Hello!
A few days ago Battle of Normandy was released. But I am not even that excited about the map, I am always more interested in quality of life changes. And the Damage Model got a rework and it is much better now.
I forgot to mention in the video that the fuel tank explosions are now less likely. Before many larger aircraft were exploding quite easily. This is also much better now.

    Some good changes. Hope they also toned down the probability of explosions. It just felt arcady to see bombers explode after one or two bursts from a pair of 20 mm. On a side note, I just love the B/c cockpit.

    Good to see those changes. Imho the main thing to overhaul now is the way to OP Tempest modeling especially in the turn. Additionally it doesn´t loose enough speed while turning.

    Appreciate all your thoughts. Agree entirely on the DM going weird for the last 2 years. Good to see it looks a bit more in order now. Wish I could jump in and test, excited to watch anything you put out on this in the future.

    I tested the .303 caliber of the Hurricane and although it damages the structure a bit more than with the previous DM it is still better to aim at the enemy pilot, motor or radiators, as it should be. This new DM is a very important improvement. The damage model of the pilot with forced landings, too.

    I'm soo happy with the new dm, I never flew the mustang before cause the 50s were so underpowered, they feel amazing now, also the p47 is way more durable now as it should be

    Absolutely love what they have done. I feel like i can now fly the p-47 now it’s definitely more durable and the guns are alot more effective now

    So glad they're addressing the dmg model no 50s aren't cannons but the us wasn't trying to take down massive 4 engine bombers we were mainly dealing with small numble fighters. Hopefully they allow us to adjust the convergence per barrel so we can use the most common convergence pattern used by us piolets starting from the innermost pair had a ladder pattern ( ie. Inner 200y mid. 250y outer 300y) they liked this setup for it's almost shotgun like pattern because it had the highest chance of a hit and while a few hits may not destroy the aircraft it would almost certainly damage it to a point that any performance advantage it had was now gone and the piolet would no longer be focused on attacking but solely focused on survival, evasion or breaking contact

    Got a few one pass kills with the 51 and it felt great. I’ve noticed an increase in damaging wings and watching them snap when the target tries to pull high G. Incredibly satisfying.

    My wingman got confused and put a couple of cannon rounds into my spitfires wing. I could only look over in horror as my wing slowly bent and then snapped over the next 20 seconds. It was pretty great. Good damage model, and we spent the rest of the evening making fun of the friendly fire.

    Apologies if you are already aware of a yt video called 'Chuck Yeager on Air Combat', but if you've never seen it, it gives an insight into his experiences flying the Mustang against 9's and 190's during ww2. There's quite alot of info about .50 cals and 20/30mm cannon rounds - hence the reason for this post - and why he thought that using .50s gave the Mustang an advantage in dogfights. Alot of other stuff in there too. Once again, profuse apologies if 95% of you have seen it before but for some reason I felt the need to share it with the other 5% of Sheriff's fanbase...... Nice work btw mate - you're instructionals are different class - I can't imagine how long it takes to make them. Btw, there's a great title for a series of instructional vids at 11:46 - 'the college of life and death'. Awesome eh - I thought so anyway:). Good luck 69th_kilo9

    Some good changes for the positive. I know personally the things you mentioned in the dm has put me off playing for last year or so. I'd like to see some more components in the dm too if the game engine can do it like in il-2 tobruk, but these are def welcome changes.

    Great video, those slo-mo shots showing the shells tear into the plane were amazing, the amount of work that must go into modelling that is very impressive 👏 fair play to them for putting in the time and effort to improve the sim so much 👍 Looking forward to seeing you testing this all out with some awesome videos 😉👌

    I do too! its mostly a personal time issue, for this video I needed 3h and of course a good gameplay to show things. 4-5h is hard to come by atm.

    I really like the changes with the 13mm because I have lost a lot of fights because I lost a lot of fights because of just 1 hit from them. I got hit a bit in the wing from them in a flight and it wasn't just a sortie killer. It also does seem like I have gotten a lot more wing off kills which is really cool. It is hard to fully get the feel for kills with only like 20 multiplayer kills so far, but I think it is a huge step forward.

