Beautiful Alpine Lakes! || UTV Overlanding Idaho - The Final Day Part 6 [Polaris General 4]

The final day of our Idaho UTV Overlanding Adventure started with a pair of moose enjoying a fresh breakfast along the edge of the beautiful alpine lake where we camped. It wasn't a very long ride back to our truck and trailer, but we enjoyed some breathtaking views one final time, and discussed the trip.

    Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the sub! Idaho is a really neat state. Beautiful. We had passed through but this was really the first time we spent some time there. We loved it. Moose are Kim’s favorite animal and we don’t really have them here at home so she was pretty excited!

    I've taken 2 solo trips across the Arizona Strip of over 650 miles each in my side by side,with no cell service. I use the Spot satellite communication device to keep in touch with family in Ohio. It not only gives them a piece of mind, but if I ever need help it's only a push of a button away. I've also used the Enreach between the two the I think the Enreach is better, but that comes with a bigger price tag for both the device and the needed service contract. The overall end result is a piece of mind with both unites. Utah is waiting to great your family..Come on down!!

    We are planning to visit Utah this summer! I know there’s a ton of places to ride but we’re probably going to do Uinta-Wasatch-Cache NFs. I’ve camped there before and it was beautiful. Kim’s dad will be racing his Indian again this year at Bonneville Speedweek, so we’re planning one big trip to do some overlanding and then head over to Wendover. We’ve thought about doing Inreach. Our cells now have a satellite SOS, so we need to do more research on that. There are some remote area we’ve been to, so it’s something we’ve thought about. Appreciate the feedback on Spot vs Enreach. We’ll be taking a look before our trip.

    @@TheNorthwoodsFamily Good morning first thinlis your dad racing on the Bonneville salt flats? I was out there in that area last week on a UTV day ride. The Bonneville salt flats did not exist. There was a lake where the Bonneville salt flats are supposed to be. Currently the salt flats are under 3 feet of water. There are rumors floating around that the race will be cancelled. If I knew how to attach a photo to this message I would do so

    FYI, North Salmon ID desert area. I would think about going west out there possibly threw Deadwood Reservoir. Work your way up to warm lake, Then Yellow Pine, McCall area maybe visit there for day Ice Cream Alley. Possibly make Riggins ID. Just Food for Thought pretty much be west side Hwy 21.

    Thanks for the tip! Some motorcycle guys suggested Deadwood and Yellow Pine to us and we later saw a truck overlanding video done at the same time we were there and it looked really cool. We have to watch the highways if and when we go back. We apparently drove too far on some of them so we’ll have to see if we can get there on forest roads. Or hope Idaho changes that dumb law 🫤

    I’ll be doing Deadwood in couple weeks, there fire towers to see also. Pretty cool and quiet back there. Also once get to Yellow Pine you can jump on The BDR. But recommendations is to stay or check out McCall ID you could camp close to it. Anyways enjoy your SXS and greatness of Idaho

    I know you guys are police officers but I was wondering what weapon you would suggest taking when you're in the back country like that just in case animal attack. Thank you for your videos we're going to do South Dakota this year

    Depends where you go. 99% of the time, I carry a 9mm Glock. We had a 19 and a 43X on our SD and ID trips. We had bear spray in Idaho too but not SD. Wildlife is something I think about, but I'm more concerned with people. I was surprised researching the Idaho trip there aren't grizzlies in the Sawtooths, just black bears. When I've camped/hiked in grizzly country previously, I carried a 10mm pistol or a .44 mag and always bear spray. But Iet's face it, a pistol of any caliber isn't great for a charging grizz. South Dakota (Black Hills that is) does have black bears but they are very rare. There are LOTS of mountain lions - but only ONE documented attack on a human ever. They're relatively small, thin-skinned and are skiddish. They are not the man-killers like African cats, they stay away or stay hidden from humans as much as possible. So my advice, 9mm pistol. Glock 19 or something similar. SD is a permitless carry state now too which is nice when you're from out of state. As I said, I mind the wildlife, but it's the 2-legged predators that I'm more concerned about even in the backcountry.

    Question. Just bought a RZR General 4 1000. I am surprised at the level of engine noise driving in 2WD in H. How does your family adjust to it? Is it normal to have RPMs around 7 K when going 45mph?

  • @TheNorthwoodsFamily

    @TheNorthwoodsFamily

    Жыл бұрын

    Congrats on the purchase! Yes - they are noisy and at that speed high RPMs are normal as the CVT transmission doesn’t work the same way a car transmission does. You can make the ride a lot more enjoyable with a few accessories - I think these are must haves for family riding. 1) Replace the factory tires with some radial tires. We’ve been running a set of Cougars from a company called Falcon Ridge and we love them. Great on and off-road. Radials cut down the noise and vibration significantly - even on hard trails but especially on asphalt. You’ll feel a big handling improvement too so those higher speeds will feel a lot safer. It’s a night and day difference, you’ll be less fatigued just from reducing vibration. 2) Windshield. Cutting down the wind blasting through the cabin again cuts noise and makes the ride a lot more comfortable for the family. 3) Get an intercom / radio system. We have a system from UTV COM. It’s alright some ups and downs. There are Bluetooth systems too that hook up to ride command or Garmin tread or a radio - Rugged Radios is a place to look. They’re not cheap but it’s really the only way you can have a regular conversation with people in your machine without yelling. That’s my advice. It’ll feel like an entirely new machine if you do those three things. Don’t overlook the tires… a lot of people dismiss tires but they make a huge difference. This was one of our first videos, some more thoughts there: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c4amyMOqo7y3lqg.html

    What’s the comms system you use? Any pros/cons?

  • @TheNorthwoodsFamily

    @TheNorthwoodsFamily

    Жыл бұрын

    COMS4S from UTV COM. It’s a wired system - so it’s nice that we can adjust headset volume independently. It’s nice because we don’t have to worry about batteries, we just plug our helmets in. Has a good quality radio, can play music on our phones over it. It has an audio out jack so we can also have a line going to our video camera. I can take phone calls through my headset too. It mounted to our roof and was relatively easy to install out of the way without cutting into the dash. Downsides - the volume changes based on how many people are plugged in. Also being a wire connection if connections get dirty we get static and the audio cuts out. So they need to be cleaned occasionally with some contact cleaner. Not perfect but overall it’s a good system, and we’ve been pretty happy with it.

    Appreciate it! We messaged with a few Idaho LEOs after our trip who are fans and we discussed the five mile limit on ATV travel on certain highways, with certain speed limits, etc. We always research regs before we go but we had not seen that or read it correctly. It’s possible we unintentionally violated that at some point along the route 🤷‍♂️ When you’re exploring a new area, especially with how so many ATV/UTV regulations are still done at the county / town level, there’s always a risk you miss something. It would be nice to see more consistent regulations, I’m actually surprised given Idaho’s reputation as a “free state” they’d have a law like this restricting UTV travel based on an arbitrary distance.
