Today we are diving into the current state of the economy when it comes to residential solar systems. Are prices as low as they get? Is buying solar a good idea? 2023 was a very difficult year for most residential solar installers. The amount of stock available drove prices so low it is almost hard to believe. Thousands of people were laid off. Let's dig deeper into where we are going with solar? Will batteries save the day?

For the industry to have a future they need to massively reduce their labor costs. There is no other way. I am sorry. Companies cannot keep charging $40K for materials that cost $6K.

30% origination fees are ridiculously huge. For a car dealership, getting you a car loan might get a 250-500 flat payment, or depending on the bank, 1-2% of loan value, which can get up to maybe 3,000 on something like a Porsche or an Escalade. Cars are much easier for everyone involved in the loan process, so i would expect solar financing to earn more per loan, but 30% is like payday loan territory.

The problem is why you sold solar and why residents bought it. It should be about relief of reliance on the grid, power outage back up. Relief could be much more load transferred to solar/battery, building a system over time, and let the grid take 240v loads at first. Other loads could be on a different panel, powered by the solar/battery.

Great points! I makes me shake my head when I hear people talk down on people that get solar on their homes and i've even seen blogs where people talk about how the electric companies are suffering, etc.. Fact is the utility companies (Electric, Gas, etc) are NOT our friends and nobody should be worried about the survival of their electric or gas company as there will always be (for the near to medium future) a majority of people that buy their electricity. My own local electric company calls itself (the friendly company) on its commercials yet they raise their rates on us every year. People should be more worried that the cost of electricity and natural gas, etc. is rising by several % every year and that is why people need to explore getting solar and or wind energy and battery backup storage for their home for night use when solar is down or at least for emergencies if the grid is down and they are grid tied. People shoud be looking at their electric company as a backup to their solar system.

I can’t agree more on this comment. My family and I are in the process of getting solar with home backup in the Bay Area. PG&E the company that pretty much was at fault for one of the most terrible forest fires in NorCal. They change the rules on NEM 3.0. The regulation has a new payment and compensation structure, which reduces the value of installing only solar panels across California and customers are having to pay for panels and batteries that PG&E is purchasing. It’s only gonna get worse and worse in terms of paying for electricity. If you can get solar with home backup and zero-out your bill that would be step one to energy independence.

I’m following the battery market - excited by the new advances on solid state and using Na vs Li to reduce costs. For home power - that uses SO much less than vehicles, prices should come down a lot. Combine this with improved smart breaker panels or alike to power only what you need when on battery - to make that last as long as possible, the batteries for homes can be paired down to what’s really needed vs. full-load. Oh!!!! And such a cute doodle!

There is a tsunami of cheap storage solutions for both solar and grid arbitrage (or "peak shaving"). Probably in the next two years, certainly once practical sodium batteries hit the market. In the meantime, IF you can manage it, NOW is a good time to do half the project and get some solar panels in place. And if you OWN a farm? You should look into bifacial panels erected along a North-South fenceline. Edit: Erected VERTICALLY. The panels themselves are relatively cheap, so you don't really need to maximize the panel efficiency like you used to. Panel costs are doing the same thing as computer storage, just at a slower pace. You need to have and maintain the fence ANYWAYS, it's not arable land, you're getting reasonable performance from the bifacial panels and eventually it becomes FREE energy. Think about what you can do with totally free energy on your farm.

BTW the graph you showed regarding China is the price of the solar cell, that silicon piece that goes in solar modules/panels. Not the cost of the panels themselves. But this goes to show that now glass + aluminum make a bigger part of the final cost than the solar cell itself!

Dryer and stove are seperate due to high load. We rarely reach 5KW use, we are usually around 300-600w. When power has gone out and at night, it still handles everything easily. It switches fast to battery/solar. Here we have frequent sudden drops in voltage and it handles it well. Counted over 250 notifications of grid disconnect. Solark disconnects from grid about 5 mins for every electrical abnormality. So far it has helped us a lot when power goes out. Hoping it lives at least 10-15 years.

In my case the price of panels was not the issue. I asked several solar companies in my area about the low cost of solar panels and the total cost of installation. They told me that although the panel prices had dropped, the cost of labor and installation (the biggest costs) had risen making the net final cost about the same. If I could just buy the panels and plug them in myself I suppose I could save money, but going through a solar provider doesn't save anything at this point.

@@solartimeusa yes the companies that win on this will be the ones with the best model for reusing or recycling the equipment they remove. Also if they need to redo the fixings and cabling. The better they can use the residual equipment as well as disposing of that replaced. I expect the best option would be a coop of installers so they can take advantage of people familiar with the fixings and kit used within the collective. They can also set up the logistics for recycle/reuse with the huge advantage of scale. As with all such things the early entrants will likely reap the rewards but also need to be more risk aware.
