Barn find Mk2 VW Golf G60 Rallye - will it start after 20 years?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Yep, behind this garage door, is a VW Mk2 Golf G60 Rallye covered in Swallow shite. Almost a barn find, but certainly a rare survivor.
While filming our recent Oval Beetle 'Hedge Find', we stopped for a coffee break. The owner of the property, Geraint, then casually mentioned that he had another VW in the garage 'we might be interested in seeing'. Eyebrows were raised, and the record button was pressed as the garage door went up.
'My interest in VWs led to owning a string of Beetles, buses, Type 3s and even 411s. My son got interested in them because of me, and this Golf is actually his. He emigrated well over 20 years ago, but refuses to let me sell it. I start it every few years and warm it up, then wash it. The swifts come every year and nest in the garage. I used to cover it up, but kept forgetting. Do you want me to run up the Golf? It will start, I am sure…'
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
Visually the Rallye wore inflated wheel arches and wide metal side skirts, similar to other rally greats of the '80s (think Audi Quattro and Integrale Lancias). The headlights were oblong, and the three slat grille was different. It was a lot of difference for a car that didn't really sell very easily and it was alleged to have cost over double that of a Golf GTI, which wasn't exactly cheap.
5000 sold worldwide, but only about 100 coming to the UK officially, all are LHD. Basically, this was the Godfather of the R32 launched after the millennium.

I’ve worked as a main dealer tech with VW & Audi since 1997. The Rallye was rare even then, in fact I only worked on 1… it was during a time when VW & Audi were making really special things, G40 Polo’s, Audi/Porsche RS2’s, Mk3 Golf colour concept GTI’s, harlequin’s & The Corrado, the list is almost endless & I’m glad I started my career when I did… nothing is special anymore, modern cars are soulless with no character… love your videos Jonny, thank you 😊

Thats the golf magic. U let it rott for 15 years and it still starts up and is ready to drive. Same with old Civics. Magical cars!
Love it. My only comment would be to correct you on the Golf Limited (sorry!) The 16v G60 Limited was the most powerful VW made up until the R32, there were 71, and most went to vw personnel. Built on 5 door body shells they were all black I believe, ran small bumpers and had signature blue stripe on the grille (and an offset VW Motorsport emblem)

That’s awesome, looks to be in rather good nick too, interior looks almost brand new. The German temporary plates expired in 2001 (06/07/01 to be exact as the plates say), so it must’ve basically sat for 20 years. Coincidentally I think 2001 was the last time those wheels looked cool!

Epic find, Jonny. Always loved Rallye Golfs. I think the red Mk2 you showed (pictured at your show) is a regular G60. The G60 Limited was a bit of a sleeper: five-door shell, small bumpers, single headlight grille with a black VW roundel and a nice little Volkswagen Motorsport badge with matching pinstripe. I believe the earlier ones were finished in metallic graphite grey and the later ones in metallic black. I seem to recall they with came with BBS RM split-rims. Last time I saw one for sale it was going for about £60,000. A lot of money but worth it IMO.

There's an idea. The email is open if a brand is watching this.
A mk2 Rallye in nice condition is worth upwards of £30,000 now. These are a seriously collectable car. I hope it eventually ends up in the hands of someone who will look after it, restore it and cherish it. It's one of my personal dream cars to have one day.
I had a normal G60 in the mid 90's, probably the best car I've ever owned and still regret selling in favour of a VR6, but hey when your 25 you need newer hotter faster wheels all the time
I was at ( the now long gone ) McMillans VW in Bolton doing my work experience from school when the first G60,s came through and one of the sales lads took me out. I was 15 and it is ingrained as a very good day in my crazy car life. Another brilliant film Johnathan thank you for the memories pal xx
Glad to see it got a bit of love!
What a beautiful bit of bonus content, always loved these and wanted to own one,
Hace 25 años cuando tenía 19 tube uno rojo Era genial Que gran recuerdo ❤❤❤
I remember seeing these back in the early 2000’s when I started getting into cars, and I wanted one so much! Love the blown arches, and the supercharged engine. It’d be a real pocket rocket now, not quick by todays standards, but still offering that “analogue” driving experience
Wow, what a cool find. It definitely needs a new home. It was good to see it started right up. Awesome. 👍👍
Jonny, great channel and I look forward to each instalment. Just to help you with your Mk2 Golf nomenclature: “Golf G60” (LHD FWD, not officially imported to the UK, and the red car you had at your event), “Golf Rallye” (as depicted in your video, it’s not a G60 Rallye), and finally the “Golf G60 Limited” (5 door shell, synchro, all Schwartz metallic, LHD, 70 built, 16v G60 motor). I hope I recall the details after a 30 year hiatus.
I loved these back in the day ! still do actually...what a suprise ...i hope it makes it back on the road ..brilliant car

