Just a comment on straight lines, it is always good practice to first move the eye from point 1 to point 2 then focus on point 2 while drawing the line rather than following the line with your eye while drawing. A bit of practice in this way and straight lines become easy.

Fascinating... I independently developed a very similar method trying to copy from a book on drawing Disney Princesses. Might want to mention in the drawing course the plates are arranged in sequence from simple to complex and should be completed in the order presented.

@5:00 I'm already amazed at the straight lines. Mine aren't that straight with a ruler.

Drawing a straight line is an important part of atelier training that is developed with constant practice. If you maintain a discipline of drawing them yours will be just as straight in no time!

Use the shoulder and lock the arm, also, using the pencil or in this case the charcoal as a guide, pay attention how she does it.

one way: find your very best oil painters alive on in history. if there are records, see what they used in their art training. then follow suit. many artists (even modern ones like Picasso and Van Gogh) studied Bargue. if you draw very well, your paintings will become 10x better. reason I paused oil painting (my forte) is because had to accept my drawing skills were lacking. i want to get that spot on before returning to oil painting.

The original plates were quite large, so I recommend printing them on the largest size you have available to you.

You can print it at any size, as I have seen ateliers print it up to 18"x24" or as small as a regular piece of computer paper. I encourage students to go to at least 11"x14" because the original plates were printed at a larger size.

the first step any artist has to achieve is doing straight lines without rulers or stuff like that

  • @adrianpedraza8612

wrong the first thing an artist has to do is develop observational skills. If you get yourself too caught up in making silly straight lines you will lose sight of the big picture. Having control over lines is a must have but for this particular exercise, people shouldn't be so worried about making straights is just counterproductive. I recommend doing it with a straight edge while practicing making straights on a separate sheet of paper, once you feel you have the hang of it try it without it :D

I never understand the use of sticks or plumb line to trace the outlines. If the goal is to training the eye to proportions and shades, doesnt make sense using side supports, but only your observation and tryouts. Otherwise, just put the paper over bargue's draw and copy it.
