Not to panic. BBC bosses learned that the photo was only suitable for closedown that Christmas with the anthem due to the toys ident on BBC1 that year being considered "too jolly" for use at closedown. I personally feel that they should've used the Virtual LaserDisc Globe, which I think the regions of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland did.

I think the reason why they show a photo of Queen Elizabeth is because the 1992 Christmas ident from BBC1 was ill-suited for the closedown where the national anthem sounds. BBC deemed it was too jolly to use that alongside the anthem.

Yet, they used the 1986 Christmas Ident at closedown in 1986, even though that one was very jolly also.

@@mango4606 BBC1 didn't use the 1994 Christmas idents at closedown, but unlike 1992, they played the regular ident.
That image of the Queen is rather un-settling! They should've just used the virtual globe (or 'orb' as I call it) if they didn't want to show the christmas ident.

I think it might have taken some time to wire up the videodisc player used for the regular ident, for the Christmas period whatever was playing these idents was wired up.

Some ITV announcers also did that, particularly at Tyne Tees.
The picture of Queen Elizabeth II probably scared a few people before the anthem ended for 25th December 1992. It's kinda scary that the BBC did that to annoy people.

traeyboy529 I know why they do this. It's because not to annoy people. It's because the BBC 1 1992 Christmas ident was too jolly for the national anthem in closedown. So, they have to use that portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. And that's why the BBC put it.
@traeyboy529

I only stated that as people MIGHT of got a bit annoyed with that image instead of the 1992 Christmas ident .
I'm guessing they used that portrait of the queen for all their slides going into her Christmas speech on both BBC1 and BBC2

Someone should make an edit of this: When the photo of the Queen is shown, the screen slowly zooms into her face. The audio gradually gets louder and the picture starts getting red and shaky. Is this a bad idea?
