If you've spent any amount of time on the web trying to figure out how to play your favorite bass lines, you've almost certainly come across bass tabs.
They're the (sometimes confusing) lines splattered with a ton of numbers and frequently, weird symbols. When I first started playing bass, I wasn't a fan of bass tabs - they were kind of confusing to me. They seemed like they were 'upside down'.
After I finally got my head around the idea though, I saw just how useful they could be. It was much easier learning how to read bass tabs than the standard notation - that's for sure! But it still came with it's own set of challenges.
In this video, you'll learn how to read bass tabs - including all the symbols, what they mean, and how to take the music from the screen to your bass.
Once you learn to decipher these tabs, a whole new world of possibilities opens up to you. Instead of needing someone to teach you songs, you can figure them out for yourself.
The one thing to be careful of when using the tabs you find online is that some of them will be just plain wrong. There are tons of good quality resources online, but a lot of bass tabs you find will just be terrible.
When you come across some like this 'in the wild', just take them with a grain of salt. If something doesn't sound right, then change it so it DOES sound right. You could also check with any musician friends you have if they think it's correct or not.
Now if you're a total beginner and you want to jump-start your playing, make sure you sign up for the BAB Beginners Starter Pack. In it, you'll get 8 lessons specifically designed for the beginner.
You'll learn:
A fundamental technique MISTAKE (make this error and your playing days are seriously numbered) and how to avoid it
How to MASTER your fretboard (and do it quickly)
The Instant Bass Line Formula so you can make your own bass lines right now (plus how to take these bass lines to the next level)
How to get started improvising on bass so you can create your own beautiful bass solos or blistering fills - and WITHOUT having to learn tons of scales, shapes or licks
To get started, just sign up on this page:
becomeabassist.com/bass-tabs-...
I'll send all the goodies straight to your email address and you can get started right away.
Good luck with the lesson and happy tab reading!
Cheers,
Luke

Quick correction - At the 9:10 mark, the note marked at the 5th fret on the A-string should actually be on the E-string.

Kayley Neil how is it going? I have been self teaching for 2 weeks and loving it! Admittedly I am a music major, so I have had some skills transfer. I came to this vid just to make sure I was doing everything right as I thought. I can already read sheet music, but tabs are so much easier.

How are you coming along now?
as a "non english speaking person" (i'm belgian) i sometimes to put the playing speed on x75 (it gives you more time to translate in your head)... i used this technique on this video and i can say i all honesty, that this was one of the most instructive videos i have ever found on youtube.

This was so dang helpful. I’m a beginner. As in I have never picked up a musical instrument and I’m 38. I’ve always wanted to learn and I picked the bass..I’m a bit of a rock/ metal fan and I love the sound of the bass. Great video.

Same here, started with guitar when I was around 8 but my hands were too small to actually fret chords, so I picked up the ukulele and bass and have been playing for about 3 years. Never bothered to actually learn how to sight read though, so here I am
I'm just getting started with my bass playing and this is going to be super helpful! Gorillaz is my favourite band so when you used Feel Good Inc. as an example I jumped up in my seat and just spent a solid minute playing the riff over and over.

I used to play the electric guitar as a teen, but now at the age of 29 I've decided to take up the guitar again but this time with a bass. This video has helped me a lot and I think I'm going to buy my first bass guitar. Thanks for all the simply explained tips (a lot of other people over complicated things which initially put me off).

Thank you, man! I originally play the cello, so when i got a bass I got really confused when i saw these strange notes with numbers, but this really helps.
Very good bass guitar teacher with excellent step-by- step instruction!!
Finally a really clear and good explanation to the reading bass tabs
as soon as you started playing gorrilaz it just gave me more motivation omg
This helped me tremendously, the inversion of the strings. I was playing top down instead of bottom up, what a difference.
When you already play bass and read tabs but you saw a tool tab and your like wtf
This is an xcellent video. Love your delivery, really clear and precise. Thank you Luke 👏👏

Probably the most helpful and understandable tutorial i've watched, thank you very much :)

super helpful, trying to figure out how to read bass music before I actually get one, thanks!
Your videos are helping me a lot. Thank YOU!!
Thank you so much I rewatch this video many times and now I'm able to read Bass tabs Tnx for the good advice
Thanks for your advice about the base tabs being upside down and how you see it and reverse it in your mind when you look at the fretboard, I can now follow bass tabs much more easily. Another I’ve found is to look at the fretboard and think the strings are right but the numbers on the bass tab are upside down.
This is an excellent lesson and explanation.
THANK YOU SO MUCH I WAD ALWAYS SO CONFUSED ABOUT THE NUMBERS

Actually my name is Gavin , learning to read tabs is like learning another language facanating, frustrating but oh so rewarding when you get it right...I'm going to try Zeplins Good times bad times, like I said "try" being the operative word here. ..and bucket loads of patience. .. And the dude who I'm going to try does the tutorial in Spanish but if you understand tabs the language is not an obstacle, amazing. .. Tabs love 'em. .. Thank you.
Thanks for the lesson my guy
Thank you for sharing.