    5.01 is a very good update. We needed it badly. I was so frustrated with the P51B because the four guns couldn't reliably kill ONE BF109 ;)

    the instrument panel can be hidden and shown with I. The entire HUD can be hidden and shown with H.

    I think the changes are good, I just wonder why the 303, and 12.7’a haven’t had mixed belt options yet. Armor piercing followed by an incendiary round. Interesting enough the Russian planes 50’s have had the option now for years. But either way very happy to see these changes.

    Has been a while since I do not use IL2, I guess after the P-47 get into the game, and felt a bit frustrated about the damage model on those days, not even mention how easily were to do damage to the Jug, a fighter well know due it's durability, so, my question is, what is the state of the P-47 nowadays? I know is not a fighter much visited for you, but you alwas has been a reference to consult to, the Jug is one of my top three favs, with the Anton and Lightning, so I would rater to know your opinion. Regards.

    Do they model API rounds though? That is and will always be main main concern. I've heard people saying that the 50 cal AP rounds act like API in-game, but I took it with a grain of salt.

    Not as of yet IIRC, but properly modelled incendiary ammunition is in the works along with the expanded fuel system.

    I tried this game after years, because I got new PC and it works now in ultra on 4k, but sadly I have now some problems with camera settings. Somehow it is not working like axis, but going all out and then going back to center position. I used "mushroom" on joystick to look around. :/

    Fully interactive cockpits is a no-go. It has been adresed by the developers plenty of times before. More realistic startups, I kind of agree, and it might happen, but shold they use "resources" on that? I remeber many years ago, (in MP) planes started with cold engines, and in Stalingard winter it was an issue. Usualy players just started stright from the parking area, with cold engines and used lower power until the engine got warm enough. My point is, people usualy cant even bother to taxy into the runway proper, I wonder how much would they bother with a more complex engine start?

    Yeah i dont see that as a priority. Would be nice to have it optionally. But system modelling was never a priority in il2

    @@SheriffsSimShack Yes optional would be ideal. I also do notice that if you play multiplayer, you just want to get back in the air and don't really care for all those details but in singleplayer then those details seem to provide a better immersive experience. But maybe thats just my opinion.

    Better, but still shit imo. They will affect the aero of course and make people rtb but for killing still meh. There are reasons why they were phased out

    I dont expect wonders, everyone convertet to cannons/HMG for a reason. But hoping that intense volume leads to results.

    I tested them, and as you say, they don't make wonders, although they affect the structure a bit more than before (some aileron or elevator sometimes). Anyway it is still better to focus on the pilot, motor or radiators. But hey, it is .303. They discarted it because of that.

    Yeap dm now is just brilliant. My only consern is that mk 108 could have a little beat more destructive power, appart from that excellent dm.

    I tried out the hurricane with the 12 303s. Not much change there. You can't kill the pilot like using the 50s because of the armor plate. Shots to the wings are meh. You basically have to pretend you're shooting ww1 planes, and shoot the engine or the pilot from an angle where there's no armor. Since the 303 is represented in both BoX and FC, I wonder if they kept it more focused to not over damage wood/canvas planes. I was a little unimpressed with the 50s at first. I had been using the 50 cal mod, which I was happy with. After playing with the new 50s more I think I'm ready to drop the mod. They are pilot kill machines, and they can even saw some wings off. My only real complaint is that the visual damage model doesn't match at all anymore. There is just not enough holes visualized in the plane to come close to the number of rounds actually on target. I'd say the visual model is representing about 10-15% of the actual bullet strikes.

    Great video, Sheriff. Thx! What I am still missing is a more realistic bullet trajectory. They still fly to far straight without loosing kinetic energy an fall earlier. I personally think that Cliffs of Dover is a good example here. An option to change vertical and horizontal convergence to fit personal setups would also gain the quality of this game/sim. What do you think?

    I never noticed that much difference to clod. I never perceived the trajectories to be inconvincing. Or better: i don't know if bos is wrong. Bullets zeroed to 200, 400m fly in a perceived straight line for a while.

