Compared to the power, life is cheap in the eyes of ambitious politician, and the dead in a war is only a matter of number in a paper report only. Cao Cao is a very successful warlord, he has done many cruel decisions in many of his campaigns, which enable him to weaken his opponent as big as possible, but once he took control of his opponent land, he is managed to carry out many effective policy, which made him have a relatively high reputation among the civilian population

MYTH: Yuan Shao was arrogant and did not enjoy those who were not from aristocratic background like himself. TRUTH: Yuan Shao was handsome and respectable to everyone regardless of their background. Yuan Shao was very popular(he didnt become coalition leader by talking down to everyone) and was just as capable of recruiting capable people as Cao Cao, I would dare to say that Cao Cao probably learned this trait from Yuan Shao as a teenager. The arrogant aristocrat who felt like he deserve to rule due to his background better describes his half-brother/cousin Yuan Shu. Yuan Shao's biggest weakness was rather indecisiveness and lack of initiative.

Yuan Shao just didn't listen to his advisors, Cao Cao listened to Xu You for example then killed him as he was too irritating, sums up their approaches right there. Yuan Shao was very brave actually often leading on the front lines with his men against Gongsun Zhan saying a leader should die with his men, that's already 1000 times more noble than anything Liu Bei did, and it's kind of incredible he gets portrayed as a super poncy guy that hides behind his men.

According to the Romance chapter and opera "Riding alone for thousands of miles," Guan Yu served Cao Cao during the Battle of Guandu and was an integral part of his victory. After Liu Bei's defeat, Guan Yu was separated from his lord and no news came of whether or not Liu had survived. Guan then offered his service to Cao on the condition that if and when Liu ever appeared he would have to leave Cao to return to his sworn brother. Liu Bei did re-emerge after the Guandu and Guan thus took his leave from Cao Cao's forces. Along the way back, many of Cao's officers tried to stop Guan Yu, fearing his prowess in the inevitable battles he would fight against them, but none were successful. Cao Cao himself scolded them for trying to stop Guan, saying that they could all learn a lesson from his loyalty and virtue.

The early careers of Cao Cao's was perhaps one of the most interesting profiles to study. Having started out as merely one of the many bit player warlords, he was able to repeatedly get an advantage on much bigger, tougher foes by fully utilizing talented individuals and having high initiative to balance the odds. \(இдஇ )/ His dynamism and cunning makes him a very interesting figure to read, combining elements of a ruthless CEO and a battle hungry general. But best of all? His ultimate goal is not that bad either, to unite the land under one banner again and this time under able leadership. This is why he is always portrayed either as a dangerous (but interesting) villain who can always exploit the situation and challenge the protagonists, or a great gray anti-hero, a Byronic rebel reformer ready to to the utmost to accomplish his goals while ruthlessly burning the rotten elements down. He would have been the undisputed master of the post Han world if not for a realm of worthy heroes who opposed him.

@@user-xb9yv2ci4c Well....Later generations'comments on the history of the Three Kingdoms are quite special. Because it has its own history (The Records of Three Kingdoms) and romantic literary works (The Romance of the Three Kingdoms). We usually look at your problem from two perspectives:From the angle of official history, it is a matter of course that a fatuous last dynasty was destroyed. As long as you can defeat other opponents, everyone has the right to win the throne. The winner is justice. In a sense, "Natural selection, survival of the fittest" is the survival rules of nature and human society. So People tend to evaluate the person's achievements rather than whether his actions are legitimate. From the perspective of Literary Works, Romance of The Three Kingdoms is compiled into a semi-fictional literary masterpiece during the Ming Dynasty by Luo Guanzhong. The novel comprises around 70+% fact and 20+% fiction.Their influence source by Confucianism manifest in the following concepts: loyalty to the emperor and being patriotic, practicing moral culture or destiny and leisure. The author regards Liu Bei, the declining aristocrat of the Han Dynasty, as a legitimate monarch. And these narratives also center on the Liu Bei camp as the central recurring character who frames and organizes the talk. So people are more willing to support the orthodox successors portrayed by the author.

