I know this sounds "umm actually" but the reasons they only live 200 years is because Tritons arent an elven race, at all, they come from the elemental plane of water, were created by a different god and dont even have pointy ears. That whole thing about them not letting their foe get away is about how they chased the elementals that were now invading the material plane into the material plane so that the elementals wouldnt wreak havoc. Triton arent sea elves, sea elves are sea elves

@khandwa style Not at all, in fact entire tribes of them serve the ruling genie noble of the City of Ten Thousand Pearls, and they serve as bodyguards for good genies all over. So a water genasi is basically the ignored kid of an ally. They don't have any issues listed with any type of genasi, though I'd personally rule them as slightly biased against fire or earth ones on principle.

I think a good way to avoid the pompous self righteousness could be to change how they react to no one knowing them. Instead of indignation have them be genuinely confused, maybe even a bit frightened by the idea that the rest of the world has completely forgotten them. Heck this could be a great backstory for a Triton Bard. The Triton Kingdom is being menaced by something they can't handle on their own, so they send a messenger to call on the aid of their ancient allies. The messenger arrives at the mainland only to discover that the world has long since forgotten them, and can convince no one of his identity or plight. So he takes up Bardic Magic to spread the tales and glories of his people, both to spread appreciation for his people and to sell the enormity of the crisis that threatens the world.

Or play to that sense of pride and nobility, and have your Triton be genuinely remorseful of having even potentially harmed people by accidentally causing an extradimensional invasion. Maybe even make them self-sacrificial to a fault and have them try to help literally anyone, with no regard to their own safety or even morality, due to a feeling of guilt so deep it is nearly killing them on the inside. Then the obvious story arc would be to help them realize that not literally everything bad that ever happened to others is their fault. Insanely self-centered and prideful as per the lore, but this arrogance resulting in a martyr complex rather than being an asshole

I like to picture Tritons as cheesy superhero types that get really confused when nobody knows about that megalodon they wrestled into submission 100 years ago. They proudly announce their mighty deeds... only to be at a loss when everyone seems much more concerned about things happening in a places they can actually, you know, exist in without being a fish man. Making them pompous nobles with an intense sense of obligation is fine, but giving them some himbo energy really elevates them as a whole, in my opinion. Big "I love you too, random citizen!" energy.

He's mistaking a comment on page 115 of Volo's guide saying they are as ARROGANT as elves to mean they ARE elves. But it was just a random sea captain saying that they're arrogant but too isolated to be proven wrong. There is no actual relation to elves at all, they were formed from water in the elemental plane of water. The closest 'relation' they consider having is nerieds, which are sea fey. Even in action, the arrogance is the only real similarity they have, triton culture and attitude is very different.

Our characters were summoned by our dieties and patrons to collect a couple McGuffins to defeat the BBEG. My character was so committed to the objective that he was willing to ignore a village that was set ablaze by the BBEG. We had to collect the items before the BBEG ascended or something like that. I love you and my life is your shield." way possible, hahaha. Only to then have the party deal with the absolutely weird emotional repercussions of that whole thing where a complete stranger who refused to even learn your names sacrificed himself at the first sign of trouble with the most emotional, world-weary goodbye possible.

I made my triton a barbarian of brains, brawn, and beauty (I rolled stupidly high and got a 16,17, and 18) and she is curious about the world...because she wants to take it over. She doesn't like all the wars that keep happening so she wants to take care of the matters herself, whether it be brute force, taking their place, making them sign a treaty, or ensnaring them in her beauty to do as she wants, she will do anything to end the wars across the regions. I still don't know how that aligns...chaotic good? Lawful evil? No clue haha

Currently playing a triton tempest cleric in my friends' (heavily modified) Hoard of the Dragon Queen module and I'm having a blast with him actually, hes actually one of my favorite characters in a while. Basically he was a hitman for the Luskan mafia before he was betrayed and exiled, and he later found new purpose as a cleric of Deep Sashelas, the sea god. He grew up on the surface on his own so he doesnt have the whole triton propaganda thing beaten into his head making him insufferable, but he still maintains some of those pompous/self-sacrificing things mentioned in the video. He is the party Dad Friend who's really tryin his best. Tritons can be really fun as long as you have a good group of friends and you arent deliberately an ass.

I'm playing a Triton oath of the open sea paladin and she's a herbo that's a mix of Seahawk from She-Ra and Aquaman from Batman the Brave and the Bold. Basically is excited for adventure and relishes in and wants to carve her own path.

Played a low int Triton that was basically an anxious golden retriever that got kicked out of the water plane, just wanted back to his farm life after realising the military weren't perfect selfless protectors. Just en entire himbo.

I played a triton for a few sessions. He was Lord Katakus of House Tituth, and he was accompanied by his tortle butler who's name I can't remember. Katakus was bombastic, had a bit of an ego, and had no idea how stuff worked. For an example, he saw someone get thrown out the second story window of a tavern and determined that was the proper method of exit... and followed suit a few moments later.

Played a triton samurai pufferfish for a two year long campaign (was the second character I played in this campaign, the first was a granny paladin). His name was Wasabi Naramura, a timid bounty hunter turned confused yet well meaning hero whose goal was to simply prove himself worthy to himself and his peers and follow in the footsteps of his ideal (The Pearl Dancer). I also flavoured his spells and fighting style around him being a short pufferfish man. For instance, whenever he used shield, he would puff up his cheeks. In addition, I also decided to mix influences with his look and voice with Japanese mythology style and the voice of a cockney.

Today I found out that a original character in my book, is a triton to a T. Blue skin, webbed finger and toes, can travel to any body of water on any planet. Is apart of a war. And she has a power that no other of her kind has, the power to turn into a cracken. And her people use that power in war weather she likes it or not. This just makes me feel better that I didn’t make her up, bc my book centers around mythology being altered and supernatural creatures being from other planets. So this fits well

I made a Triton character for salt marsh and made the Tritons similar to Spartans. Minus the duty to save everyone, they are similar when it comes to militant heritage, pride and even isolationism. One of my favorite characters by far to play.
