BARBEL FISHING ON SMALL RIVERS

Спорт

In this episode we detail my approach to Barbel Fishing on Small Rivers. Its 16th June 2020 and you join me on the banks of the River Lea moving around trying to catch one of the most popular coarse fish, the Barbel. We catch Chub along the way but our main focus is to catch a Barbel and we catch a few. The video covers tackle, techniques, tactics, rigs and bait application which need to be adapted to help you catch more Barbel from small rivers.
A few of my favourite Barbel products, some of which are used in the video:-

Nice video Nick. Regarding the rod tips down it is something I have done for many years with my barbel whenever flow rate and swims allow,I am no fan to say the least of having rod tips up in the air on small waterways as the line breaks too suddenly and acutely from the rig upwards.I also generally prefer to use a lightly trapped captive back lead about a half a metre to a metre above my lead, held in place by soft grip stops, this helps to keep the localised region where the fish move in to feed nice and clear of any suspicious line that might be breaking off the bottom too soon and spooking the feeding zone.

I live in the Midlands and the barbell fishing up here, at least on the Severn, Trent and Avon is mostly about using a combination of weight and finesse in strong, heavy flow. I was shown a great technique for smaller, shallower swims. Fish your line and bait free and light; a light link of swann shot dropped off your mainline, to get the line down. Then let the line run free through your fingers with whatever current there is and feel for the bites with your finger tips. Give it a go. i think you'll like it. When it comes off there is no better way

Lovely video mate. Not sure I get your thinking about getting the rod low. The lower it is, the more line there is in the swim and more likely to get liners unless using back leads. With the rods high, the line is up and out with the least amount of line in the swim. Seems to work for you but might be worth a think mate.

I’m simply matching my tackle to the environment in which I’m fishing. Nothing to do with the size of the fish really. And club rules state barbless hooks.
