No wonder William was the perfect man to conquer England. He had already been fighting battles of survival for most of his life before 1066.

Well, actually Harold Godwinson could have defeated William by not over committing into a hasty rapid march to face him after the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Instead, he should bide his time and scorch earth the South of England and rally the entire nationwide fyrds and more highly disciplined housecarls. His numbers would have swelled to 10,000 +++, strengthening his position in London and making William's position untenable. What is noted is that the Normans easily defeated less disciplined infantry. However against toughened infantry that operated in shield wall, they could be stopped and hacked to pieces. Eg. the Germans at the Battle of Civitate 1053 AD. Harold was too eager and probably too inexperienced, using heart more than his brain. If he had more experience in battles like William, he would have easily bested the Normans and send them fleeing

@@ConstantineJoseph Furthermore if Godwinson had survived after Hastings, he could have lead the resistance against the Norman invaders and made things very difficult for William's rule.

@@barbiquearea That is if he could survive Hastings. That eventuality would be supremely low as the entire Anglo Saxon military was pure infantry based. There were hardly any horses. Secondly the densely packed shield wall and the mass of bodies of armored mailed Anglo Saxons meant the King was literally amidst the main body, there was no retreating. The peculiar thing about Anglo Saxon military culture is that they are generally a Germanic ethos of fighting to the last man for their lord or king. That is why the "Mead Oath" is performed just before battle where every Fyrd and Huscarl recite the oath to fight or die fighting for his lord. I mean the Anglo Saxon's form of combat by the 11th century was heavily influenced by the Scandinavian Vikings that dominated the island for 2 centuries of politics and warfare. Yet, they did not possess the guile and high mobility of Viking infantry, still retaining the Late Roman Legio or Legionary form of shield wall and Germanic Spatha kind of combat structure. Another such instance of Anglo Saxon battle rigidity is seen in the Battle of Maldon where Anglo Saxons continue to battle on even as their Lord Brythnoth was slain early in the battlefield due to him standing taller than the average soldier, making him an easy target. Thus, King Harold would almost 100% would not survive an escape from Hastings, due to culture and the immobility of the Anglo Saxon (Romano - Scandinavian hybrid) infantry based system against the highly updated Frankish - Norman combined arms warfare. Harold needed to keep his cool and let William chase him. He needed to head to London, hunker down and get his closest Lieutenants to rally 10,000 to 20,000 more Anglo Saxon Fyrd and Huscarls to join his 6000 to 7000 tired troops in London. With 35,000 Anglo Saxons, William would have to reinforce with another 10,000 Normans to 18,000 troops which would have been a more suitable fight that Harold could have so much tactical and logistical advantage. Why do I say Harold should wait?? The populace are right behind him. He represents the Danish-Anglo Saxon post Canute leadership while the Normans were disliked, actually by everyone except the Lombard dukes who need mercenaries. Harold definitely showed his inexperience and his over zealous desire to prove himself to be the "legitimate" king

And survived assassination attempts
William always seems somehow despite the forces arrayed against him managed to survive to fight another and conquer whether it be through luck, military ability or mistakes of his enemy’s. A born survivor.
Sometimes I pull up one of HistoryMarche's videos thinking: "I know this story. I can tune out a bit." And yet I always find myself drawn in to the story and almost always learning a little something that I didn't before. Thank you for always teaching me something.

Nice video!! I read it in wikipedia and I don't believe how fast, friends turn in enemies, and how hard its to retain a duchy in the medieval age 😂

Maintaining a dukedom is a real cutthroat business.
fantastic series. never knew about these conflicts in normandy, great work!
William seems to have a charmed life.. Before 1066 he was so successful, surviving assasinatiin attempts and rebellions in his duchy, and even invasions from the king of france. Then after 1066, when the anglo-saxons kept rebelling, he also won many campaign and sieges and minor battles to keep hold of England, including the rebellions in York and even the time when he set a witch into the marshes to make rebells surrender who had been holding deep into difficult terrain.. He k ew not only pitched battles, but also harassing tactics, and also psychological tactis
And the Knights from Mortemer that came with William to conquer England would be known by the Anglocised name Mortimer.

7:00 - It's nice to see that "come at me, bro!" is a timeless human instinct.
One French army commanded by Odo, brother to the king Henry I of France, came from France along with troops led by Rainald, Count of Cleremont and Guy, Count of Ponthieu. The army entered Evreux and began looting. While Duke William the bastard was busy with king Henry I of France to the west of the Seine River, a force of Norman barons led by Robert, Count of Eu, Hugh of Gournay, Walter Giffard, Roger of Mortemer, and William de Warenne came out of their own lands to stop the French looters. The French force was widely scattered and was an easy target for the Norman forces of Robert, Count of Eu. The battle of Mortemer lasted for hours, but the French were defeated with heavy losses. Guy, Count of Ponthieu was taken as a prisoner during the the battle. When news of the defeat got to the French King he decided to withdraw. After the defeats of 1052-1054 the rebellious Norman lords were exiled, the lands of the Counts of Pointhieu were confiscated, and Guy, Count of Ponthieu became a vassal to William the Bastard after two years in a dungeon. William de Warenne was later rewarded with lands confiscated from his uncle, Roger of Mortemer,(whom broke a treaty with William the bastard) including the Castle of Mortimer and surrounding lands.

I have a suggestion for upcoming videos. Could you use some pictures of the soldier designs like the ones in your thumbnails to better show how specific troops looked like in the parts where you talk about them?
When your character arc involves kingship through conquest you get to split your forces accordingly 😂

If you don’t mind me asking but after you do videos on William the conqueror can you do a series on king Henry the first of England and his invasion of Normandy where king Henry will fight against his oldest brother Robert Curthose Duke of Normandy who was a veteran of the first crusade but I am interested in this invasion of Normandy by king Henry the first of England because at the battle of Tinchebray Henry captured a man named Edgar Etheling or Edgar the second and he was the last male member of the Royal house that ruled Wessex and he is a member of the royal house of Wessex because his paternal grandfather was king Edmund ironside king of England but during the battle of Tinchebray Robert curthouse of Normandy was captured however he had a son named William clito who continued to rebel which resulted in the battles of bremule and the battle of Bourgtherooulde and the battle of Bourgtheroulde is an interesting battle because before the battle Willam clito got married to Sibylla of Anjou daughter of king fulk of Jerusalem and older sister to Geoffrey Plantagenet count of anjou father of king Henry the second of England.
