Hi sir, could you please solve the tricky question below as well. The first three terms of a geometric series are (p) , (p^2) , (p^2 +4) (a) Show that the only possible real value of p is 2.

Since it's a geometric the ratio r = p²/p = p²+4/ p² Then cross multiply and rearrange to get p⁴-p³-4p= 0 p(p³-p²-4) =0 then Let f(x) = p³ -p²-4 then by factor theorem f(2) =0 so (p-2) is a factor then perform long division to find the quadratic quotient u will then end up with p(p-2)(p²+p+2) =0 since it's a geometric p cannot equal 0 and the the quadratic has a discriminant of less than 0 so it has no real values of p (or u can use ur calculator) so the only value of p is 2
Great video. This question isn't really all that tricky it just takes a long time to do, but all the ideas used in this question are either GCSE level or you can copy straight off the formula book.
