Do you know how to make electronic music? In this video I am making a track from start to finish on the Digitakt, using factory samples only. No Techno this time, rather Downtempo. Final take was processed in Ableton with Analog Heat and Ozone 9.

🌍 Hello World! My name is Ihor.
This is my channel where I share my experiences, ideas, reviews and tutorials related to Electronic Music Production. I focus mostly on Techno and House music. In my Studio on my Music Production Desk you will find a variety of different gear like: digital and analog synth, eurorack modular, drum machine, sampler, effect, mixer, guitar pedal, MIDI controller. Also software: DAW, Ableton, VST, plugins.
I am myself an engineer and I am quite obsessed with the Music Technology and Sound Design. I like making music without a computer. I like playing Electronic Music Live with my Minimal Dawless Setup. I love Eurorack Modular Techno and always keen to talk about the modular workflow.
I strongly believe that nothing can be better than a good Dawless Techno Jam!
I watched all the Techno Tutorials on KZread! (I think)
📺 Thanks for watching! And have fun!
✌️ Peace.

    No shit man. I'd describe myself as pretty accustomed to the Digitakt and its workflow, given it was my first hardware toy about 4 years ago. But I have never even remotely considered to peak into the Factory sample folder.. Who would've thought that there is more than those standard 8 samples in a freshly initialized patch! Thanks Ihor!

    Disabling the FX send for the kick track is such a great tip. I had done the parameter lock trick to avoid this for control-all situations, but it’s quite tedious. I like this approach a lot more, thanks! For other folks in the comments: another Digi-box trick is to disable the track from going to the main outs and only send it to FX. Example might be something like only wanting to hear a 100% wet reverb.

    Disabling track from going into main and then feeding it into FX is just great tip too! Thanks! I think I used such a method to create techno rumble samples. Exclude kick from main and send it into reverb and delay with lowpass filter on both. Then resample that, tweak here and there and there is techno rumble! Done!

    @@martintaylor9205 saving the project is not that necessary, actually. While you are working on it, even if you turn the DT off, it preserves the current project. I usually prefer to save them anyways. It works like a safety net for me. For example before playing a track to record it, I'd go and check everything around, then save the project. Now I can mess up without feeling pressure to destroy something. Since I can just reload the whole thing back to where I saved it.

    You're Digitakt tutorials are the most engaging and inspiring that I've seen, looking forward to more! Just curious if you like to use external reverb on the Digitakt for a finished track? I use the Eventide Space, and it sounds great, but the way you are using the internal reverb here is more creative, and I'm wondering if this aspect of having creative control over the amount of reverb on each sound might outweigh the benefit of using a lush external reverb across everything...or do you use both?

  • @IhorMedia

    @IhorMedia

    2 жыл бұрын

    It all depends, I guess. Usually I don't use external reverb with the DT. I really love the internal one, that is send per track and it is much more flexible, than having a reverb on the master. However I can think of many use cases for it! One of which might be building tension before drop, or creating some additional textures and whatnot. I need to try that out I think! Thanks for watching and for your kind words! I appreciate you!

  • @soundofmai

    @soundofmai

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@IhorMedia I see, yes the internal DT reverb does sound very good, and I'm really feeling like I'm missing out on flexibility and creativity by not using it since watching your videos. I mainly use an external reverb because I have other instruments such as Analog Rytm and SP-404 in my performance setup, so I'm trying to achieve a cohesive sound by using the same reverb on all. What I might try is using the DT internal reverb and also send just a small amount of DT signal to the Eventide Space for that cohesiveness (I lower the low frequencies on the Space so it doesn't affect the kick). Thanks for your feedback!

  • @IhorMedia

    So, the effects are global. This means that they are not per track and when changing their params, you make that globally. Per track you have send functionality. You can send track audio into the Reverb and/or Delay with different amounts.

    Thank you! Mostly improvisation. I might have a little idea before hand, but implementing it is just a creative flow. "Improvisationell" - sounds legit to me haha.

    @@IhorMedia hey and good morning to amsterdam ☺ that answer is much appreciated! i think in the "techno from mars"video u complained about that function of the octatrack. if u mute a channel the whole sound is gone, no tail of any fx or anything is leftover. as u figured out it is because the track, in this case, is a "soundengine" and it only can be on or off are u able to route the tracks in a different way within that machine? if so u could create send fx tracks . . .

  • @IhorMedia

    @IhorMedia

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@sklandarok you are right, the mutes on the OT mute the whole audio track engine, and since effects are part of this track, they mute too. On the Digitakt however it is not the case, since effects are master effects and you essentially send audio from tracks to it. Hence when you mute track, the tails are going to be there. People in the comments suggested some interesting and great workarounds. Which might work. Tho that adds complexity. And I don't like anything complex when I am making music.

  • @IhorMedia

    @IhorMedia

    2 жыл бұрын

    Gonna copy/paste from another answer: It depends. Digitakt is better in some ways. For example I like that it has 2 filters per track, 8 MIDI tracks and the fact that I can connect 2 mono synth to it and split inputs as 2 independent. Also Digitakt is great from my KZread videos. It is small and straightforward. Rytm is a drum synth first of all. Hence I approach it as a sound design tool. Also Rytm gives much more performance tools. In a nutshell if I had to choose one taking the price out of the equation - it would be the DT.
