowning8862

AE’s are taken back to the store, sent back to WI, repaired thoroughly in house on the same last it was made on, uppers tightened and lubed, and sent back. I will be investing in a couple pair of these come April. I’m cheap, but you HAVE to quantify what quality means when determining cost. $70 shoes that last 6months at best? Or $300 plus re-sole job ($125ish) around midway for 10 years of wear. Easy math. Plus, a shoe like AE are actually much easier on your body. They won’t feel like it at first, but your feet, knees, hips and back will thank you a couple weeks into them.

Hey Rizal, I just tried it and it appears to work. I didn't go all the way through checkout, but when I added the offer code it took 15% off the price.

Why is it that so few shoe companies offer EEE or AAA widths? I don't understand why a company that specializes in shoes wouldn't have a full selection of sizes. Would you buy a suit that doesn't fit? Size availability should be considered in the quality of shoes.

Beckett Simonon? Nah man, go for Meermin or Orban's. Those shoes are goodyear welted (unlike Becket Simonon which are Blake stitched) and they're cheaper too (around $210 and $196 after shipping, respectively).

Np, let me know which one you end up buying. Meermin's been out for a while, Orban's is the new kid on the block. Other than that, one difference you can see is the leather sole of Meermin's shoes have closed channel stitching (you can't see any stitching on the bottom of the shoe but it's there) to make it look cleaner, as opposed to Orban's.

I've had my eyes on these for a while but I have no idea if they are worth that price as I'm a newbie when it comes to dress shoes www.thebay.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/en/thebay/brands/mens-shoes/murain-leather-cap-toe-oxfords-0600089841496--24 Gonna check out the ones you listed too, thx!

simi9222 definitely do NOT get that shoe in your link. Why? B/c it doesn't have a leather outsole. It says it's a resin outsole. Also, you don't know how that resin outsole is attached to the upper. Meaning, you don't know if it's good year welted, blake stitched, or even worse, cemented/glued. And it's still more expensive than Meermin or Orban's too, despite the reduced quality. If you want the best bang for your buck, Meermin or Orban's is the way to go. And specifically their 'whole cut" shoes. Why wholecuts? B/c if you think about it from a shoe maker's perspective, the hardest type of shoe to make is a wholecut, therefore they tend to be a little pricer. However, the wholecuts from Meermin or Orban's are the same price as non-wholecuts (eg captoes, wing tips, etc) so that's a good deal right there

Seems like things have gone awry with BS shoes. Ordered a pair in October. No video updates., just emails trying to get me to buy more. Just received the shoes in January and will be returning them. The tan color of the leather is blotchy and uneven. I noticed a dark stain near the heel. While I do like the style, the finish is not up to par for a $200 pair of shoes. JM's have a better finish. Lastly, while their website touts the ease of a return with the included return label, no such label was in the box. Given the long wait and the quality, I'll stick with Allen Edmunds or Alden.
