    Last year, we adopted a stray kitten that appeared in the brush at the end of our driveway. I think he probably grew up outside, because he _loves_ being outside all day. (We bring him inside at night.) I can attest to the fact that keeping him well fed does not reduce his motivation to hunt. He doesn’t eat many of his kills; I guess he is a sport hunter.

They run free as well and have warm, safe homes as well. I agree with you, I feed my cats twice a day as well and you will not find a mouse, a rat, bugs, snakes, etc. around our homes, sheds or garage. They are amazing little killers. I have two cats that I think are ideal for being barn cats. I found both of them 3 1/2 months ago living as stray kittens in my back yard. One was young enough to be socialized with humans, but the other one was about two months older and a bit past the stage of easy human socialization. She just started getting in my lap and letting me pet her last week. I am not sure how "feral" they can be considered at this point, but what I am sure of is that they are not made to live inside a house with a human ruler (I tried it repeatedly, and it just does not work.) and that they are great as outside cats. They also love to go after critters in the yard. After watching your videos, I have come to the conclusion that it is the cats' destiny to be barn cats.

  • @HiddenSpringFarm

    Very true. Keep at it with ur kitties as you're on the right track. If you can get them on your lap that's a great sign that they're into you but it takes a really long time before they're totally comfortable. If it's bad weather and I don't let the cats free they cry asking me to let them out to hunt. They enjoy the outdoors so much, but they are oblivious to the predators thats why I lock them up at night now. Good for you to take in these kitties.

    I'm disabled and when I'm having a bad day or night with pain or sickness my rescue cat will bring me the mice or rats he catches (outside) as a present to make me feel better. He even used to catch mice, kill them and present them to my therapy/emotional support dog in exchange for pinching her dry biscuits. I would find the dead mice neatly laid out near the food and water bowls in my kitchen. This is his story; When I first moved here I found out a cat had been left outside over winter and for more than 6 months. As a 18 month old kitten he had been abandoned by his previous owners and had been chased by some nasty neighbours. It took a week of leaving him out tuna every night and leaving him a box with a towel to sleep in, for him to trust me and about a month for him and my dog to become buddies. I call him Shadow as he really is my shadow, following me almost everywhere. Because of the nasty neighbours (they moved away) my Shadow is scared of people except me, the lady from the house up the back of my place, and my big brother James. James is a big gentle giant at 6 feet tall and loves Shadow as if Shadow is his own. My cat loves hanging around up in my neighbours yard close to her chook shed. The neighbour says he supervises her doing the gardening and yard work. He simply watches out for the chooks and has chased away other cats from trying to get into the chook yard. He also waits for his chance to catch a mouse or rat as they try to visit the chooks. It has been 4 years since Shadow became mine and I became his. I hope for many more years

    I've had a feral mother and four of her kittens in my life for almost four years now. I ran out of mice a while back. I have one female in particular that has a higher kill rate than the rest of them put together. We have a creek behind the house, so the wild life is abundant. I get a lot of lizards and frogs, but nothing compares to the baby snakes, and of all things, cicadas. I've actually learned to recognize the change in the cicadas sound as one's being captured.. And chewed. At the beginning of the summer, I took a dead baby snake away from her. She left abruptly, and returned within one minute with a fresh, live replacement.

    We've had cats in our family since I was 5 years old. I'm now 57 and I can attest to the fact that cats are way better than traps or baits any day! My parents had a music shop and we lived in the city's commercial district with bars and restaurants for neighbors. Rats were a major problem until one day a feral mother cat got into our garage and had a litter of kittens. We would adopt them after they were weaned and she would disappear until the following spring when she would return to have another litter. We lived on an eight lane highway so needless to say no all of the cats had nine lives.😭We had a better success rate with longevity when we started spaying and neutering the offspring as soon as they were old enough. After being fixed their tendency was to stay on the property and not wander, especially across that eight lane highway! It was truly amazing the rat free bubble we lived in while everyone else around us had the rodent blues!😄 And yes I also prescribe to supplementing your cat's diet with feedings. Give them enough to keep them around but not so much they become fat and lazy.

    We just recently moved to a rural area with an awful mouse population issue. Every home in the area has at least 1-2 mousing cats, hell one of the neighbors put up an official “cat crossing” sign on the street 🤣 When we moved in, my cat who I have had for 5 years had never encountered mice before. She’s indoor only for her safety. Mice began sneaking into the house and a few months ago she started catching them almost daily for a while. She has become so much more affectionate and energetic as well as social with us. It’s wild how innate that mousing instinct is and how it really helps make a cat feel confident and get their mojo. It’s just a little odd waking up to a paralyzed half dead mouse in the living room 🤣

    We don't have a farm (yet), but we live on the edge of a forest and about a 5 minute walk from a nature preserve, so we get mice and other animals. I don't like using poison cause if you don't get the dead rodents, some other animal can come along a take it and eat it... I like to keep up with Southwest eagles live came and I can't remember what year, but was within the past few... They had a baby that died from poisoning from I believe a squirrel that mom or dad had brought back for dinner. Must have found it dead and ceased the opportunity for a fast meal. The adults were fine cause they were big enough for the trace amounts not to have much effect on them, but the baby died 😭😭😭 and if you have a farm or in the suburbs like us, there are cats and other animals and kids around... Just don't want it to effect any of them. Our dogs have found dead mice and even a rabbit in our yard/garden. We have coyote, racoons, cats, hawks, and a pair of owls in the area and they like to leave stuff behind 🤣 I don't want my dog stumbling on a dead mouse that ate poison!

    that's sad about the eagle eh, that's the exact point what kind of potential domino effect the poison can have. I have a ton more fun with the Claw Crew anyway lol. You know ur stuff and care about nature i can see that. Nice.

    You can get breeds that are even more effective than normal house cats. The Bengal, Abyssinian, and chausie are really good at hunting and can control rat populations while a lot of domestic cats do not take rats. Bengal cats will even take small mink, weasel, small hawks owls.

    Raccoons and foxes are usually good. They will team up with cats and look for danger. A hawk will die if it attacks an adult cat. The bacteria in a cat's mouth can kill an animal. Cats' salvia is lethal. They are not built as a prey animal. They fall prey to coyotes mostly who learn to kill them with a head bite thus avoiding being bitten or clawed most of the time.

    We had a bit of a mouse problem on this block. Then next door got a rescue cat which was friendly and would spend time in neighbour's gardens. Then their children wanted a cat so they got a cat. Then we got a cat because my son wanted one after seeing next door's cat. Then we started seeing a lot of new cats in our neighbourhood because other people started getting cats. Don't ask me why. Now we don't see any rats or mice running around our neighbourhood or our kitchens. They just seem to have disappeared all of a sudden.

    Looking to get a couple of Barn cats. Do you vaccinate your barn cats? Another question- if I have them in a garage/barn would you leave the garage door cracked open throughout the night? Kinda afraid of other animals getting in and attacking them. What do you think? Thanks

  • @HiddenSpringFarm

    @HiddenSpringFarm

    Good questions. Yes all our cats are fully vaccinated and we treat them with Revolution which is a topical ointment to prevent fleas, ticks and ear mites. I used to free roam our cats, but since losing a few to predators I built them a Catio and my workshop is now the cat house lol. If they can get out thru an opening then yes they will go and hunt. As long as they're trained to the garage they will come back, but if you're worried about predators as I am keep them locked at night. If you need to know how to barn train your cats I have a video on that as well.
