BBC1 - Closedown, Tuesday 14th January 1992

Ойын-сауық

From a cold winters evening and a change to the advertised schedules because of the FA Cup, which meant an unscheduled Match of the Day appearing instead of the film Compromising Positions. Des Lynam bids us goodnight before Richard Straker signs off BBC1 for the night, a bit earlier than expected. Don’t forget to leave the lights on if the PIF is anything to by. Pre-Midnight closedowns were rare, if not on the way out by this time.

"Party Information Film" was just part of it, apparently. Richard Straker must have been pretty sleepy. I wouldn't mind but it's not even midnight. Smortsnight,

I liked this version of the BBC 1 globe. A nice nod to the previous few globes, updated with 90s flair.

Yes indeed it was too, at least of course until they introduced the much loved (and missed too) balloons in October 1997, when the rebranding meant that BBC1 then became BBC ONE and BBC2 became BBC TWO at the same time. But thank you anyway of course!!

I remember a rather early closedown sometime in January or February 1994. It was a Sunday night, and it was listed in the Radio Times as 11.35-11.40pm Weather, followed of course by Closedown. I think indeed, that this was one of the very last finishes before Midnight. After that, BBC1 introduced a late film seven nights a week, and Closedown was much later than before I believe.

Well yes of course as I said here before 11 years ago! I am sure that time in early 1994 on a Sunday night on BBC1 (it may even have been in March but am not too sure) was the last closedown before midnight. BBC1 did indeed then continue after midnight from then on until November 1997 of course until it went fully 24 hours with BBC News 24. Indeed, I think the very last closedown (it may even be here on You Tube but am not too sure) was at 3.00am, because I am sure the announcer person at the time said that 'from tomorrow night onwards we are going 24 hours so this is the very last closedown'. Thank you anyway-well done!!

@Bruce Danton Well technically you're wrong, BBC One still closes down at night as announcers bid viewers good night, then it hands over transmitters to the BBC News Channel, apart from General Election coverage and olympics coverage, BBC One has never broadcaster 24 hours a day seven days a week, because to say if BBC One was broadcasting 24 hours then they would have repeats like Eastenders at 2am. Casualty at 3am and Homes Under the Hammer at 4am.

@@meridian2000 Thank you for that. You are so right really of course somehow. BBC1 does indeed at night-time go to the BBC News Channel, so indeed they do closedown. Although the time they do can vary a lot depending on what has been shown before that. It is mostly after 12 Midnight, not before that though. Sometimes it is as late as 2.15am, but mostly before that. A glance in the Radio Times will show you that. Also I guess too, BBC2 still does too, after the Sign Zone series that used to be the Learning Zone before that I guess. Really I guess channels do not all have to be on all the time do they? Although ITV, Channels 4 and 5 as well as some others do, some don't. Thank you anyway!!

Actually, it was still considered early at that time. It was not uncommon for TV channels to conclude their transmission way earlier. For Belgium, it was still the case up until 1997. Closing down as early as 11:20pm. For the BBC's case, closing down early wasn't something new and it wasn't the first time they closed down this early. In November 1991, the channel closed down at 11:48pm after the conclusion of the concert special from Neil Sedaka. So that's why BBC One had to close down early, on a few factors. Saving the energy and the broadcaster a handful of money to prevent overtime.

I agree!! The worst offender is kids TV. When I was little CBBC showed "Maid Marian and her Merry Men", a great series with wonderful theme music. When they repeated it a few years back the presenters talked over it which drew complaints, so they ran a thing where kids would call in and sing (badly) over the top of it!! Why couldn't they leave the credits alone?!

Well on BBC1 they did until they went 24 hours in November 1997 as far as I know; whilst BBC2 I don't think ever did play the national anthem, presumably because it was felt that as BBC1 did then BBC2 at the time would not do so, and nor of course do they do so now then either. Thank you anyway!!