Never ceases to amaze me what is still about in peoples sheds/garages and outbuildings. What a great car to have tucked away.
That takes me back to the early days of GTi Engineering and BR Motorsport and Car & Car Conversions magazine.
When I was kid there was a garage near me and one of these used to sit outside everyday. I was once there with my dad and got to sit in the passenger seat while it moved about 10 metres, such a cool car. I've heard it's still at said garage.
Definitely my favourite Golf of all, probably because it is one of the Weirdest (a common theme with my automotive tastes) and the fact it is basically a quattro with a hatchback. They look really smart, if I ever get the money, would love to find an original UK car, preferably unmolested...

What a bonus find! I was lucky enough to get hold of the front end of one of these to make some Perspex Headlight Covers.

:o What a car! Proper Unicorn levels of car now tbh. I used to go to GTI international and loads of VAG shows back in the day and to see one then was rare. Usually, you saw other heavily modified MK2's running a Rallye bodykit with a 20v turbo lump or something. This is a special car!

Wow quite a find a G60 Mk 2 Golf Rallye pleased you washed the poop off it
That smoke out of exhaust... Its the good memories of the 90s leaving the time capsule.
Living on Sarajevo for a few years, I sometimes spent Sunday mornings between 2000 and 2002 at a huge car market. Much of the stock was "liberated" from Zurich, Munich and elsewhere. It was a sort of Brick Lane on acid. The MkII Golf had a hero status on Bosnia; they had been built for quite a few years for the domestic market at a plant just outside Sarajevo. But I digress ..... Among many funky cars of dubious origin at the car market (Autopijaca) one would see the odd Golf Country and VERY occasionally a G60 or even a Golf Rallye. It was a lucky dip for the brave back then. If you knew someone who could "help" with registration, the world was your oyster. I drove a 1986 Jetta GLi that seemed never to need an MoT (Tehnički Pregled). I just sent the papers off and they came back stamped. But I was never quite brave enough to bargain for a fancy blown Golf or a 405 T-16x4 or any of that fancy stuff. And it was all there if you were brave.

Had a Mark 2 Golf GTI in Tornado Red from new in 1986 (replaced a Polar White Astra GTE that was written off). Absolutely loved it - it just felt so solid and so much feedback driving it compared to the Astra. Sold it to my brother in law after a couple of years and got a new 205Gti. That rattled more after just 4 weeks than the Golf ever did. One car that I wished I could have kept - happy memories. Those cars were such a want back in the day but were so bloody expensive.
G60, I never got around to owning one, but I had 3 X 92 polo g40s and an 89 g40, all bought crashed, in my french department (46) at one point I owned all but 2 they ever sold there. The handling was erratic, huge lift off understeer mixed with the odd bit of snap oversteer as the chassis was too flexible. I fitted 6 point cages and strut tie bars to mine to solve the issue. Huge fun.
Wtf blowen away by this find talk about coming across a rare car by accident, love it 😍
Great BBF Jonny! I do have a set of wheel centre caps for the correct wheels ‘Sebring Design”…. Thanks for jogging the old grey matter.
Definitely a bonus! I had 2x 4WD Mk2 Syncros in the 90s, converted one with an 8v GTI engine and 1 with a 16v GTI engine... then I spent my house deposit on a Mk3 VR6 2.9 Syncro.... Now I run around in a Mk5 TDi 4Motion, so my 4th 4WD Golf... love em :)
