Battle of the Clocks // Make Noise Tempi VS Busy Circuits Pamela's New Workout

Музыка

Two famous clocking modules, the Make Noise Tempi and Busy Circuits Pamela's New Workout, go head to head to determine which is the better clock. They both offer so much, we'll do a brief top down view of each and cover some popular features.

Pam's does take a while to learn and even longer to fully utilise it's complete functionality. I've had Pam's for nearly a year and I'm so glad I went for it over Tempi. It can do much more than just clocks, it can be its own generative sequencer, it can create so many different forms of modulation and can even act as an envelope generator. Pam stans for life!

So true! To play devils advocate, I think sometimes it's nice to have a module that serves one-ish purpose so you can quickly use it for that purpose and don't have to navigate through other functions to get to the one you want. Everyone has their own preference of how they like to modular, some people have gotten incredibly savvy with their Pam setups and it works remarkably well for them!

I got both , problem solved, both amazing. Both had features I wanted and using the states with Rene has opened up a new world . Pams ability to do show tempo and Euclidean rhythms is amazing. I clock tempi with Pams and have multiple options

This is a perfect demo of why having both is a super powerful combination. I also hate menu diving, but find that Pam is unbeatable in terms of the amount of set it and forget it modulation and randomization that it packs into such a small area. It really isn’t performance though - even using the CV inputs I haven’t found really much potential in that aspect, whereas the Tempi is clearly the goat for performance - not just in terms of its tactility but the ease of changing presets.

Hey, Nice channel. So it has been a while. Still on the wheels of modulation?

PNW isn’t menu diving. There’s only 1 level of menu for all functions, except the cv in has another level. I’ve got 2 pnw’s in my system. Most reliable module ever! Be sure to check the logic functions, slop, delay and euclidian algo’s. It really is an incredible module.

In my opinion if it has a screen and I need to push a button and twist a knob to navigate through that screen then I am menu diving. But hey if it works for you then that's all that matters. Those other functions you mention are great and powerful!

@@ModYouLater I would even expand "screen" to include visual display of LEDs, such as ES Pico Drums. That's still some major diving in that tiny module.

The tempi seems very tactile. But for me the multitude of functionalities makes Pam’s the winner. Especially for a smaller case.

For a smaller case definitely it definitely checks a lot of boxes!

I have both. Tempi is a nightmare, for me, to remember the key combinations.

For some reason I thought Pam's just did gate outputs. Having CV / LFO capabilities gives it a lot more scope than I realized.

It's definitely more of a "swiss army knife" module than anything. Playing with it reminded me of ornament and crime, but with less features and menu divey than O_c and therefore easier to move between functions.

Yeah, it's super flexible. Aside from normal divisions, I get a lot of use out of it for Euclidean rhythms and tempo synced modulation.

PNW reflects modern trends in modular where modules do more and more at the expense of immediate control. The menus on Pam's are easy to understand and navigate, but you child never change a bunch of stuff at once (aside from puritan change). Am that said. I really like it. If I had infinite money I would probably prefer to separate clock from sequencing, but

This isn’t a battle. Tempi can’t slave to any other clock properly. So it’s essentially useless if you want to synchronize to any other gear or daw. Pam all day.

Good point! Definitely didn't cover using these modules as follower clocks, just covered them as master clocks but it's a valid point.

Yup. Got ALM mmMIDI setup to send Pam run and clock. Perfect from my mixers MIDI clock or my MPC. Also, being able to see my BPM on a patch makes it much easier to edit in a DAW should I ever endeavour in that hellscape.
