STRUNG OUT?! Bass Teacher REACTS to “Firecracker” & Jim Cherry

Музыка

FULL-ALBUM Reactions, Lessons & More 👉 / lowenduniversity
---------------------------------------------------
➡️ Today, I'm hearing Strung Out for the first time! Tons of you urged me to take a listen to late bassist Jim Cherry's playing, and his work on "Firecracker" showcased a really effective take on using fast bass chords within a skate-punk style. Setting up the song with those lower-register intervals really supported the track with a beefy intensity and energy. I love the note ranges he chose: JUST low enough to thicken up the mix, but JUST high enough to hear a clear separation in his implied melodies. I discuss some of the music theory behind the song's progression, the subtle root movements in the bass line, and how this very dense arrangement kicks off 1996's "Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues" with an epic bang. At the end, I also gave a little impromptu lecture on what I've learned reviewing punk songs so far... 😉🙏🏼🍒

You should absolutely check out No Use For A Name when you get a chance. Another fantastic Fat Wreck / skate punk band with that lead style bass you talk about. Matt Riddle is an epic and under appreciated player. Im a huge fan of their catalog (mostly 1999 and onwards) but here are some songs I’d recommend checking out where the bass shines a bit: Justified Black Eye, Angela, Coming Too Close, Part Two, Nailed Shut, Check for a Pulse, Under the Garden, The Dregs of Sobriety, Exit, Chasing Rainbows

@@LowEndUniversity BTW I liked your bit on "From the heart", punk has always been a music specifically inteded to illicit a purely emotional response. I think that was why Nu Metal blew up, it was the same concept but more marketable and on a bigger stage. Its telling that alot of punk singers do acoustic tours, and the crowd engagement is still on a level that most acoustic virtuoso's only dream of.

About time to have Strung Out featured here! Ryan Greene was the producer of this record, and pretty much the sound that you praise in the video, has been the benchmark for many skate punk bands, the so called "fat wreck sound". Additional note on the bass intro; there are two bass tracks, one for the higher notes/chords, and the second track is root (lower) notes, hence, that feeling of perfect frequency balance

Yup, you nailed it, Strung Out is pretty firmly seated in the skate punk sub genre…heck I’d even go so far to say they started that sound!😄 Later they do get a bit heavier, more metalcore and technical, as they just continued to get better at playing and writing. They’re a super tight and technical band today, but they never really lose those signature Strung Out melody hooks! 🤟 My favourite song is probably Swan Dive, it’s a beautiful song, a real uplifting fist pumper that just inspires you immediately! City Lights is pretty damn good too, one of my favourite opening guitar riffs for sure, and the fuckin drums on that track, like damn! 😄Definitely catch them live if you ever get a chance! It’s an experience! 🔥

This album is an all timer for me and was my soundtrack for end of high school/beginning of college. They do indeed have a huge metal influence, which caused some issue initially to getting signed with Fat Wreck and is something that they lean into even more heavily as their career progresses. Jason, the singer, at one point really bristled against being labeled as having the Fat Wreck sound, too. If you do indeed do a full album reaction, I would probably have to sign up for my first Patreon. 😅

Strung Out was a punk band that metal heads could get into. Jake Kiley's guitar playing style and tone were very accessible to headbangers!

Friend once said to me, “the two most outward expressive forms of music is jazz and blues and punk and hardcore, no contest.” I’m of course bias, but I still think that’s pretty true.

Fun fact about Jim, he also was a Metal head in high school. But he hung around with a bunch of punks. He was also probably a better guitar player than he was a bassist. He was a good friend of mine. A few days before he passed I had tried to get him go see this band Calavera with Me. He declined saying he was going to hang out with his wife and watch a movie. He invited me to a 4th of July party at his parents house, but for some reason or another I didn’t make it. He passed 3 days later. I wish I would have gone. Miss you Jim. RIP brother.

I was into metal through my sophomore year then started to listen to punk with my skateboard buddies. The biggest difference to me was just what you said. Metal was centered on the guitars. Punk was centered on equal parts. Melodic but fast. Love what you do a ton. Not just the punk but all of it.

Punk bands from this era absolutely loved first inversion chords. I think it's because it's really easy to go from a power chord to a first inversion chord (without the 5th) and it obviously sounds really good. You'll see the I to V (first inversion) to vi progression in quite a few songs from the time.

This one was awesome thanks! Your whole channel rules and really helps with the understanding of tempo and my ear for the notes. As a punk bassist, “Detroit” by Rancid is one of my favorites to play. I think you’d get a kick out of that one.

@LowEndUniversity tip. Considering all punks are self taught and have lousy technics n skills... try using a 0.5 pick so you can dig into the strings as hard and fast as possible (without having to worry they'll brake and ruin you) (cause that how we punks do it) (hahaha). (Thinks that key to how to approach getting the rhythm and sound of a (sk8)punker)

Such a classic intro and bass line. Jim Cherry also wrote a beautiful bass riff in the bridge of the song Paper Walls, on the album Twisted By Design. Most of their songs are in D standard and that was the remixed version btw which I feel sanitises the spirit of the original record.

Fishbone - Bonin' in the Boneyard 😁 #1 of my 2 requests lol. Fishbone are actually in the news right now, because 2 of the 4 founding members (including bassist Norwood Fisher) just left the band after 40+ years to pursue other interests. Perfect time for you to learn about the ska glory that is Fishbone. They've said the band will continue... But I don't know if anyone can match Norwood
