As an FYI to folks, it's still a lot cheaper to build your own batteries and it's pretty easy to do. I think it cost me just under $2900 to build a 15kWh battery about 18 months ago when prices were at their peak. That was all new cells, BMS, etc, and before the tax credit. With the credit, you can easily build the same battery for under $2k! The ROI on DIY is MUCH better.

Using her numbers, that's about $0.05/kWh, but it's actually lower than that since that's using less than 80% of the daily capacity of the battery. The cells I used are rated for 7000 cycles before the degradation is down to 80%... that's over 19 years if only using one cycle/day. Chances are the calendar life of the cells will be more of an impact to degradation! Not to mention I'm sure the tech of current batteries will be obsolete well before 19 years, and whatever replaces them will no doubt be cheaper and have more life/capacity.

I'm still waiting for a kit that'll let me drop the battery out of my Bolt, or a used/junked Leaf or something, and bolt it to my garage wall to store power for my house. An end of life Bolt battery pack could still have 30kWh of useful capacity. 30kWh would be $30,000 worth of Tesla Powerwalls, or $20k of semi-DIY batteries, for just the price of the kit and the labor.

Maybe you know this already but utility-scale battery systems are already being tested that use recycled EV batteries. Energy density matters a lot less once you take the battery out of a vehicle, so if you line up dozens or hundreds of these batteries on cheap land, even if they have 50% remaining capacity, that's a ton of energy storage at bargain pricing - and environmentally friendly. So I guarantee DIY people will do it, If they aren't already.

Where the net metering thing ends up is everyone who can will be offgrid and the people who cant will see much higher rates due to the utilities smaller customer base to spread the costs across. Which in turn will motivate more people who are edge cases to go offgrid. The utilities will use their political power and donations to politicians to fight this but in the end baring some amazing innovation like fusion they will have a tough road ahead. The future will be interesting.

In FL I'd love to go solar but I'm a low energy user, only $80-90/month including the Tesla. (It would be $120-130 in summer if I stayed all year) A Mona Lee quote came in at $189/month so obviously there is no payback. Power cost about 0.15kw.

Just discovered your channel today. Great content. I do think lithium iron phosphate (lifepo4) is a better chemestry than lithium ion. What are your thoughts? In any case, the cost of these batteries has come to a point that many more people can find ebergy storage an option. If you are able to build the battery yourself, even more affordable.

It will make vehicle to grid and vehicle to home possible. It won't make sense to buy a separate battery when a giant battery is sitting in your EV already.

I expect inflation will more than compensate for the loss of capacity. Even at 2% it will compound so when the battery is at 80% the cost of electricity will be around 1.25 x as expensive. If inflation is higher than 2% which is generally the case for energy, the payback will improve further. Solar farms need new panels every 20-30 years and wind turbines replacing every 20 years or sooner if climate change alters wind profile. So prices for electricity are unlikely to drop especially as we add storage to cover the peak emergency demand mostly met by gas, oil and coal. The cell price has dropped so low that the bulk of the cost of the home battery is in other factors battery management system safety measures waterproof casings and route to market. If new battery chemistry moves the goal posts it will not make prices drop much further as it shortens the useful life of the mega factories likely requiring expensive software and tooling changes. Demand will ramp up with commercial storage banks being built into the Grid and increasing demand for EVs.

Pretty disappointing video. I’ve liked the others I watched. You touched on the big issue for net metering being non-existent or being severely cut back. People in these markets may be looking at 20+ yr ROI for solar. A financed system would never pay for itself! Texas is one of these states so doing a video of the economics of this might really help people. My anecdotal data on power used vs sent to the grid is 50% so capturing more/all solar power produced shortens the solar ROI once the battery is paid for. The difference between retail and wholesale prices multiplied by increased solar capture over a year will help understand the payback timeline. I opted for a grid tied battery so there is no backup capability. I have a generator for a major outage and smaller portable battery for short outages. Sizing a solar/battery system for long term whole house (AC, heat pump, furnace) is quite expensive and out of reach for most people buying a system.
