Barm Brack (Barmbrack) - Irish Tea Loaf

Barm Brack, traditionally eaten at Halloween is a lovely fruity loaf cake. I find it ideal at any time, with tea and sometimes with butter spread on it. As the spices and fruit can be changed to suit what may be in the cupboard this is great for these trying times.

    I made another Barm Brack, as an offering to the Irish side of the family. My husband’s youngest nephew died tragically, and sudden. I thought the loaf would be of some comfort to my sister-in-law. Your’s is the best recipe- the only one I bake. All the best, heather

    Made it! Had a bag of dried mixed berries and cherries in the cupboard, threw in a handful of raisins, soaked it in tea and added a slosh of Crown Royal Apple Whisky. It is my husband's new favourite. Thank you Geoff!

    Hi Geoff, this cake is amazing, I’ve made several and they are delicious. I have dropped a couple to my Mum and Dad over the last few weeks and they absolutely thoroughly enjoyed them. Will look forward to making some again when flour is more readily available. I’ve watched you bake for a very long time and I enjoy baking along with you, thank you for all you do. I baked it and it really is good. Thanks as always for translating measurements for us non-metric folks! I added a bit of whole wheat flour, 1/4 tsp salt, and chopped walnuts. It's amazing how rich it tastes considering it has no fat in it.

    I will try this. I never heard of Barmbrack before. I like the way this man scrapes out the bowl, it is annoying to watch cooks who just leave a lot of the food around the sides of the bowl. I worry about not knowing exactly how much of the liquid to use, I am not the world’s greatest cook. haha. But I will give it a go.💁‍♀️

    HI Sonia. I hope you enjoy it when you try it. Don't worry too much about how much liquid you use. The more liquid you use the longer the load will need to be baked for. But you can test with a skewer poked into the centre to see when it is done. I do tend to scrape my bowls rather more than a lot of people, since I think all the ingredients need to be. used.

    HI Elissar Linder. You ask a very interesting question. I have 4 2lb loaf tins and each has different dimensions. It seems that manufacturers can't settle on a definitive answer. However the tin that I used for Barm Brack was 9.5 inches by 5.25 inches and 4 inches deep. That would be about 24cm by 13.5 cm and about 10 cm deep. But any pan of similar dimensions would work for this particular recipe. I hope you enjoy the Barm Brack.

    Hi Geoff can you give me any tips on how to make a fruit farmhouse cake without it always crumbling, even after leaving it a couple of days it still falls to bits when slicing, always tastes good tho, thanks Josie

  • @geoffsbakingblog

    @geoffsbakingblog

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Josie G. It is difficult to give advice without knowing the recipe. But I should say that Farmhouse cake of Manor cake as it is sometime know is supposed to be quite crumbly. However it should be able to be sliced reasonable well. Baking at the right temperature is important, as if the temperature is too high the cake will become drier that it should already be. Home ovens are notorious for being variable as far as temperatures are concerned so I always have an oven thermometer in my oven so that I can check that the temperature is correct. The amount of liquid in the cake is also important. So, for instance, some people like to reduce the amount of sugar in a cake but sugar is a liquid so reducing it takes moisture out of the cake and it should be replaced with a little other liquid. I made a Farmhouse sultana cake in 2014, which is on my blog, but I don't have a video for that. From memory it sliced well even though it was crumbly: geoffsbakingblog.com/2014/10/farmhouse-sultana-cake/ .

    Hi Geoff.... This is soooooooo good and really easy for anyone to follow.. People are baking who have. never baked before.. So I think it's a really good one to do for beginners I would think it's fool proof so Weldone for giving us this. • @geoffsbakingblog

    @geoffsbakingblog

    Hi Henrietta. Yes this is an easy recipe, so those who don't usually bake should not have a problem. I think adding whiskey in the the soaking liquid will give a different flavour. If you like that flavour then go ahead and use some. I personally don't like that flavour so I didn't use whiskey.

    Hi Geoff. I've got what I need to make this tomorrow but today I was going to soak the fruit. I have tea on hand ready for the soak but after watching this again and seeing the color of the batter it made me think of perhaps soaking the fruit in coffee. Would this be an acceptable substitute if one were of such a persuasion?

  • @geoffsbakingblog

    @geoffsbakingblog

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Victor. You could try it, but I couldn't comment on how that might taste as I don't drink, or like, coffee. I do wonder whether coffee might impart too strong a flavour into the fruit, and then the cake as the excess liquid is added. But if a person likes that flavour it may be ok.

    Hi Dahurica. I am glad you enjoy the videos. There isn't much difference between Barm Brack and Bara Brith really. The first is Irish and the second is Welsh, two variants on the same theme really. In mine there is slightly more spice in one than the other. There is an English version too, called Tea Bread or Tea Loaf. All of them taste very good indeed.

    HI Solo Man. I won't be getting them fixed any time soon, even if I wanted to. No-one is working at the moment. I hope you keep yourself safe too.

    Bara Brith is a Welsh Tea Loaf. I also have a recipe for that. There are many variations of tea loaf. Barm Brack(Barmbrack) often has Irish Whiskey in it though I mention that I don't put that in. Bara Brith doesn't.