    Can you turn the red range and fighter type icons on when flying on Combat box? Or at least have the map with the radar? It's just impossible to gauge distance in this sim.

    finaly after 2 years they made a change... dover-calais part of map that gona get mostly used in online 24/7 out of all thouse 100000+km sq they made, same like it was in clod and old il-2... now 2 more years and maybe they realise how mutch engine timers harm game expiriance on usa airplanes, cripeling them unhistoricly compared to other airplanes in game.

    Am I the only one who finds it a bit weird, that the landing beaches over Normandy at the time of the invasion as well as the artificial harbour are completely empty? Not a single boat, ship, vessel or any vehicles in sight. Hard to imagine, that there should be an Invasion going on.

    The setup in the mission was not during the invasion. Also the amount of ships and more is up to the mission creators and is not preset by the game if that makes sense

    Thanks for your reply. I was talking about the solo campaign. During the phase of the invasion the beachheads are completely empty and therefore the environment isn't very immersive.

    I checked out the IL2 website and looked at all versions and the planes that come with them. Then looked at the collector planes. I was dismayed by how few planes I could fly even if I bought all of the premium versions and all of the collector planes. And the price of all of that was ridiculous. Didn't they learn a lesson from the older original Maddox Il2 game? That older version had three times the planes and even then players were not satisfied. Then they cracked the code and out came the "illegal" modded versions. Which, as far as I'm concerned, still didn't have enough different planes to fly!!! I still have a modded version (Deep Blue World) that I had installed about twice as many planes as the stock "1946" version and I still was not satisfied. I can fly close to 150 planes in that. I still fly it despite the older feel and eye-candy compared to the newer tech. But I'll be having none of this series, not with the very limited number of planes and the exorbitant cost buying every possible "premium" version and all of the collector planes. They ought to just have one huge version (super premium) with all the maps and all the content and collector planes, and sell it at a nice, fair price. If I were to buy everything they have uncombined as it is now, I'd spend too much time downloading separated stuff, that could easily be combined. But seriously, I'd probably still not buy it since I could only fly about 30 aircraft!! If I could fly 60 planes, then I'd give it a go possibly. What are the game developers of today thinking? Are they just too greedy? I've seen the tech and eye candy improve in the gaming world since the late nineties but at the same time how much content you can get has gone way, way down. I'd rather fly the old stuff. What you get for your money now is just sad compared to even 2010 or so.

    This reasoning is as old as the comparision could be made. But earning money is much harder today. The community is smaller and devs are expensive. They need to sell stuff. The did prolly learn the lesson of IL1946. In that sense that model doesnt work anymore. However the individual planes are now made with more higher technical and visual fidelity.

    @Mike - That's a somewhat flawed logic. Whether we're talking about flight or racing sims, or any game for that matter, the customer-expected fidelity standards in PC gaming have come a long way since late '90s-early 2000's (when original Il-2 was created). 3D models and textures complexity have increased exponentially since those times. One instrument panel model in today's Il-2 has more polygons in it than entire airplane model in the old Il-2. So had increased the requirements for the internal systems modelling and flight modelling. The latter takes much longer to work on nowadays, when computing power allows us to simulate many more aspects of flight dynamics than 20 years ago. At the same time, size of development teams remained similar (tiny in fact, compared to giants like EA or Microsoft). As a result, it takes many months of work to create a single virtual airplane or a car nowadays (and it case of study-simulators like DCS it takes even 3+ years). It's not a question of greed (modern Il-2 shop offers promos with massive discounts on regular basis), but rather of time and money resources. A day has only 24 hours, there's physically no way around it and there's only so much you can do with a small team of people that have to be paid. If development timeframe is fixed and the fidelity and quality of product is supposed to increase, the quantity must go down, while each single airplane will cost more. At the same time, however, to many of us, 30 detailed aircraft is better than 150 crappy ones - even though I remember old Il-2 with great sentiment, I just can't force myself to go back to it, not even because of graphics I can turn my blind eye on, but mostly because of hopelessly outdated fligth, damage and system modelling.

    I noticed the dorked, botched, woke swastikas. I'm not a Nazi, or for them, but I'm not offended by them (swastikas) either. So is there any way to restore them for your own personal preference. It's just more realistic. In the old IL2 Sturmovik, you could restore them for offline. And I always did because I didn't like to play on a server, even though the AI was lame. And does this newer version have offline content?
