If you've spent any amount of time on the web trying to figure out how to play your favorite bass lines, you've almost certainly come across bass tabs.
They're the (sometimes confusing) lines splattered with a ton of numbers and frequently, weird symbols. When I first started playing bass, I wasn't a fan of bass tabs - they were kind of confusing to me. They seemed like they were 'upside down'.
After I finally got my head around the idea though, I saw just how useful they could be. It was much easier learning how to read bass tabs than the standard notation - that's for sure! But it still came with it's own set of challenges.
In this video, you'll learn how to read bass tabs - including all the symbols, what they mean, and how to take the music from the screen to your bass.
Once you learn to decipher these tabs, a whole new world of possibilities opens up to you. Instead of needing someone to teach you songs, you can figure them out for yourself.
The one thing to be careful of when using the tabs you find online is that some of them will be just plain wrong. There are tons of good quality resources online, but a lot of bass tabs you find will just be terrible.
When you come across some like this 'in the wild', just take them with a grain of salt. If something doesn't sound right, then change it so it DOES sound right. You could also check with any musician friends you have if they think it's correct or not.
Now if you're a total beginner and you want to jump-start your playing, make sure you sign up for the BAB Beginners Starter Pack. In it, you'll get 8 lessons specifically designed for the beginner.
You'll learn:
A fundamental technique MISTAKE (make this error and your playing days are seriously numbered) and how to avoid it
How to MASTER your fretboard (and do it quickly)
The Instant Bass Line Formula so you can make your own bass lines right now (plus how to take these bass lines to the next level)
How to get started improvising on bass so you can create your own beautiful bass solos or blistering fills - and WITHOUT having to learn tons of scales, shapes or licks
To get started, just sign up on this page:
becomeabassist.com/bass-tabs-...
I'll send all the goodies straight to your email address and you can get started right away.
Good luck with the lesson and happy tab reading!
Cheers,
Luke

Quick correction - At the 9:10 mark, the note marked at the 5th fret on the A-string should actually be on the E-string.

Kayley Neil how is it going? I have been self teaching for 2 weeks and loving it! Admittedly I am a music major, so I have had some skills transfer. I came to this vid just to make sure I was doing everything right as I thought. I can already read sheet music, but tabs are so much easier.
