I heard rumors of streaming loading maps for any effective size you want. but then knowing the source engine, I envision a worst case scenario of map-to-map loading barriers totally separating player interaction across them anyway, making it only a small upgrade over what we already have.

Describing it that way, wouldn't that essentially be the same technique as the aforementioned Go4TheKill gamemode? I couldn't imagine valve downgrading to that level considering how much of an advanced engine they're marketing it to be.

In Garry's mod there was an addon made by I think a single guy that was mainly meant as a localized gravity modifier, so you could set the side of a prop to have gravity going sideways into it, and you could jump onto it seamlessly. The creator said it worked by creating a seperate "map" with whatever surface of that prop set to the ground, and then it would sort of load it into the middle of the actual map you were playing on. They also said this meant you could have infinite (but repeating) maps, and demonstrated with an infinitely wide/deep flatgrass pit map. I'm vastly oversimplifying and don't really understand myself, but it was very clever, and I'm sure that Valve could use something like that or the technique used in Go4TheKill to make it easy to make very large maps. Or I guess they could just make Artifact 2

Uncle dane made a video 8 months ago where he measured the size of tf2 maps in hammer units by calculating the size of the actual playable area. It seemed really complicated but since both cs go and tf2 are source games the methods could probably work in cs go too. Ok ran across Altis with the Stamina Simulation disabled and on 4x Game Speed and got 21 Minutes. If we now take that 21 Minutes and multiply it by 4 we have the time we would need on a Server which is 1 Hour and 24 Minutes... with the Stamina Simulation disabled!! Since 90% of Servers (that i play on) have Stamina Simulation enabled it would probally more than 2 Hours... damn

The video states that de_dust 2 0.01 km^2 or 10000 m^2 and since 10000/8.5 is approx. 11765, roughly 11765 Toyota Corollas can fit into de_dust2 . (6:51) Also there appears to be an error as 0.01 km is 10 meters.

Was waiting for you to mention Arma. I remember when I started the game and, after doing a couple of missions, dropped myself onto Stratis to roam. Wondered how long it would take to get from town A to B. They didn't even look that far, on the SMALL map in the game (though now that's Malden). Shit took me so long I ended up just quitting and spawning a car. Also, PlanetSide 2 would have been worth mentioning. It's about 8km x 8km per map, so about the size as PUBG. But those maps are all land (or traversable water, like rivers).

I think comparing size with respect to running speed would be interesting. Other battle royale maps with counter strikes lack of sprint would make them feel much larger.

Nice one! CS:GO maps comparison against the former and beta Counter-Strike maps might be interesting. I really curious how it compares against the likes of Survivor, Cstle, Prison, Railroad, or other big old maps.

Oooh can you please do more map history and in-depth like the cbble part? Showing changes and versions over time, info about the mapper who made then and all the tech stuff like size and implementation details. OMGOMGOMG

The thing I always appreciated about Counter Strike maps versus sprawling open-world maps is how dense and memorable locations feel. Large sprawling maps always tend to feel "samey" to me

Uncle Dane found a way to find all the playable space in TF2 on a map, I assume it would work for CS:GO.

They use similar engines, but they are not the same, so I don't know if Hammer Units, which are both what Uncle Dane used, as well as what Source Map Creators like myself use to calculate size of the full map as well as specific tracking for the playable area, are also used in CS:GO because it doesn't use Source/Source 2, and sadly multi-game comparisons like what he did in the video would be completely impossible. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Call it "X" and "Y" if you ever do this again for the width and whatever that other thing would be :)

Uncle Dane had a great video on measuring Map size by using Navmesh in hammer.

I think the reason why canals seems more open than the radio court is because it’s not walled off, well kinda, but I’m talking about physical walls you can see and not the invisible walls

the bigger the map, the longer a match drags out without actual gameplay. Ive honestly been wondering why BR games dont have vastly different maps sizes with different player counts to at least give some variety, but i variety isnt really those games strength. I feel like for as casual a mode BR is with random drops, Danger Zones size is perfect. Just big enough to support the mode to last a couple of minutes.

@@sprya7558 Its not more gameplay though. Its just more downtime. In most BR games you might have intense action in beginning and end, but between that there is mostly running around. Thats not a well designed gameplay loop, its gameplay pausing.

@@ruijikisu as I said. I don't know why I like it but usually it feels calming and them it suddenly jumps into action and I guess I like that sudden jump. Obviously if it's just something repetitive and there is nothing to do/see then that gets extremely boring. But I never really experience that and it's probably because I play with friends most of the time

Philip, you should try to make a video trying to find the biggest CS:GO map but not by area, but using the playable space. Uncle Dane made it for TF2 using the bot nav_mesh and other tools, those might work for CS too since is the same engine

There is a way to measure actual map sizes with a navmesh that takes into consideration any "walkable" area "intended by the devs" (yes, it will even count mutiple floors, like vertigo). You can get the result in Hu^2, the master unit of source engine, what GabeN uses to boil his tea. This is how you do it: open a map with sv_cheats 1 nav_generate (if you don't already have a navmesh) nav_edit 1 nav_flood_select (this selects every connected navmesh tile that are accessible from one-another (not perfect, but close enough, it also detects jumps most of the time; It will also output the number of tiles selected in console (that is useless, since tiles are differently sized)) nav_chop_selected (this chops any selected navmesh tiles into equal squares, and will output the number of tiles again. If you figure out how big one of those squares is (in tf2 it's 24Hu*24Hu), then you got your answer in Hu^2) credit: 14bit

It is missing that typical CS:GO vibe you normally get when playing one of the other modes. Yet it doesn't give the same vibe as a true battle royale game either, making it rather lacking.

I think there is a nav mesh command in source that "floods" the nav mesh and you can use it to calculate the playable area in a map, ask some source weirdo for more info