@@user-xb9yv2ci4c It's literally 2000 years ago, and it was a civil war, so we are not that emotionally invested in things like "criminal" or "legitimacy". As to exploiting people, at that age most of the population was illiterate and starving anyway, living under the ruling dynasties and warlords was not that different. That being said, we generally do not really believe in such things as "legitimacy of dynasties", we think that when a dynasty cannot hold itself together then it deserves to be overthrown, and conversely that if a dynasty got overthrown it meant that it had its own problems. Cao Cao was, apart from a famous warlord and general, also a great poet, a lot of people today admire him, while others point out that he at occasions massacred entire cities. Liu Bei in history had a very inspiring story of rising from grassroot to greatness, and was admired for his tenacity and great aspirations even at the most difficult times.

A bit of inaccuracies/mistakes at around 5:20. . (1) It's a bit inaccurate to say Cao Cao was Liu Bei's "lord" ... in that the commonplace term used to describe someone in a situation like Liu Bei was a "guest general." A defeated lord in China, often tended to seek the hospitality, protection, and patronage of another lord, and while it was possible the "guest" might just end up under the service of the "host", it was also possible that the "host" would actually help the "guest" to rise up again. Both instances happened numerously in China, and Liu Bei was not under the service of Cao Cao around 200 CE. The term "patron" or "host" would have been more proper. . (2) 05:23 narrates " (Liu Bei) pledged himself to Yuan Shao's half-brother" ... which seems to be a major mix-up. Yuan Shao's half-brother Yuan Shu died in 199 CE. I'm guessing it's due to the complicated nature of political events during the time might have caused a bit of a confusion. Initially, Liu Bei was under the service of Gongsun Zahn, and the warlords were divided into two major rivaling coalitions: Yuan Shao/Cao Cao/Liu Biao vs. Gongsun Zahn/Yuan Shu/Tao Qian. However, Liu Bei slipped away from Gongsun Zahn's control and took governorship of Xu province after Tao Qian's death.. and then defected to the Yuan-Cao coalition. He never 'pledged' himself to anyone since then. At 200 CE, after gaining control of Xu province for the second time (after a seriously complicated chain of events) he allied with Yuan Shao when the Yuan-Cao coalition broke up.

WTF is the first half part of the video, it completely misunderstood the series of events that led to the rise of Dong Zhuo. When the video said that Dong was charged in 184 with restoring order to the realm, the map is showing him crushing the yellow turbans in the east. In reality Dong Zhuo was utterly rekt by yellow turbans and demoted, and where he shined was in the western province of Liang(Liangzhou in the video), that means when Emperor Ling died and Grand General He Jin ordered the frontier troops to capital to help him eliminating the enunches ( Notice this point, the reason of Dong's march on Luoyang, is oversimplified by the video into insubordination and a simple lust of power), Dong marched east towards the capital, while the video is showing him marching west. Then the video said that Dong "initially" burned down Luoyang, then got to Chang'an and enthroned a child. How can you mess up the timeline so entirely? Dong Zhuo marched east from Liangzhou to imperial capital Luoyang, then he took the opportunity of a power vacuum left by the assassination of He Jin to dethrone the current emperor and enthrone another child candidate, in Luoyang, not in Chang'an. It was this action that enraged the entire empire and resulted in the anti-Dong Zhuo coalition "Guandong Alliance" which is shown in the video. It was the coaltion forces' closing in on the Imperial capital that caused Dong to abandon and burn the capital Luoyang, and retreated into the western old capital of Chang'an, where is closer to his power base, the forementioned Liangzhou. The lack of research reflected in the first 3 minutes of this video makes me very disappointed because this happened before with the china-related videos of this channel, as i recall the facade of mistaking Western Liao for Western Xia, and the Chinese Jin dynaty for Jurchen Jin dynasty in the Rise of Mongol video.

I also was concerned over the bits you mentioned because I remember reading in-depth of Chinese history during this era of time and he certainly was defeated by the Yellow Turbans in 184 while being amazing in the west. Overall I enjoyed this video and it does show what not to do in terms of military strategy!

Out of the three warlords of the three kingdoms, cao cao is the smartest. Liu Bei and Sun Quan couldn’t think as good as Cao Cao. The other warlords relied on advisors to help them govern their land. An example of this would be the battle of Guandu, where Yuan Shao was destroyed by Cao Cao.

True the numbers heavily favored Cao Cao since he had something near 2000 warships, the Shu-Wu alliance did hold about 50-100... placing the total naval forces at 2100. No WW2 battle, Roman, or Greek battlefield approaches that as far as I’m aware. If I’m incorrect, please let me know the battle because I would love to learn about it.
