Low End University was founded by Mark Michell, an internationally-touring and recording bassist known for his work with Scale the Summit, Tony MacAlpine, Tetrafusion, and Watermox. His most-recent albums were released to Billboard-charting acclaim in the Top 200, Top Rock Albums, Top Independent Albums, Heatseekers Albums, Top Current Albums and Contemporary Jazz Albums categories.
For over a decade, Michell has been teaching clinics to students around the globe while on tour, has enrolled thousands of students through Low End University's online bass academy, and has published six method books for bass guitar. 2016 saw the release of his instructional DVD "Advanced Rock Bass" after signing a worldwide publishing deal with Hal Leonard Music Corporation, and later that year was hand-selected to the panel of professors at the Warwick Bass Camp in Germany to teach alongside the best bass players in the world.

One of the best bands ever. If you’re gonna do another, avoid the more mainstream ones like ‘Epic’ or ‘the real thing’. Try anything from the album Angel dust which is their best album overall but I would probably do ‘the gentle art of making enemies’ from King for a day. One of their more straightforward (kind of) songs, Jizzlober’ if you’re feeling adventurous or ‘stripsearch’ if you just want total bass line heaven.
Mike was my original influence on bass. He is a main reason why I did so many fills in songs when I played. Then I added Ryan from mudvaynes influence and the two combined in me to make a very interesting player. Mike is still a fucking bass god!
check out Rose Rose - liquidation album - Your Ignorance Is Our Death.
10:53 Yes! That is NOFX :)
check out a song where he plays 2 saxes at the same time. great live band saw them a few times in NYC in the 90's.
Ma ndo cazzo viveva questo prima del 2024? E che cazzo
Man I gotta be honest, it’s cool seeing ya play bass and all, but I’d listen to you just react to the tunes for a half hour also. U might wanna consider starting a separate podcast for strait up reactions
Ur good at it and it’s fun watching us my point. Cheers my dude!
Not unreleased, was a big radio single the summer of 1995. It’s my favorite nineties GD song 100
lol crazy stuff
As someone else said here. Jean Jaque Burnell of the Stranglers should be someone you should look at.
I did just a few weeks ago here! kzread.info/dash/bejne/lXh7rZeHqrCeobw.html
If you ever return to Ned's, check out something from their second album Are You Normal? like "Intact" or "Legoland". That's where they really figure out how to use the double bass + guitar setup with interlocking melodies, plus Dan's drumming takes another leap forward.
The tension and release with the 4th chord where it wants to resolve...does the Blink 182 song make that resolution? Having heard the tune that was based on the intro that foreshadowed this chord progression, is it possible that our brains want that resolution?
I'd have to give it a listen...been a lifetime since I think I've listened to that Blink song critically!
John customized his base and amps to get to his signature base guitarist style. He was a professionally trained musician. He is not playing just base, the treble is turned up and he is adding all of the background support to the sound. That way the band sounds much larger than an average 3 piece band. When John passed Pete said to replace his sound, you need more instruments to replicate all of the work that John was doing. That is why "the Ox" was also called "Thunder Fingers" and according to Rolling Stone, is the best bassist ever..
they are awesome. their music isnt for everyone for sure, but if you open your mind and give it a chance, you just might reach the conclusion that they were true masters.
His musicianship is inspiring.
3:13 "The Ace of Spades. The Ace of Spades." xD
Love neds
That’s the first song from Porcupine Tree I listened ever, and because of it I began to enjoy them and prog in general, so…
Love it!
Can you please listen to the song Poptones from the Public Image Limited Album Metal Box, the bass by Jah Wobble is really cool on this. Its just like this categorized in the post punk genre, but its a totaly different sound
Mike and a whole host of punk bassists are the reason I play bass!!! Pick hard and fill the space I say
Been following them around the UK since the early 90’s and saw them a few weeks ago in their home town. Still sound as good today as they did then. The only band that makes me feel 17 again. Amazing
Love it!!
Everything up to nimrod is 1/2 step. Nimrod has a mix of standard and 1/2. Insomniac best GD album lmo. Funny i started learning green day and now between the buried and me and dance gavin dance are what ive been practicing. Im gonna join patreon at some point. i enjoy your content, the full album content will be worth it i have no doubt. Recently got my first multi scale bass, btb Ibanez. For playing 27 years i have almost no gear lol. Now 2 basses and 1 amp. Working on changing that lol.
Love to hear it man, I look forward to seeing you over there! Those Ibanez basses look sweet, tons of my pals play them. I've actually never owned an Ibby!
his technique is INSANE.
Indeed!
Green Day stray heart is led by a great bass line you might light it kinda has a 50’s so sound. Cool video too. Green Day “Stray Heart”
FYI Neds were higher on the bill then Nirvana at the 1991 Reading Festival. That was just before Nevermind was released.... That was a fun weekend! EDIT: Neds got a lot of stick for basically being a silly indie rock band for students, but they were very clever with what they did. All lovely guys too, apparently, and had an insanely loyal following.
Been a huge fan of them since 92....these guys opened up the alternative rock world for me and cant thank them enough for the unique sounds they created. Amazing lads to date!!!!!
I have to throw a request out there for Hey Kids by The Oral Cigarettes (Japanese band). There is a good vid from Fender of the bass player doing a playthrough, but this being one of the most fun songs i've ever heard, I feel like it must be experienced first time by watching the fun they have performing live. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eKeaz9Ccl5Soqc4.htmlsi=ZsYcsHQByC2U5ymF
Alright, finished the vid. Pretty sure you're gay. Bass is for ass clowns
I'm only half way through the vid. Don't know if I hate you or love you. First time viewer. At this point I think you're gay.
DO ROQUEFORT NEXT the bass on that song is also absolutely amazing
The amount of times he paused and rewound before the epic chorus was so frustrating to watch 😅
Sorry but gotta say you haven’t got his bass tone from this amazing song at all. He adds a beautiful soft tone while you’ve gone for a heavy distorted sound. Major fail. If you’re gonna try to teach this stuff get it right.
It's a pretty solid representation of the *average* tone on the whole record, which varies a LOT song-to-song. I modeled mine more after Paradise or Rocket Queen.
*NoFx is like a metal-core version of doo-wop. The singing, harmonics, octaves, chord progressions, etc.*
I would love for you to react to one of the most influential bands to Green Day. The Replacements. I recommend Shiftless When Idle. Listen to the best 13 year old bassist ever.
Lucky for you, they're going up tomorrow!
Great example of the sound track is better than the movie. Should also be noted Tre killed the drums on this song as well.
Dweeb
Awesome jam
Bought this cassette back in high school and have been a fan of the band ever since.
Heavy metal song? Nu metal song... Gringo ignorante.
The best part is that they're still around and playing shows in the UK
I know some fellows recommended checking hardcore bands, but I would love to suggest checking out Judge, specifically their song "Where it went". This will definitely scratch your thrash itch, a bit like Pennywise did but differently.
all time favorite GD song and ive lovd them for 30 years. love this channel
Thanks! I love you too!
I don’t believe you never heard this if you’re over 30
I haven’t heard it before.
I don't understand the people, the frogs is the best part
I’m siding with a song someone else mentioned. The song “Bricks” by Crimpshrine. The bass player is amazing!! The fills and breakdown involved in this song is the type of stuff that got me into bass. They were also very young when they were playing out and recording.
Rancid actually is rooted in ska. Rancid and Operation Ivy were both share guitarist Tim Armstrong and Bassist Matt Freeman
Ska is an often derided genre and I never understood why. It's just such fun music
Such a great song and so underrated
I saw them live last month!
