FAT MIKE requested this song! Bass Teacher REACTS to NOFX - “Suits and Ladders” Play Through

Музыка

"The War on Errorism" FULL-ALBUM Reaction: / full-album-nofx-105323625
---------------------------------------------------
➡️ When the artist themselves make a song suggestion, I take it 🫡! After seeing a few short clips of Fat Mike playing “Idiots Are Taking Over”, I wanted to see his bass play through of “Suits And Ladders” to really study his technique further. ‪@nofx4441‬ are a brand new band for me, and were key in starting this channel down a full-on punk rock discovery. His lines are deceptively tricky, and rely on a lot of nuance (even down to which way a string is plucked) to get the right “feel” and “bounce” his melodic bass riffs offer. I whip out my own P-Bass and a trusty .60mm pick to wrap my head around the oddly-phrased bass intro and discuss his palm muting approach, why elements of his technique are crucial to the bass line’s sound, a breakdown of the song’s chord progression, and some unsolicited advice on developing your own technique! 😉🤌🏼

Ok, I think the coolest bass line I've written in a long time is the one in Def Cons by the Codefendants. I'm learning how to use the bass as an important melody by letting the rest of the song breathe. Like McCartney did quite often. Don't let me down is a good example...I think playing less is kind of pretty neat.... what are your thoughts?

Rhythm section really? Idk from my perspective the rhythm (drums) specifically get great recognition due to the speed and coloring. The guitars and bass are generally seen as "boring" though. There are many examples of good players but the majority is simple basic power chords and root notes. But that I think is what makes it fun. There are bands that push the upper limits of what a noob can play making it a great genre for beginners that are into rock. There are even a handful that have very good guitars......Scott Sellers probably being the most technically impressive. The guitarist from Sum41's solos are pretty good too. Basically "good" doesn't mean "technical" just like "technical" doesn't mean "good". If a song is catchy and emotionally captivating it can be easy or complex. I think sometimes people need to realize not every song needs to sound like a swarm of bees and blast beats.....but also lifelong "beginners" need to be self aware enough that just because you like the genre doesn't mean it's technically impressive. It's ok to like simple music because it's about the overall vibe of the song....not the technical capabilities of the individual musician.

Brilliant song. Fat Mike always plays down his intellectualism, but that song follows the same narrative as Leo Tolstoy's "The Death of Ivan Ilyich." Furthermore, Tolstoy picked "Ivan Ilyich" because it was the most common name possible. Sort of the Russian equivalent of John Smith. If you know the story, it's clear that it wasn't an accident. And yeah, their riffs from 1991-1999 or were much busier than the later stuff. For me, that's kind of the golden era of NOFX.

I have no reason to watch a bass teacher reacting to songs, but your NoFX videos kept popping up on my recommended, and I really enjoyed your commentary! Really good insight into a band that's been one of my favorites for decades. I couldn't count how many times I've seen them live, but I just had the pleasure to see them for the last time on their final tour, in Japan. They were better than ever!!!

Love it. I do the same with the upstrokes on my pick playing. Only not as clean. That tight but relaxed left hand is not me. I waste so much energy flailing around and wear out. The upstroke is also something Joe from 88 fingers louie/rise against does a lot too. Love seeing you check out and review the stuff I grew up listening to and playing along with.... at least the ones I'm capable of playing along with.

Another great video, Mark! Hope you get the chance to make it to a NOFX show, you won't be disappointed! Whoops I OD'd would be an excellent next stop. FYI there are two ways he plays it, the studio version is played solo and really high up on the neck, and live he plays it in the lower octave accompanied with the rest of the band. Another good pick could be Eat the Meek which Mike has said is more complex than people think since it has a different 16-chord progression in each verse. Cheers!

I mostly play guitar but I dabble in a lot of instruments - non of them proficiently though :D I do sometimes pick up a bass, but I never spent a lot of time with it. These videos inspired me to learn some punk songs on bass (I am actually doing idiots are taking over bc of your video) and started experimenting with different ways of using the pick on both bass and guitar, so thanks a lot!! Another fantastic Punk band is Anti-Flag, and for a song with some great bass licks I'd highly recommend The Press Corpse Cheers :D

Honestly one of my favorite parts of this song is that repetitive bass part. It's given me chills lol, there's something ominous about how the song just kinda hollows out there and the bass sitting on that one note is just POWER. Paul mccartney had said the same about when he sits on the same note in Come Together at the end. It's such a strong, grounding effect

When I was learning guitar/ bass I always kept my nails cut in-line with the tip of my fingers. Keep the softer sound of the tips, but could curl fingers slightly for a crisper sound. Also could basically grip my index finger like a pick for faster strum attacks. Allowed for palm muting during. Basically ditched an actual pick early on. Even on guitar.
