I love Battletech, but now that I'm older and have a little bit of experience in how machines work, I have to recognize that so many of the original designs are ludicrously under-engineered. The new versions of these machines aren't as iconic, but they look like they'd actually work.

Looks like they would actually work. The problem is your applying a hydraulic type system to the imagined world of molymar fiber Steel which contracts upto 50% its length when electricity is applied. So the original mechs were humanoid in appearance because the molymar fibers were bundled together and applied like like muscle to a skeleton. With that in mind the only area that would probably not work would be the knee and elbow joints. Which are often drawn as pin and hinge system. But hey its 1980s sci-fi. At least they got FTL travel a little closer to reality than Star wars Startrek

@@dalesheen1816 Mechs don't really have much practical use. Profile way too large, bipedal movement has essentially no advantages for a machine (humans are only bipedal because it's efficient over long distances). We'll never develop mechs for warfare like you see in anime or battletech. Powered armor does make sense and will be more widely used once the battery situation is solved, although they'd be mainly for purposes other than warfare (construction, emergency response, so cops can choke people to death more efficiently, etc.).

@@BigMikeMcBastard nice use of an unfounded myth about police. Almost like big city police are over worked, stressed out all the time, and under funded leading to poor training and a lack of an ability to replace older experienced officers when something like that happens leading to stations protecting those officers not wanting to lose their experience. Yep clearly the answer to all of these issues is to defund the police and further make their jobs harder leading to more screw ups. You do realize their people to. ((And in the case that was a sarcastic joke and you weren’t serious…. Uh… I’d like to apologize before the comment war starts))

your thinking of daikatana and the terrible production of it. Story goes, john romero fired all the dialoge and recording guys and hired a new team. During a meeting the writers were talking about dialoge with the voice actors and John and they kept on saying Kage "cage" and John kept on laughing and they looked at him and asked why, 3 months into voice recording with the new team NO ONE told them it was KaGay which was John's own personal sounding of the word he never told any of the new sound and voice team.

I have loved BattleTech for over 30 years, and still do. I realize that power armor is far more likely to be effective and functional than a 'Mech, but the cool factor... Though I think Living Steel got the concept of 'Mechs right. Not only is there a ground pressure issue, but in the words of one of the Moritori pilots: "Do you get a good view of the battlefield from 30 feet up? Oh, certainly... You also give the other guy an even better view." In the Living Steel universe, the Moritori was an experiment that is, essentially, a humanoid BattleMech. Also, Sylph (sill-f), not Slyph (sl-if).

That would cost too much, and no one would have the sense to think a pilot is worth enough to keep them combat effective. Even after a Mech is shot down to military "planners," pilots are a dime a dozen and literal cannonfodder. They say nice things to keep the pilots happy but to do anything that would make them more deadly. HAH! Riiiight. Maybe some Clan may try it, but due to their rather asinine honor system. Some Clan would complain, and some shit would happen. The whole project would be scrapped. Plus, the way Clanners wage war. It is unlikely they would even use the tech in battle or even in their honor duels. So still be a waste. As much as it would be a cool concept. Just have to have the mindset of the universe. And come to realize, building tanks would be cheaper and more cost-effective. Than, building a single mech that could attempt to carry the same firepower. All because I am still trying to figure out how mechs can have better armor over a TACKED vehicle. To which a tracked vehicle could have better armor and even better weapons, but no...it's because plot and the title of the universe setting.

thx that was a very interessting vid, didnt think the Battle armor lore would be this indepth, tho should have figured since its BT afterall lol. at 24:22 i guess u had a sort of brainfart there, the text is somewhat missing a part (or u tryded to say something that went under, idk.) the last line in the first Paragraph doesnt make sense the way it is there: "Due to its recon role in DEST, the experimental Battle Armor C3 System" the system what? some form of addendum would be nice, maybe as a pinned comment or something.
