THEY HAD *ONE* JOB! JUST MAKE A GOOD MULTIPLAYER!!! It's frustrating to see how bad this game is despite the potential the game has.

On Reddit, when we first got the reveal trailer, I posted a thread where I voiced some concerns about the direction the game is taking, both in design and gameplay. Back then, I was crucified, with people saying how proud they are for preordering the most expensive edition of the game, expecting me to have a breakdown over them paying EA to release a mediocre game. I laughed at them back then, and I am laughing at them even harder now. Everything I was concerned about has proven to be the truth - even worse. - Server stability: one guy, claiming to be a server expert, said that there wouldn't be any problems with the servers despite the 128 player count. I laugh at that guy. - Specialist balance: an "insider" said that the specialists will be 100% limited, that there won't be a "meta" specialist. I laugh at that guy. - Map size: while people have been creaming their pants at the mention of insanely large maps, I look at the previous largest maps and see how they play poorly. And having triple the size of those maps, with just double the player count, I knew that the issue would be even worse. Lo and behold! Most of the time you are walking, while the vehicle slots are filled and no one wants to give you a lift. When you see that your sector is being capped, just the next sector over, by the time you arrive a single guy can cap it. - The design: it's a hero shooter, despite people in denial trying to say otherwise. Named characters with special abilities are called "heroes" in this industry. This is "Battlefield: Near Future Clone Wars". Only 8 people are fighting in this war, just copied and pasted. Their designs are meh, their voiceovers range from okay to the levels of cringe where both the voice actors and directors should be fired, as well as anyone who okayed the amount of cringe that's spewing out of the specialists' mouths. They are not even cheesy, just painfully cringe. You want NoPats? Give us the player customization in two parts: USA and Russia - with specific skins for each side that will NOT break the design of the game (Warzone is already a clown fest in regards to this, Battlefield V also turned into it, but Battlefield 2042 doesn't have to - but it definitely will). - Specialist design philosophy: no one cares about them. We don't have a story to care about them. Because we don't have a singleplayer campaign. You know, the environment which we can use to learn about the conflict, to learn the mechanics of the game - even if the story is mediocre. We don't have that. People high on copium actually believe that these specialist carry the story. They don't. Irish has no reason to fight for the Russians. Boris has no reason to fight for the Americans. The very idea of these NoPats is dumb - because we don't have fictional factions, we have established, IRL factions. There is no reason for Webster to be fighting on both sides. Why does he fight for USA? Or Russia? Or whoever? The reason I got is "he's a NoPat"... That's not a reason at all. If he has no country allegiances, why is he fighting for this specific side? There needs to be an explanation. You know what would have helped to actually clear that dumb plot hole? Eight more specialists, for the Russian side. Because we already know that USA has a hard on for having Russia as her enemy, then have 8 specialists be from different countries who are friendly with Russia, in her sphere of influence. Same with the USA, have Irish fight for his country, and a few other "western" countries, so Americans can jerk themselves off with this cold war recreation, but for resources now, instead of creating puppet governments. The concept is dumb, specialists shouldn't exist, and their unique gadgets should be limited to a class... you know, a CLASS, the thing which worked since Battlefield 1942 and which gives Battlefield its identity. -The gameplay: some Battlefield KZreadrs have already pointed it out, but this is not a strategic nor tactical Battlefield. This is a mindless sandbox, with no direction, and the purpose of which is to create those sweet meme videos for KZread, because God knows you won't be pulling great tactical moves with this one, where one good flank could decide the whole match and turn it around. Too much freedom means no direction. And without a direction, there's no balance. - The three packages: Hazard zone sucks. It's unnecessary, has no replay value, does nothing new, other games have done the same kind of gameplay far better and gives better rewards which actually mean something. All Out Warfare, as discussed above, is a mess. Portal is the only saving grace, where players can actually make a good Battlefield game for DICE, for free. It's the only thing I'd give money for. And it should be separate packages. I don't want to pay full price for one third of the game which I'll actually play, while the second third is an unimaginative snore fest and the final third is an unbalanced catastrophe with no design direction.

What lesson though? The only thing the executives care about is increasing shareholder value. The only thing that could convince them to change course is a large drop in share prices. Even then, it's unlikely that they would actually conclude what you would like them to ("we should make better games") and any change in strategy would be temporary until the share prices stabilize - then it's back to business as usual (i.e. get as much profit as you can). This isn't just an EA thing, it's true for pretty much all major publishers. It goes back to a doctrine called "shareholder theory", which basically states that a company's sole responsibility is to the shareholders. The chief executives are essentially their employees and answer only to them. They don't have any ethical or moral obligations towards their customers or employees; and they should engage in every business or employment practice that can increase value for shareholders as long as it isn't outright illegal. Once you know that, it starts to make sense why so many AAA publishers engage so readily in seemingly irrational and self-destructive practices.

Well, it`s fairly simple when you look who is in charge. Those game studios usually were founded by gamers who wanted to make their passion into a profession. As those companies grew more and more ppl at the top were replaced by suits who mainly cared about making money. Or you have passionate companies being bought up by bigger companies. In the end you have the passionate ppl at the bottom without much say in the decision making process while the clueless executives from above are just giving orders. Since those executives usually don`t know much about game design and or really care about the games themselves you keep getting sh*tshow release after sh*tshow release. And as long as they are bound to those executives or a substantial part of gamers would stop preordering games to check if they actually are worth buying there won`t be any change.

It's sad how DICE/EA just let it die, as it stopped working from one day to the next (in like 2007) and I couldn't get it to work with any "fix" out there. And it's sad they never did anything in that setting anymore, apart from this reference with a DLC for a later game or something. Titan Mode was something of a truly epic scale, especially for the time. - But then it also introduced a lot of lag with how ambitious it was.

I think you're misremembering things tbh. There were a lot of fucking terrible games that released throughout gaming history, but they faded into obscurity for being awful. Back then there wasn't the same level of attention on individual releases as there is now, given the much larger volume of players out there. This is especially true on PC. Look no further than Ross's Game Dungeon to find a few games that were lost to history for good reasons. "Armed and Delirious" was a 5 CD game which no human was ever meant to beat. Not for its difficulty per se, but for its ability to erode the mind of anyone who would witness it.

Imagine looking for a car, and the one offered to you is lacking half of the promised features, the other half isn't functional 100% of the time, and could potentially endanger you.
