Bass Teacher REACTION | "The Pot" - TOOL | Does Justin Chancellor Have The BEST Bass Tone EVER?

GET MY "TOOL" BASS TONE PRESET: / lowenduniversity

➡️ Find me another band that can COMPLETELY transform you into their world - in minutes - better than ‪@TOOLmusic‬ can. I'll wait. "The Pot" from Tool's 2006 album "10,000 Days" is a perfect commercial rock song, but is also the complete anthesis of a commercial rock song at the same time. This band balances the art of obscurity and avant-garde composition styles while delivering it in such a way that immediately grabs anybody who listens. In this video, I listen to the studio version of "The Pot" and dig deep under the surface to figure out why it has the effect it has on listeners, tips on playing the iconic bass intro, Tool's unique composition style, how they fluidly code switch between each instrument, tips on dialing in Justin's magnificent tone, and much more. This song has INSANE replay value, and never gets old to me...

What I love most about Tool is how much space they like to use in their music. Long intros to build atmosphere, deep melodic intermissions that put you in a trance. They aren’t afraid to make you listen to a 10 minute song that feels like 5 only minutes. Such a special time to be alive to witness a gathering of such genuine art.

TOOL is art at the highest level. I see 4 master's at their craft: Maynard's lyrics and vocals are well thought out and have so many meanings into one. Justin's bass is like Thor's hammer in a bass guitar. Adam's guitar is alien-like from the 4th dimension. Danny's drum's and technique reminds me of a human octopus doing 12 things at once add it all together and you get masterpiece music. Fuckin incredible band!!

Been going to concerts since the early 80's, saw some of the 'biggies', and with out a doubt, Tool had to be THE BEST CONCERT EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD. every sense was pummeled by the time i walked out of MSG. Being a drum and bass head, i was please to see Maynard is a part of the band with his vocals just being another instrument. Tool is definitely a band where you cannot remove one of its parts and continue on.

That speech around the 8 minute mark just put into words why I love tool so much. How they constantly build the song over the course of many minutes, and don't give you the peak towards the end even if the chorus has already happened. Meanwhile most other bands have the chorus be the peak, and it just doesn't mean as much

I haven’t thought of it before but the last part of the song, starting with “lier, lawer…”, is basically a quick recap of the whole song. First lone vocals, main riff, C over D, chorus, bride and then payoff (which is new). It’s been my favourite tune since 2006 and I’ve never thought of this before. Fucking Tool!❤

I’m new to your channel but I just subbed because the way you connect what musicians hear and how it relates to what a song FEELS like is unique. Your explanation of why the intro bass FEELS different due to the technique used is not something the average person would ever be able to discern. Thank you for digging deep into what makes Tool unique and why they have that “distinct” sound that non-musicians wouldn’t ever be able to articulate. Few bands are able to appeal to both musicians and normies (like dirty loops), and you’ve successfully described how they’re able to do that. 👏 👏

They left the Pot on the high D bc it leads perfectly into Lipan Conjuring as a cool down and then into Last Keys,. Maynard has said himself in the past the reason they were not on streaming platforms was bc TooL Albums are created ands meant to be listened to front to back. You can pick many tracks throughout the discography that supports this and to this day TooL is one of the only bands that puts together a complete album that is created to be listened to track 1-10. Yes they make great singles. But if you also listen to the album as a whole. You understand the vision on each listening experience.

This might be my favorite comment I've gotten. I appreciate that observation, because it's more or less what I feel like on the other end, and what I hope to achieve with these videos. See you around, Scott! Cheers!

Thanks so much for this video. I've always been so... captured by this song along with many other Tool songs and as someone who is learning but still very music illiterate I have never been able to illustrate what it is that's so amazing about their songs. Your breakdown does that perfectly. I can finally put my feelings for this song into words and understand what I'm hearing! :P

Man, I keep coming back to that Flat 5 “Eye” towards the end in the vocals. It sounds hauntingly good. I need a music lesson on specifically why that sounds so damn good, lol.

That was well described. "One way ticket you can't get off, and don't want too".. there's so many endings that you have to listen to the build up, to really get all the emotion and build up we were waiting for.. so many great songs by tool have this, and do this to me.. u can't just start at the ending, u must listen to it allth way thru, like a one way ticket.. I like that analogy sir

Dude, FANTASTIC point about the loss of swagger when picking every single note! I never noticed that before, but you're 100% right, that undefined swagger factor is key to the "soul" of this song. My fav Tool song is the current Tool song I'm listening to at that moment haha! Thanks for the video, count me subbed!

Glad I stumbled upon this video. I'm a sucker anytime The Pot comes up. But I like your application of theory and understanding how they composed, like the C/D or noticing the flat V etc. Good job

I loved that and lso really enjoyed the schism and other videos. Tool are an amazing band. I found you by accident while searching for bass guitars for my daughter who is learning to play and I was going through youtube about them. Your videos are fantastic, I love what you do and your passion. Really appreciate the time and effort you put in and have watched a quite a few so far and look forward to going through your work. I don't play bass but love it and find it can be underrated as an instrument. What you do here is show how important and what bass brings to music and just want to give you acknowledgement. I love music in many genres. Cheers.

Love your breakdown. They seem to be only truly appreciated by musicians and enthusiasts. Been to 2 concerts now and it's 10 fold live! Can't wait for #3! Takes them 10 years to put out an album NOT because they're lazy.. It's because they're brilliant!!!!! Most people just don't respect our understand. They're our generations Rush I feel. Or Zeppelin... Amazing

I absolutely agree, the songs do something with you. When I was in school I had a discussion with a friend. He said "you can't dance to tool, you can't chill to tool you can't mosh to it...what it's for?" And I just responded "well I get this feeling inside that I cannot understand - and that makes listening to tool songs amazing"

Tool and A perfect circle are just amazing as they let each member shine in each song. They don’t need to do a solo. Each song shows the members are incredibly talented. And they feature the drums and bass over the guitar. That’s what hooked me.
