    Great tour, you have shown almost all important on this nice yacht. Just to let you know, Bavaria C45, C50, C57 and C57 were designed in the cooperation of Cosutti yacht design and Pulse yacht design, they did a lot of sailing yachts together, Some Salonas, Swans...Cosutti is responsable for naval architecture and Pulse for interior design and engineering, so Cosutti is what you see from outside, hull, deck, keel, rudder, sails and Pulse all you see and do not see from inside, interiors, structure, recievers, engineering...I had a privilege to work with them, great guys.

    Clearly you have the financial ability to own a very nice, large, well equiped and new sailing yacht. A lot of sailing channels I watch, it seems they are spending a lot of time fixing everything on smaller and older boats. The constant fixing of problems while at sea would be a concern of mine. Hope to see you two that the Miami boat show in 2022.

    Can I make a safety suggestion ?? now that I've watched through the whole video , I saw at the end where you showed the 2 pkgs of emergency bungs under the nav station seat , you might want to take a lesson from Zingaro James whose boat just recently "almost" sank , and take those bungs out of the packaging and place the right sized one next to each and every through hole you have on the boat ** then secure each to something close to the through hole with a wire , so if there is a valve failure it doesn't float off , then the bung is right there and ready to jam in the hole !! that way you don't loose time having to run back to the nav station to grab one and then run back to the breach , could mean a lot less water in the boat ! ? stay safe

    Thank you Badcat, sometimes it does help to be reminded.. Yes we know James Zingaro very well and know his situation that happened recently. I think taking them out of the bags might be the first step you are right, I think in order to wire the bungs next to the through holes, we need to buy more bungs otherwise if nothing to do with a through hole fitting we will also be running round trying to find an appropriately sized bung..

    Bedroom = cabin, back of the boat = stern, front of the boat = bow , rope is a line unless attached to a sail then it’s a sheet, and grab bags are usually ditch bags but now I feel bad - and yes the anchor is important 😂

    I’m sure that this question will stir up a hornet’s nest of comments, but here goes...I loved your tour video. My wife and I have a retirement goal very similar to what you are doing now. We want to do a factory pick up, cruise the Med, do the ARC, cruise the Caribbean and complete a circumnavigation before returning home to BC and cruising local waters. The Bavaria C57 is also at the top of my monohull list, along side the Hanse 588. I also want to add the Williams, just like you have done. So here come the questions. I hear so many say that a monohull for a full time couple is exhausting and the cruising on a heel quickly becomes old. Additionally, there are complaints about motion when moored. Having said that, the equivalent living space and style in a cat would be a 50’ at a significantly higher price. So I was wondering how you feel about these comments and what your experience has been? In another note, I love the Williams tender but have heard comments that, because of it’s weight, you might get caught on a beach with the tide having gone down, an you are unable to drag it to the water. Do you have any thoughts on that? Finally, do you ever feel that having the galley and saloon below deck negatively impacts your experience to a significant degree or does the Bavaria design overcome these concerns? Thanks so much for your help.

  • @SailingAequus

    @SailingAequus

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Dave, I certainly wouldn't rule out a cat if we were to buy another boat in the future but as you say it would be a lot more money for the equivalent size. In my opinion there is no such thing as the perfect boat. Every boat has some sort of compromise. Questions I think you should ask yourself (other than budget!) are... What percentage of time will i actually be sailing on a passage vs at anchor or in a marina? Most people spend way more time at anchor then they do making long passages so its probably more important to be on a boat that's comfortable and has some nice socialising space. Both the C57 and the 588 would be perfect as would most cats. With regards to heeling Philippa does not enjoy it so much when the boat heels and you do have to make sure everything is stowed. But the heeling does mean you can sail upwind better than most cats. Having said that though if you are following the trade winds then the wind will be behind you most of the time so maybe this is not so much of an issue. A cat is more stable when at anchor but most of the time we are very comfortable especially in the Caribbean where the wind and swell come from a constant direction most of the time. Having the saloon and galley below has never really been an issue for us and it also means people can't see directly in when walking or sailing past although I do see that the layout on cats is probably very nice having everting on one level. I absolutely love my Willams Minijet! You would need 2 people to drag it up or down a beach but I usually use the anchor in shallow water rather than beaching it. The other big pro with the Willams is that there is no outboard engine to worry about being stolen. Support from Willams is excellent but you will need to carry spares as the nearest dealer in the Caribbean is in Florida. Servicing will also be an issue when you leave the Med but its fairly easy to do oil and filter changes yourself. Hope this helps.

    Regarding the ability of sailing vessels to sail into the wind, The one time you will curse the cats lack of ability to point as against the monohull is when you are trying to tack into a seaway or heavy swell, possibly away from danger. The mono will be making progress, the cat not so much. I have owned both and after the cat I have gone back to a mono albeit older generation but still valid I think.

    1PAHero Might I suggest a water barrier blanket. That can deep be deployed over larger breaches through the Hull than a bung can plug. Say for instance if you hit an iceberg or a floating container. I didn’t hear any mention of a Storm Drogue/ Sea Anchor. And there’s these nifty little things that you can suspend from your boom over the side, while on a mooring ball. To reduce rocking. I wonder if there’s anyway to quiet the water slapping at the bottom of the dive platform?? Just discovered your channel and really appreciate that the two of you have very little previous experience, and now are crossing oceans on the 57 footer! Awesome!!!

    The slapping we don't really mid at all, it is actually lovely to hear the water and I don't think I have ever mentioned it nor James, I am also conscious of these things but never given it a thought until you just mentioned it.. it might sound more on camera! We really don't need anything to stop rocking, we very rarely rock to any degree, occasionally we might but it isn't enough to warrant dealing with it. Thank you for your comments and for being here 1PAHero

    I'll look into the water blanket as that sounds like a really useful thing to have onboard. Thabks for the tip! As for drogues or sea anchors we don't have one. I know it's a bit of a controversial topic because of the forces these things generate and the issues in deployment/retrieval. I watched an interview with Skip Novak a while ago and he was pretty anti them.

    Literally not a boat, but a floating iPhone) And if the electronics fail, then how will you turn on the pumps in case of an emergency? Isn’t the old system better with conventional and simple switches? Friends in bavaria 45 had a failure even of the old circuit breaker system at Atlantic ocean. But there you can at least turn on or off something directly. And in this case, how can you act in an extreme case? In no case think that I wish you an emergency) Seven feet under the keel)

    Bavaria definitely offers more interior space than any other boat with the same length. I actually have a Beneteau 41.1 and want to upgrade to a 50 footer. The Bavaria C50 (Vs. the Beneteau 51.1) has an amazing volume inside and furthermore dinghy garage but everybody is saying me that the quality, the reliability and the after sales service of Bavaria is not so good as the one of Beneteau (I must say I am very happy in this sense with Beneteau). What can you tell me about your experience with Bavaria? Would you buy again another Bavaria? Thanks and wish you greatest adventures!

    Generally a nice boat, but like many other modern med-oriented models it has a very angular interior. Apart from taste, which is of course a variable personal thing, the problem is all those relatively sharp edges & corners that are a puncture- and bruise-hazard in heavy weather.
