In this video I make techno music on "just" one drum machine - Elektron Digitakt.
A few days ago it got quite significant firmware update. Digitakt 1.30! I used a few new features from it in this video too. This sampler or a drum machine became an industry standard box to have for your Dawless Setup. Not only for Techno, but for any other type of electronic music.
For my taste the Elektron Workflow and the Sequencer both perfectly fit into the Minimal Techno Workflow for Dawless Techno Jam. They enable you to jam easily and also create final tracks at the end.
I ended up creating and recording 2 techno tracks from scratch at 135 bpm and they are good enough to share. Also I did some post processing of the final tracks in Ableton with Analog Heat and iZotope Ozone 9.
Both tracks are made with samples from Tech & Techno sample pack from Elektron.

🌍 Hello World! My name is Ihor.
This is my channel where I share my experiences, ideas, reviews and tutorials related to Electronic Music Production. I focus mostly on Techno and House music. In my Studio on my Music Production Desk you will find a variety of different gear like: digital and analog synth, eurorack modular, drum machine, sampler, effect, mixer, guitar pedal, MIDI controller. Also software: DAW, Ableton, VST, plugins.
I am myself an engineer and I am quite obsessed with the Music Technology and Sound Design. I like making music without a computer. I like playing Electronic Music Live with my Minimal Dawless Setup. I love Eurorack Modular Techno and always keen to talk about the modular workflow.
I strongly believe that nothing can be better than a good Dawless Techno Jam!
I watched all the Techno Tutorials on KZread! (I think)
📺 Thanks for watching! And have fun!
✌️ Peace.

    2 жыл бұрын

@@pixelatedbeatz it depends what kind of samples you are looking for. Not that long time ago I got Divine 909 sample pack from Elektron for 909 drums of course. And it became my favorite 909 pack. Also Slate Digital 808 and 909 packs are super good quality. This when it comes to drums. For more melodic stuff I am usually “splicing” for some good stuff and them might gram an entire pack. Also! Samplestar Essential One Shot collection (not sure if this is exact pack name, but for sure something like that) is a great one for both drums and melodic stuff.

Whenever I heard music on Elektron machines it always sounds. very similar. Not sure. if it is because of the sound it produces. or something else. While the trax. here are cool, they sound very typical Elektron to me, am I wrong, or maybe these machines are just not for me and I am more oldschool?

@@AnalogFlava I can agree with you. Especially if one doesn’t go deeper with the sequencer. It’s programming that makes it recognizable, I think. Not the sound. Rhythms maybe. I am curious to hear from you what was/is your “old school” way?

@@IhorMedia Glad to hear you agree - so it is not just me and MY ears :) Well...I am not sure though how it could be programming > I know it/electron machines has a lot of cool "glitchy" features and Fx and sample. mangling/manipulation on the fly, which you also show a bit. But for me I think I just prefer the sound of older machines. Roland especially, for example the MC505, which is much more limited lets say, also it has no sampler, but it seems less cold and digital too me even if it is also based on samples/pcm waveforms.

Hi! Well, there was some little soft transience in the sample which I didn't want to loose. I liked the fact that the sample doesn't start so sharp. Thank Alex! I really appreciate your kind words! ✌️ Regarding the walkthrough I kinda do it in this video! I just cut some boring parts of a longer video, but the whole process is more or less there. The only thing I do outside of this video is the post processing of the final tracks. Basically these takes that I play at the end of each track. I take this parts into Ableton and run them through a Glue Compressor, Analog Heat Saturation and Ozone 9 mastering. I think this is what makes them sound like "a finished track". Also when I play I add +3dB in volume, since there is no voice to fight against and there is a room for a better listening experience. Hope that makes sense. Feel free to ask any more specific question regarding this performance. More than happy to answer!

@@IhorMedia So many thx for getting back to me Ihor... Well, what I meant (and sorry I did'nt express myself properly) was: it sounds like a finished track in terms of arrangement, though obviously you are improvising... I'm a total beginner in Techno and I've been trying to find advise on what is the thinking process when performing all these sounds together. I understand that first you put sounds together in a kind of pack (pattern). But then, when it comes to performing, what do you do to make it sound so good?... While performing, are you just randomly applying FX, muting and unmuting sounds here and there, or what is it that people do so it makes sense? Are you thinking about dynamics while performing? I mean, I can totally see what you are doing on the video, but I don't quite get it... I hope to have explained myself better. Sorry if I ask to basic questions. Most appreciate it!

