You mean they close down for 3 hours. In America they have reruns playing in the middle of the night.

The BBC stopped the practice in November 1997. Until then the staff required to transmit throughout the night demanded overtime pay, which was expensive and seen as wasteful, as the number of eyeballs watching during the night would not have justified the cost.

The last time the BBC closed down was the 8th of November 1997. Replacing the off-air time with BBC News. BBC Two and CBBC still close down

Yes until 1997 the BBC closed down each night. ITV the commercial station was the first UK station to go 24 hours in 1988. Channel 4 would stay open as late as 3.00am most nights until they went 24 hours in around 1997 also.

What movie was playing at the end? BTW this is some good quality video and sound you've got here. BTW I live in the US so I am used to NTSC and MTS Stereo. Not PAL and NICAM Stereo.

I can't remember. Thank you, I only use those late 1980s JVC decks (best VCRs ever made, IMO. people rave on about early 90s Panasonics, but late 80s JVC decks just top them for me!) I don't know if MTS stereo was digital, but NICAM certainly was - Near Instantaneous Companded Audio Multiplex - NICAM for short. Pity that it couldn't be incorporated into digital terrestrial broadcasts as it was *very* bandwidth hungry, IIRC!

@@aidanlunn7441 MTS is pure analogue, just like FM Stereo. While NICAM is a digital audio codec using lossy audio compression based on u-law ADPCM due to bandwidth constraints.

Hang on, I think I understand now. I split my original channel into two Google accounts about 3 years ago, so that the videos would appear on a channel not under my own name. Sticky Tape ‘n’ Rust (previously called Ferguson Videostar) is my original KZread channel just renamed when I split it into two. When you do as I did, KZread assigns the username of any comments the account holder has previously made to the name of the second account. So when I created a second account by splitting this one, I used the opportunity to re-name my original account to FV then to ST’n’R while keeping my original account name (my own name) for the second account. I did it because I also use gmail for my email address, KZread is owned by Google and the accounts are really Google+ accounts. If I kept my account as it was, then my real name would be attached to this YT account and potential employers could have found my YT channel, which I didn’t want them to do. Splitting the account allowed me to keep the videos up on an account not in my own name and at the same time keep my existing email account.
