Beaver Who Loves the Bathtub Gets His Very Own Pond | The Dodo
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
This wildlife rehabber welcomed a baby beaver into her home. He loved building dams in her house and swimming in her bathtub. When some pond builders got wind of his story, they offered to build him his very own pond. Watch him dive in his new pond for the first time!

The coolest thing I ever saw was at a man-made pond a few miles from my home. It was stocked with fish And I was fishing there quietly one day. There was a beaver dam nearby and the Beavers came out to work on their house. There was splashing near the dam and I thought it was fish. One of the adult beavers swam out and brought a log part way back to the dam and I wasn't sure why it didn't bring it the whole way. Well I soon found out! The splashing was the baby beavers. The adult brought the baby out to the log and they pushed it to the Beaver dam together. It was teaching the baby what to do! Coolest thing I ever saw!!

That's awesome. Beavers are super-intelligent and industrious...Canada couldn't have picked a better species with which to be associated. I've seen beavers many times, but never the whole family at once. Usually just one beaver swimming at the surface of a lake is all you get (although one time I was in the right place at the right time, standing at the end of a floating dock on a VERY clear lake, and a beaver swam in from the middle of the lake, staying about 3 feet underwater - he was sleek and streamlined and using his tail for propulsion - anyway, he went right beneath my feet under the dock, and to the bank where I guess he had a little protected hideout). I think beavers are incredible...they're one of the only non-human animals that intentionally engineers their own environment at such a large scale to make it more suitable for their purposes. Lots of species do this unintentionally (just a fact of evolutionary happenstance), but beavers know what they want their habitat to look like, and they do what it takes to make it like that. It's a shame this characteristic gets them into so much trouble with humans. There's a place I visit where beavers have been repeatedly damming up a culvert running under a gravel road to raise the level of a swamp to their liking (a goal which unfortunately has the side effect of washing out the road)...they've been shot and trapped (probably almost 100 beavers have died in their fight to raise this swamp's water levels over the last 4 decades), their dams have been destroyed (often with dynamite!)...but more beavers just keep on coming back. I am happy to report that the beavers WON this long war though...people have finally given up trying to have a road at this location! However, wouldn't it be nice if we just let beavers be beavers, and chose to adapt to THEM, rather than force them to adapt to US?

@@MichaelSplatkins But, they cannot breed out 100% of the Fox's wildness. They can only be domesticated to a point. They will keep certain behaviors that are hardwired into their brain

@@DirectorOfChaos9292 For sure! The number of generations it'll take for optimal domestication could take many more generations, yet. But even dogs and cats still have wild instincts that unexpectedly arise from time to time. It's incredible how much sway individual genetic make up has on them even after so many millennia of being bred for placidity, compliance and affection.

@@DirectorOfChaos9292 Indeed. Technically house cats still retain much more of their instincts to this day than dogs because they only started being domesticated about 8,000 years ago vs dogs 14,000-20,000. A couple dozen popular breeds of cat today have actually only been bred for specific desired traits in the lest 100 years in fact. So I imagine it will certainly take a few more centuries before foxes enter the realm of true domestication. Might be different for herbivores(faster) as domesticated rabbits started about 2600 years ago but cannot survive in the wild with any success although gerbils have only been domesticated for a little over a century can fair as well as one can being a gerbil(2-3 years) in the wild.
At 3:44 my mom always told me that when an animal sucks on a blanket like that, that it was taken from it's mom to soon.

Also is sometime just a habit. My border collie pup that we got at 9 weeks still suckles and she’s now 7 yo. But I suppose the animal was an orphan so may exhibit the suckling behaviour due to missing out on that critical time with its mother.

My mom always said the same thing! Which I think is true because me any my mom adopted many street cats that didn't have any mom and they always sucked our pinky or a blanket (they still do)

I saw the build on The Pond Guys channel and from that perspective it was really interesting, but I always wondered what JB's backstory was. Thank you for featuring this ☺️
This pond habitat is the perfect solution for everyone. JB gets a natural home. The family gets to save their home from JB's instinctual behavior to chew on all things. And in the end everyone is happy and there is a great pond to be enjoyed by JB and the family. A win-win I would say.
She made it clear shes very protective of her beaver. Got it.
At least he keeps himself occupied. Lol. Loved watching him push the blanket aka trees around.