@@alexfr811 these are not "basic" questions tho. Quite relevant! So first yes, I do some kind of a pattern. Then I try to play it. Hear with my ears and brain what makes sense, what not. I don't think that much about dynamics. Not intentionally at least. But there will always be some kind of structure. Most Techno tracks will be something like: Intro => Buildup => Drop => Break => Drop => Break => Break down => Outro. Then you have to practice playing these parts. And there are many techniques to play. For the DT most common would be: pattern change, mute/unmute, mixer page, effects, filter cutoff, track + anything (that changes this param on all the tracks simultaneously), fills, etc. I don't think I do anything randomly, but rather with intention. Hope that makes sense. But honestly, it is all about practicing this. I'd recommend you to start with pattern change. Make one full busy pattern. Then copy paste it over 8 patterns. Then go and remove something in first one, remove something else in second one, change something yet else in the third one. Then play them one after another and listen to carefully. Think if you like this transition or not. Then try other techniques. For example if you have a kick drum + bassline going, unmuting an open hihat always works, it kinda speeds up the whole thing. Then unmuting clap. And so on. Another recommendation would be to listen to music actively. Try to listen to some tracks and break them down: there goes intro, here goes drop, there goes break. Try to understand what transitions people make. What do they add? How they do it? When? What they remove? How? When? You could also try to understand the "Why?", but this one is quite tough and subjective. But will be helpful. And practice, practice, practice. At the end you are playing an instrument. Yes, I see the DT as an instrument. You get better with time spent on practice. At least this is how I do it! You gave me ab idea for a video tho... seems like I can talk about this for a while.

@@IhorMedia right on!!... Exactly that was my question about... And I would loooove to see a video on that pls!... If you do make it, would pls focus on live performances?... There are tons of tutorials on arrangement from the perspective of a producer, but haven't been able to find anything on the thinking process of arranging and performing live, except for a couple of videos with Saytek where he says he doesn't arrange anything. Basically, he says that he puts a few loops together and then he drops them whenever he feels it right, however, he doesn't elaborate on that and honestly I think there's so much more involved in that process of playing live. As a drummer I've played jazz for years, but here the improvisational process doesn't seem to work the same way, does it? 🤔

Hi Ihor Ace demo again, Digitakt arrived today so lots to learn, still seems complex but be giving it a go I’m going to Midi out to Polyend poly2 Midi in but am confused as will normal tracks 1-8 info still be sent via midi or is it only being sent if using tracks 9-16 ???? your advice will be most appreciated my friend Looking forward to future demos👍👍🆒🎶🎶🎶

Hey Martin! Congrats with your new box! I am sure DT will find its place in your setup. Your are right, tracks 1-8 can send and receive MIDI. I am not sure how it set by default in yours, but I usually disable that by going into Settings -> MIDI -> Channels and disabling all the channels for tracks and whatnot. With these disabled your Sound tracks won’t send or receive any MIDI. Wish you good time with learning it! It is so fun! Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions! ✌️

@@IhorMedia hi you said I could ask you anything from our last communication so here gps DIGITAKT Nothing in manual mentions how to open New Project?? What is the button protocol for this??? Also if I practice on factory default project is this ok as don’t want to erase stuff unknowingly???lots to melt the brain Can the Digitakt Midi out using DT sequencer sequence Modules via Polyend Poly2?? Also lastly thinking of getting Quadratt 1U. Mixer to attenuate stuff can this output direct into main mixer which is Mackie Pro FX 12 , worried about hot VC levels?? @@martintaylor9205 Hey Martin! My advice to you will be not to rush too much! Take it easy and slowly. It takes time to figure all the little things around! And now let me try to answer your questions. Q: how to open New Project?? A: User Manual 15.1.1 LOAD PROJECT Q: Can the DT sequencer sequence Modules via Polyend Poly2? A: Off course it can! The DT MIDI sequencer is really good and flexible! Tracks 9-16 are dedicated to that. You can read more about it in the User Manual 12. MIDI TRACK PARAMETERS. Q: About the hot Eurorack levels and a mixer A: Well, it is all a matter of numbers. Mackie Pro can handle up to +22dBu on all inputs before it starts clipping. Which is quite a lot even for Eurorack signal. However as the best practice I wouldd still recommend having a mixer or an output module like Stereo Line Out 1U from intellijel or similar. This will give you more hands on control on the levels on the Modular system itself, which it quite handy.

do you prefer the analog rytm mkii or the digitakt taking the price out of the equation?

  • @IhorMedia

    @IhorMedia

It depends. Digitakt is better in some ways. For example I like that it has 2 filters per track, 8 MIDI tracks and the fact that I can connect 2 mono synth to it and split inputs as 2 independent. Also Digitakt is great from my KZread videos. It is small and straightforward. Rytm is a drum synth first of all. Hence I approach it as a sound design tool. Also Rytm gives much more performance tools. In a nutshell if I had to choose one taking the price out of the equation - it would be the DT.
