Kings will only enter battle if they see their battle line started to falter. Of course, only a few kings or leaders do this. Most simply fled the battlefield and abandon their troops. It's kinda like all or nothing move. Normally, kings and generals do not join a fight since the risk often doesn't worth the benefit, except on a few rare occasions. It's not a matter of courage. It's about moral. If the leaders is killed, then it'll impact the moral of the troops and making a rout much more likely.

10:00 Wise. Always send the mercenaries first. They are less loyal, but eager to earn plunder. To ensure their continued support, force them between your lines and the enemies'. Don't give them a chance to reconsider and abandon you. As an added bonus, the more of them that die, perhaps the less you can pay the survivors... History and diplomacy is usually more complex than just a handshake. It's also about personal ambition and the ability to recognize when you can peacefully acomplish your goals or when diplomacy has run its course. Yes, all three pricipalities were in majority inhabited by romanians, but each principality was in a different sphere of influence - meaning that greater powers had an interest in keeping its influence over its piece of romanian land and not allowing for a greater romanian kingdom to be formed

And since the video focused on the unification of "Romania" I didn't want to go on a tangent about the temporary move of the Austrian capital to Prague.
