Beautiful Restoration of Antique 1890s Piano Stool
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
When I saw this well worn piano stool in a thrift store it spoke to me. "Help me, I am buried under all this paint! My leg fell off and my arms are broken. I know you can do it Cynthia! Save me."
Well, I am a sucker for challenges to I paid $30 and took it to my shop. It ended up being a pretty big challenge to repair two broken spindles and to removed all that white paint!
This stool was made between 1830 and 1890. I knew it was old but did not realize that is was THAT old.
As most of you know, I usually take one week to refinish a project but the fact that this took 2 weeks is an indication of how much more was involved in bringing this little stool back to life.
While most of this video is without spoken words, I felt the need to add a narrative to explain in detail what I did to repair the spindle broken at the joints. As I worked on this stool I pictured it being used in a theater where they were playing silent films with a piano for background music. Or perhaps at a theater with vaudeville shows. Gosh, the stories this chair could tell...

Fabulous restoration, beautiful piano chair. You have so much patience but that is what gives such outstanding results.
WHAT A CHALLENGING LITTLE PROJECT. SMALL PROJECT, BIG JOB. IWAS THINKING OF ALL THOSE PIECES AND WAS HOPING YOU WOULDN'T HAVE MISSING PIECES. MY HEART SANK WHEN YOU SHOWED THE PART WHERE THE OLD DOWL HAD BROKEN OFF. I REALLY WATCHED YOU DO THIS FIX CAUSE I NEVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THERE WOULD BE AN EASY ONEL. IT TOOK YOU TIME FOR THE REPAIR, BUT IT TURTNED OUT WONDERFUL. SUPERB JOB.IT DOES LEAVE YOU WONDERING WHAT KIND OF CHAIR IT IS AND HOW IT WAS USED. IT WILL BE JUST FINE FOR ANOTHER 100 YEARS.
Hard to believe it is the same stool that you found in the thrift store! These antique piano stools can really be ornate in their design. First time I've seen one with blue glass balls in the feet.
Oh my God. it's a gorgeous. I love dark wood
I watched another refinished who had a great technique for stripping ornate places on pieces he was stripping. He mixed stripper and sawdust until it was about oatmeal consistency the used a toothbrush to work it into carved or edges. The sawdust acted like sand paper as the stripper softened the paint. Really worked well.

You should of put that wedge in the slot when the glue was still wet. It would have expanded the peg more and made it tighter.

You've done a Simply Stunning restoration! In the 50's my Godparents in Woodcliff Lake N.J. had a very similas stool at their Baby Grand. My sister & I took piano from Olive, and I loved (gently!) spinning on that beautiful stool. Wish I could find one here in Oregon to try to restore!!

That piano stool will last another 200 years. Outstanding job! I prefer a golden oak or a golden pecan stain; but, if your piano is dark, then your stool should match.

Всегда думала, что стул для фортепьяно должен быть без спинки: откинуть фалды фрака, разложить длинную юбку концертного платья... Старая мебель полна чудесных открытий.
@FurnitureFlippingForProfit

I never thought about that but you are right. The back itself does not serve much of a purpose since you do not sit back to play a piano. I guess it was just for "looks?"
The spindle that's cracked is going to break again
@FurnitureFlippingForProfit

None of the spindles were cracked. They just broke off at the joints where I repaired them with dowels. Dowels are the traditional way of repairing them after this damage.

@@FurnitureFlippingForProfit okay just looked it to me but I don't know what I was looking at now
Amazing. And yes, the sound of the piano has been recovered. I have a question…. In a few videos you needed to bleach some wood. In one video you used a commercial wood bleach solution and in another video you use a household 3:1 bleach mixture. Which solution do you recommend?
@FurnitureFlippingForProfit
Жыл бұрын
It is very hard to get the commercial wood bleach solution. I do not know why. I finally found it at menards and had to special order it (since we do not have menards where I live). Therefore, I usually use household bleach. I prefer the commercial wood bleaching solution! It works very quickly! Much faster than household bleach. Oxalic acid simply does NOT work as well as the other 2.
How did you restore the metal claw feet?
@FurnitureFlippingForProfit
Жыл бұрын
I tried to strip one of the metal feet but the paint did not come off. I used rub and buff on them in antique gold. Sorry but I forgot to add that to the video.
If you had left the paint remover on for 20 minutes would it had taken more off
@FurnitureFlippingForProfit

It was on most of the chair for at least 20-45 min. You will note that I applied it to the seat, leg, 1 spindle and back of the chair. After 15 min. I started to remove it from the seat. By the time I got to the back it had been on about 45 min. That is why I covered it with plastic- to keep if from drying out. Thanks for watching.
