Handy tip, keep the leftover charcoal powder in a jar & apply with a soft brush in your drawings.
Wearing white shirt while sharpening charcoal is brave.
Thank you so much for these video demonstrations!

Thank you..
Thank you
I wondered where this video was when you mentioned it last time.
What kind of sand paper (fine, extra fine, or rough) did you use?
I never heard about this way to sharpen charcoal, thanks for the info. Was it standard procedure to always use charcoal like this for artist's in the late 19th century? Did Sargent and Degas for example always draw with charcoal sharpened like this only?

A sharp point is necessary to turn form tightly. I am not intimately familiar with exactly how each artist sharpened their charcoal, only that any tight work they have done would have required a sharp point to execute. It is likely that many artists did not bother to sharpen their charcoal for more loose work.

The Da Vinci Initiative OK, thanks for the info. I never learned how to sharpen charcoal like this. I have to try that now. Thanks.
Thanks for the video, very helpful although using the charcoal with a point like this currently alludes me. I am unsure how to hold it properly to make accurate marks, the angle i hold the charcoal to make a legible mark seems to make the point snap. I am using Nitram B and HB charcoal. Any tips?

With experience your touch will become lighter. I know that it is frustrating to snap points, but your hand will develop a sensitivity over time that will stop this from happening.
Please. what size of Coates do you prefer more, 4-6mm or 7-9mm ? I 'm ready to add willow to my charcoal sketches, after creating as many as I could, with compressed sticks and pencils. Should I get 4-6mm, both or a different set please?
Can you please tell us what hardness of charcoal you are using, and if you are changing why and when? thank you

I use a variety of hardnesses depending on the area of a drawing I am working on. I find for going dark I prefer softer charcoal, and when I am working on the brightest area of the lights I prefer a harder charcoal.
